On a video, I heard you say relax. It sounds silly, but I was never relaxed. It's like a boxer who tenses his arms to throw a punch. You lose a vast about of speed. You also become tired, faster. I'm not a great guitarist and probably never will be but your tip to relax has been one of the greatest tips I've ever had. I'll also start incorporating these exercises and we'll see what happens. Thanks!

I’ve noticed an important difference between economy and alternative picking.
Altenate picking is all about the continuous motion of whatever joint(s) is in use. The main challenge is accurately changing the down/up slant of the pick, to enable outside and inside picking. But the important point is that it is a fluid down/up with, in most cases, the wrist.
Economy picking, and I think this is very important, is NOT a continuous motion. It’s a start/stop motion. An example, 3 notes per string ascending.
    - down (movement)
    - up (movement)
    - down (movement and stop)
    - down (no movement)
    - up (movement)
    etc.
Since you can’t start/stop the entire wrist like that, there is simply too much momentum, I’ve noticed most, if not all, economy pickers are using finger motion (circular picking) instead of the wrist.
It’s very obvious in Rick’s playing. Slow examples seem to use the wrist more, but as soon as he speeds up, it’s entirely the fingers moving the pick.
It seems to me this aspect, the importance of finger movement in economy picking, is completely overlooked in instructional videos. I doubt those using the techniques are even aware that it’s not just their particular approach, but possibly a requirement for mastering economy picking at all.

Thank you. I wish Rick had noticed my comment, I would like to know what he thinks. Personally I’ve given up on economy picking for now, if I’m right it’s not just about mastering the sweeping motion, but an entirely different way of moving the pick through the strings.

Thanks for all your awesome videos Rick. Really appreciate your content! Forgive my ignorance with this next part...could you possibly create a short video simply showing different angles of your pick grip? I know it’s a silly request, but I can’t seem to find any videos of shredders simply explaining their grip on the pick. Does the pick come out perpendicular to your thumb? Slight angle pointing towards the nail? Slight angle pointing towards the wrist? How much of the pick is showing? etc...I feel like that would be super helpful and inspirational to lots of hopeful shredders out there. Keep up the great work!

    Hi Rick,
I watch your channel since some years. I think I started in 2016 (or 15?). Watched also your body transformation video.
This is a very essential excercise I was looking for a long time! Thank you for sharing your precious knowledge! I am actually an educated classical pianist who always liked to play guitar besides, but I could not find the time to build up my skills as a guitar player. I am very close in playing "Cliffs of dover in full speed" but still have some difficulties. Besides, that I also played "Eruption" quite well. I still suck in improvisation! That is my state of guitar skills. I developed a greater desire in the last years to become able to play well guitar in a band. Still don´t know which style. Blues might be essential. I allways thought of taking a lesson with you, just to get the best direction. Basically I want to teach myself, but I want to take from time to time a lesson, to get a more effective result.
I am working as a sound engineer in theatre and musical, but I make a training for IT right now.
Hope to take a lesson with you one day!
    Regards
    Malte (from Vienna)

This is awesome Rick! Love it. What tips do you have if you do these exercises but double pick the each note while crossings strings? I find this extremely easy to mess up. At slow speeds it’s easy but not very “interesting”, however, at higher speeds it becomes super easy to tumble all over, having notes ring out when they shouldn’t or miss a couple of notes. Any tips to tidy this up or clean it up will be very appreciated!

That's if you want to pick every note. I one pick roll fingers. Fingers stay close. Finger strength is important, what I do with 1,2 and 3, I do the same with 2,3 and 4. Also a finger spread exercise to stretch the muscles in the web of the hand. I practice with .10 play with .09, lightning.

That’s a great advice to train speed with just two strings and then move up to the full scale. Whenever I try to speed up, the first two strings go smooth as Legolas surfing on a giant elefant, but when doing the rest of the scale it all goes Uruk Hai on steroids. 😬
