I've watched this video like 100 times trying to learn this clean and slow and it blows my mind how clean and fast and dynamic you play it Rick. Also I have this in 0.25x speed to hear everything super detailed and I heard him say "extreeeeeeeeeeeemmeeeeeely" LOL
Rick, you are one of my favorite players/teachers on this planet. As well as one of my favorite composers for solo guitar. I’ve learned so much and thank you for consistently releasing content.
gesouix/ why people always try to be funny with this used by everyone 'paid actor' joke...not very original, dont you got some imagination from yourself?
I always like Ricks videos before I even start watching because you know damn well that Rick always puts the best stuff and I advise all of the viewers to do the same
With no intention of starting a lengthy and senseless argument over names used for various picking techniques I think your picking technique is a variation of economy picking called 'Directional picking'. That is if I understand correctly how you apply inside picking when switching strings. The number one "rule" of 'Directional picking' is when moving between strings, upon reaching the next string, the note is picked in whichever direction the pick is moving.
No doubt. Look how much he intentionally rolls his hand when playing the inside picking licks slowly. That is exactly what Troy Grady says to do to master 2 way pick slanting. I tried to watch slowly and he rolls the pick with his thumb up to speed instead of moving his hand. Paul Gilbert does the same thing.
Have you tried blue chip or red bear picks? And do you gig with the fractal and do you find that playing through tube gear changes anything in your feel and dynamic. I always am curious if most players are using the fractal for gigs or just for online?
I never quite understood why the name "economy" picking until recently when I really spent time practicing (after ten years lol) like money, make the most while spending the least. Get the most out of the least amount of movement, I guess.
I, also, naturally developed into an economy picker as well as inside picking (which to me is also economy picking). Before youtube I thought this was all alternate picking.
All nice but... Wouldn't it be better without delay and distortion? It's not your case, but with such a loaded sound the right hand is almost useless if you have a good legato technique, while with clean sound there's no hiding and is all more useful from a learning perspective, at least for me. Nice of you to share anyway, thanks.
Never in a million years. I admire anyone who can do this stuff, but I've discovered that I'm never gonna get to this level. Too old. If you are still young, - practice practice practice. And exercise your musical brain as well as your hands.
I have no idea how I’m picking when I’m playing. Never have paid attention to it. I know I change it up at times but my concentration is always on the other hand. Am I the only one out there with this bad habit?
For the life of me I cannot understand nor fathom how it would be more natural for someone to Economy pick& inside-pick when needing to cross over to the next string . It feels so uncomfortable for me & I can only alternate pick . It's weird because some of my friends can't get their heads around alternate picking either... Their brain can't compute how to cross over the string and play an upstroke... Is it a case of one over the other or can both be learnt successfully ?? I grew up watching Paul Gilbert and JP... I've always wanted to learn economy picking but not only does the 'mini sweep' catch me out every time, but also my entire vocabulary of licks and phrases would no longer work as they are all based off of alternate picking lines... ie an Yngeie fast picking pattern combines odd and even number of notes on each string yet an alternate picking pattern will often be strict groups of 4s, 6s or doubled-up triplets... hence a bit stiffer and robotic. Any help or ideas ??
You're not alone dude. For Rick, playing straight alternate would feel unnatural. I always watched JP and PG when I was learning and alternate pick everything as well, and for me outside picking to cross strings is much, much more fluid than inside picking. For me, there's no reason to choose one over the other, if you've grown comfortable alternate picking, just lean into that. It's not like you can't obtain ridiculous speeds with pure alternate picking.
0:02 When you're so fast that you soul can't keep up with your body for a sec
Haha this win

Who do you like on the OTHER planets?
I hope so ❤
Rick's lessons are gold... The best one is about string displacement... Transformed my playing... The light touch is where the speed comes from.
Master! The best of the best! Absolutely the almighty, Rick fuckin' Graham.
There's no need to have sucess to be the best.
2:51 holy shit you're human
I am indeed!
The excess note was a paid actor!
gesouix/ why people always try to be funny with this used by everyone 'paid actor' joke...not very original, dont you got some imagination from yourself?
@@FlyingV344 no i don't. Sorry to disappoint you.
gesouix /sarcastic? well, the question was ment ironic, of course you cant, otherwise you didnt need to copy, have a nice day☼

