I have yet to get a clog in the filament sensor but I do seriously think they need to redesign the upper filament path of that extruder housing. Most my clogs in it are under the runout sensor just above the hobbed gears inside that larger gap. Every time I have a clog I have to push the filament down out of that opening and snip that tip off. That opening there is pretty huge. Most extruders have it as a small diameter opening just like the lower half under the hobbed gears. I think that larger opening on the upper half of this extruder housing doesn't help keep the shape of the filament. The filament tends to curl or even swell ever so slightly as it goes into that gap right after the hobbed gears release it to where it wont pass through the filament sensor. This could be for a few reasons. Either I am getting a little bit of heat creep making my filament pliable, or the extruder tension is too strong deforming the filament ever so slightly. It could be both even. There is not much play you can give on the extruder tension as cover prevents you from backing the screw out much at all. The stock position from the factory has it screwed all the way it. I backed mine out as much as I can but the spring used is really strong as well so it does not relieve much pressure. As for heat creep, I would normally do a PID tuning but I have no clue how to do that with the BambBu printers. From what I gather it is not an accessible feature and done internally. I know mine needs PID Tuning because I use the Panda Revo hotend on mine. I guarantee the tuning is off a little do to this. One day I hope to figure that part out. I think it would help me a lot. Until then I just have to live with it. It is not too bad though as I do not get clogs all the time. It is only ever once and a while.
I have had my printer for a grand total of 2 weeks and I already got a clog on the extruder. This is the only video so far that I have seen that is a tear down so thank you! Now I just need to figure out how to take off the cog as the filament froze the whole bit
Thanks for watching, sorry to hear that, i was going to take apart the extruder but i was short of time when i made the video. One of the things you need is a small box with the holes to hold in place the extruder parts. Typically its something you can print, if your extruder is not clogged. If you have another printer you can print it. Not sure if you can do it without the box. Very weird that its locked up the extruder unit itself. It could be faulty unit, if you don't fancy trying to take it apart, I would contact BL support and see if they will give you a replacement under warranty. Alternately, purchase a replacement part, print the tool and then dismantle the broken one. What a pain… BTW have you seen Bambu Lab's own video of the extruder dismantling? I might record one, but not really necessary if this one covers it th-cam.com/video/CLlT1RV-oJE/w-d-xo.html
This is NOT the "Ultimate Guide". He stops short of taking apart the drive gears. If you get heat creep like I have gotten a few times you might have to learn this and it is covered in other TH-cams.
Yes, i don’t split down the gears here, maybe in another video. Would be interested to know what is causing your heat creep, i have never had this, mine is stock. Looking at adding an E3D to test, and it was a concern this might lead to issues.

Brilliant! My X-1 has just refused to print. After removing the filament a green dot still showed on the control screen which I gather means there is still filament detected in the extruder. There is no other video that makes the process for unclogging the extruder look so easy. Thanks a million for making this video.
I got a blockage in my X1 Carbon and at first thought it was a nozzle blockage and so I removed the nozzle but it turned out to be a very small piece of filament that had broken off inside the Bowden tube, I tried to replace the nozzle but it wont push back up into the extruder, I haven't removed the extruder yet, what could stop the nozzle from pushing up into the extruder besides filament? I used an Allen key to feel around in the nozzle aperture and there doesn't seem to be anything protruding into the aperture.
@AndrewAHayes sorry for the late response, I assume you have found a solution, but in any case, if I understand you correctly you removed the nozzle but left the extruder in the print head? Nothing should block the nozzle going back in, but you should remove the extruder, it pretty easy to remove and put back in.
@@T8Maker Yes it was also a piece of broken filament in the extruder, my fault as I put an old roll in the AMS with only about 10m left, I have loads of these roll ends but in future I will just use them on my Ender 5 Plus machines as broken filament is much easier to remove than the Bambu is.
I really like to take the dive into one of these new generation printers but I don't think the community is big enough yet. Think I will wait until lidar is more fully adopted.
I have a Prusa MK3s+ also, and except for the speed I tend to prefer it because firstly, I built it. Secondly, I can easily customize it if I want to, and lastly, parts and info is readily available from many sources, including Prusa support, which is the best support by far of any printer vendor. And if I need something to be perfect, it's also rock solid reliable, but Sloooow. The Bambu Lab CX1, is cool tech, very quick, has some small issues from time to time, but generally works great. But if anything happens to it, it's a closed eco-system, parts have to be got from Bambu Lab, which can be out of stock, and you're reliant on their very slow support, their Wiki, and TH-cam to find a fix. Re the Lidar, I am not sure how much value it adds. I have printed quite a lot on the textured PEI sheet without issues and the Lidar doesn't work with that sheet because of the texture, so...is it really needed? That worked! I had my first clog in my X1C (filament wouldn’t retract, was showing an error). Your video saved the day. Not easy for my big fingers to plug in all those tiny cables but I made it work! Thank you sir.
@teabagNBG, is it definitely the head? Could it be the AMS filament buffer at the back of the printer or the AMS itself. In the head, check the extruder cog to ensure its not damaged or worn. In the AMS Hub there are springs inside that can click. In the AMS the first stage feeder does the extrusion, and again it can slip and click on the extruder cog. Does the filament slip or is it feeding/retracting smoothly?
@teabagNBG Let me know how you get on, I would be curious to know why it only clicks in one direction. If it is the cogs, likely due to pushing rather than pulling.

Thanks for this video. Very clean shots and well explained. I was able to find a piece of of TPU filament stuck in my extruder gears. (Not sure if that’s exactly what it would be called) was able to get it out and all is well now :)

@tama0722 I haven't seen any issues in several months, you do need to keep it clean. That said, as with any moving part, it isa consumable part and will eventually need replacing. Bambu Lab does have it in stock if you do need to replace the rods.
yes very comforting to know what happens when i pull that screw off ...which i would do anyway, but to know which access which part. months of printing, crappy glow in the dark filament finally bunged her up completely! thanx muchly!
@kmcgraw65 Hi, the gears are quite small, so a gentle wiggle of the extruder as you put it back in will help line up the cogs, but most of the time it will go straight in without issues. Just don't force it.

Good vid. I had to do this cause the printer thinks it has a clogged nozzle, which it does, but it keeps getting stuck on it. The error message that is.
@Pablo668 What filament are you using? I have had issues with silk PLA from certain brands clogging in both my printers. My guess is temps are wrong, but cant test it because it keeps clogging.
@@T8Maker I was using the Carbon Fibre PLA filament that came with the printer. I've printed a few things using that filament since then, it's been ok. The only way I could find out of the error messages was to restart the printer, several times.
@Pablo668 I assume the error was some feeding or retraction error? Maybe there was already some clog in the print head, residue from other filaments, that cleared out after using the filament for a bit, its pretty abrasive. If you were still having the issue and if you had a spare head I would recommend swapping it out to see if you got the same issue. But in general, the CF filament are recommended with a 0.6mm nozzle rather then the 0.4 due to the fibers. That said I have printed with all of BL CF filaments and never had a clogging issue, I have also use several other brands and they all print fine with 0.4mm. Hopefully the issue is solved for you.

@edgley As for the EU store there is no extra charges for EU countries, the Sales tax is already added in checkout, but the price may differ in checkout depending on your local countries sales tax as the price on the site beside the items I think is with German sales tax which is lower then some other countries. Not sure about the UK store.

Take off the screw on the side. The spring and thread falls out. Grab the yellow gear and pull up. That's it.

my printhead started making clicking noises when unloading filament... but loading is normal... what could this be??

Any little tricks to get the bigger yellow gear to mesh back up with the drive gear when your replacing the extruder back in the machine ?

@@T8Maker Yeah I’ve used BL CF since with a 0.4 nozzle and it has been fine. Not really sure why it clogged so badly. It was brand new.