I'm gonna use this for Ola Englund's challenge.
Rick face melting me again.
nice video and great to see you using an ibanez again...
I like the ticka ticka of the pick like Gary Moore etc, great playing Rick
Yes!
Oh hell yeah!
2:51 is the only part i can do in this video 🤣
Wife - "what's that sound?"
Me - " Rick's picking hand"
Wife - "Jesus!"
Me - "yes....."
Mike Dixon I appreciate that you don’t need to specify WHO “Rick” is. You just say “Rick” and she knows. True wife of a musician! Haha
I was doing extremely well, until you made me realize that I suck at guitar. 😂
Killer Lesson! You have been really delivering with amazing content lately!!! I can see you're doing extremely well! lol
You are insanely smooth and fast... damn Rick.... 😮
0:02 even 60fps couldn’t keep up
My “go to“ doctor picking techniques .
What pick does he use? Love his clarity and tone
Bro's camera couldn't keep up with the absolute sonic destruction that just came from his hands
I enjoyed this video “extreeeeemely” well! Your picking technique is so incredible- sheer badassery, cheers!

Masterful as always!
That's greeeaat Rick ! Keep it up !
Love the daily video thing !
Awesome!!! always extremely well ...
Rick, please do a video on how to make economy picking sound less smooth and more aggressive?
Yes Rick!
Rick, your chops are absolutely amazing. The closest I've ever seen to Jason Becker. I don't take that compliment lightly either

7:45 how about up down up down up hybrid to turn that into a swybrid pattern?
Muito bom seus vídeos! Curtimos muito aqui no Brasil! parabéns

A true master 🙌
HOLY SHIT!
glad it works for you.
Rubber fingers is back, superb
hello sir..what gauge of strings are you using for your strat?
1:55
Thanks
What pick do you use? I'm looking at different picks, now i have just boyght some chicken picks and I wanted to know what are you using. Thanks
Chicken picks😂
What amp do you use to achieve that tone? It’s incredible and I’ve been saving up a lot of money for a really good rig for a while
Great playing, Rick. What guitar is that?
RICKKK DO YOU EVER GO TO NAMM??? Please go to 2020 namm your my favourite guitarist
I, also, naturally developed into an economy picker as well as inside picking (which to me is also economy picking). Before youtube I thought this was all alternate picking.
Great lesson master Rick! Which pick do you use? Dunlop jazz III?
Here I'm using one of the old Andy James signature picks by Dunlop.
Don't forget to do an upward pickslant to negotiate the inside picking string change.
That would only apply if you are moving to a lower (in pitch) string.
Hello. Great video.
What type of pick are you using while doing this?
For anyone wanting to have fast alternate picking just check out Takayoshi Ohmura and the way he picks.
The master is MAB.
The DMaj9 to F# got me in my sweet buns
Standard tuning forever
What type of saddles do u have in your guitar? 🤔
Great job rick's..
It's very hard for me to play fast.
If it was easy everyone could do it. If you can do it at all, even a little bit, you''re better than most.
@2:51 OMG! OMG! I SAW IT! RICK MADE A MISTAKE! I KNEW HE WAS HUMAN !!
Even his mistakes are musical.
EXCELLENT
The MF’in BOSS!
So much content
When you say hybrid picking most people will think about using a pick and fingertips together.
I'm doing ok, thank you.

i big fan rick, my name is franky i from wales
In the early days of lead virtuoso guitar the picking doctor was Paul Gilbert....in the last decade and a half at least ..its Rick Graham...
I've always been more comfortable with inside picking for some reason.
Show us some 240 beat down picking.
🔥🤟🤟
Hola
Like the drill picking trick of Paul Gilbert without the drill
Key of d#? First, i need to become friend with that.
What does it mean 'I know. I'm.' ? It's kind of answer, isn't it ?
I have no idea how I’m picking when I’m playing. Never have paid attention to it. I know I change it up at times but my concentration is always on the other hand. Am I the only one out there with this bad habit?
🤙😎🤘🤘🤘
almost...
Very economic movement of pick and fingers ... compared to him my pick-moves are around one meter
on the outside vs inside picking, it's most probably not the main thing... th-cam.com/video/RPVpw2seK9E/w-d-xo.html
\m/. 😎
My right hand 🤚 picking SUCKS ! I just wish I could do what you do !?? 😨😰😰🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Practice as much as he did and you'll get there someday :)
When you play so fast, the camera pixelates.... ffs...
:|@intro
An Yngwie fan disliked ....
Why? Isn't this Yngwie kinda stuff?
You do realise that basically YJM picks like that too......
Yngwie’s all about economy picking.
@@alienrefugee51 Idk I don't listen to his stuff.
If I want Bach I'll go elsewhere.
Yngwie actually is all manouche picking wich is economy from "E" to "e" and alternate from "e" to "E" he said Django was his hero growing up.
WTF? A Reptilian?
