I dont even answer my phone anymore, i let it go straight to voicemail. Thats how many scam phone calls i get. If I don't have you in my contact list I dont answer or call you back. Thats my rule.
piece of advice; if you buy anything online locally always meet at the local police station to do the transaction. Scammers will try to get you to meet else where but insist on the local p.d. If they are legit they wouldn't be an issue. If they say no, walk away. I got robbed for a cell phone and cash earlier this year from a marketplace scam.
I got a phone call from the IRS saying i owe money. I said ah okay come and arrest me. I lol because my wife works for the IRS. I have also got a text msg saying my apple account is hacked. I never owned an apple product. I think they just cast large net of something and hope to get a catch. Just FYI IRS will send you letters before they ever call you.
My friend fell for the scam where you get a "job", and they send you a check to buy home office equipment, and then give you a website you have to buy the equipment from. The check bounces of course, and there is no office equipment.
I fell for the dating site scam. Even talked to the woman on a phone a bunch of times. Supposedly was coming to visit me when "disaster" struck of course, had her purse stolen.. just needed a few hundred dollars to make the rest of the way blah blah blah.. I'm an idiot🤡
The high pressure construction guy/salesman who comes to your door noticing that something about your house needs attention-the loose mortar on the brickwork or chimney, paint, sagging gutters whatever. Might severely overcharge you, collect money up front and abscond,or deliberately create more damage that he then says you must have him repair at much higher cost. Might claim that he has left over supplies from working at a nearby home and can give you an attractive price. Then maybe "bait and switch". Says your problem much worse than it looked. Best not to answer the door if you know that one of these is knocking.
Also, never log into your financial accounts or e-mails when you are in FREE public WiFi such as at the library, airport, coffee shop, etc. Their WiFi is not secure. I highly consider using a VPN like Nord when you surf online via public WiFi.
The only advice here that is wrong is the password advice. Length is all that really matters. Just take a few words that have meaning at the time, make a little story and put them into a string of like 24+ characters. Then add MFA and even if you’re notified of a breach they won’t have your MFA token and you only need to change whenever you feel like it. The change passwords stance was a choice on a whim and has been disproven. Make your password easy for you to remember and hard for the computer to guess, not the other way around. And use a password manager.
"My bank" called me and said I needed to change my online banking credentials because they said the info was compromised, I asked for the guys name and operator ID number or other identifying information, and called my bank directly. Sure enough, the guy that answered said it was fraudulent and said he wished everybody was as hesitant to give info to potential scammers as I was lol
I get text messages about once a week from unknown people wanting to buy my house and saying they will pay me cash on the spot regardless of its condition. I'm not falling for this. I will never sell my house without an attorney and a realtor.
I am looking for a job. I have received emails for jobs I applied for. Saying they have to run a credit check before they can hire. Not to mention they are starting a new business and need to do interviews at their home.
I was a victim of a Roomate scammer. I posted in. FB group looking for a Roomate and someone messaged me and sent a check to hold her spot. Then I got weird vibes and sent the money back but then the bank reversed the deposit because it was a bad check… now I know how bouncing a check works any to not accept checks from strangers 😅
Im Nigerian (and also from an actual traditionally royal Nigerian family), I remember a Nigerian trying to scam me. I saw the name and immediately knew the language so I contacted them back in the local language saying that I’d be happy to give this so called Prince money. Idk why, he never contacted me again lol.
The puppy dog scam they can also do with any type of pet. I almost fell for one when getting a pet bird. What stoped me from getting scammed was I followed my rule of “cash only and in person” once they asked for an online payment I called BS. They also changed their physical location to another state.
My elderly parents fall for fake Publishers Clearing House scams almost monthly. We called PCH directly, and they confirmed that they never notify people by mail, email or phone. If you win, they will physically show up at your door with cameras and hand you a check. But my parents still fall for anyone who calls or mails them requsting money to claim their prize. They also fell for the Spanish lottery scam.
Solid episode. Definitely got me thinking about what am i actually working towards. Stuff i thought i want, but looking back its not a all what i want.
You suggest letting scam calls go to voicemail because answering lets the scammer know they've reached a working number. Doesn't having the call picked up by voice mail do the same?
I know... It's weird .. but Ive heard the exact same thing, when I get the scam calls I always let them go to voicemail ... My husband always hit ignore.... And I get way less scam calls than him... so maybe it's true ... who knows lol
In general, if you even think a mail or call is legit, contact the bank/gov agency/organization by another means using their real phone. 99% of the time you'll hear "nope, not us ..." The job process has lots of risk, but a legit offer letter will not be asking for a deposit account already. You haven't even accepted the offer yet. You'll do this with payroll later.
My husband clicked on a message that said he had an important message from the bank. They use this to take 52k off a line of credit that we had paid off but didn’t close 😩😩😩. We have been fighting the bank now for 6 months because we used our emergency fund to pay it off so the bank didn’t charge us 10% interest.
We all know you're lying. You could easily withdraw 8% and not take away from your principal if your retirement is being properly invested. For the last 5 years my gains have been over 10% each year. Yes, during covid, It dipped to about -22% but that was very short-lived and rebounded extremely quickly. As long as you didn't panic with emotions and sell all your retirement then you were fine.
The only issue with the password change thing is that a lot of people write their passwords down because they forget them, which makes it much less secure. TFA is a much better idea.
What about marketplace scams? Whenever i try to sell something i get a few people, that don't live in my country, saying that they want it, they have their son pick it up, and they'll pay via Venmo or whatever. Also, i went to look at a car i wanted to buy, but the profile name and title name didn't match. They showed my a photo of the ID of the person selling it that did match the title, but lied to me when i asked if they were the true owners and on the title so i walked away. They were also selling cars a lot on their profile and the same cars on different profiles.
I keep getting stimulus ads you qualify for 2600 from the government of your under 63, or you qualify for 1400 if you're over 64 it will pay your rent groceries etc one said all you have to have is a ss# its everyday all day . When your password gets compromised its mostly the company's fault. It's popular to pass the blame on the customer but changing your password does little to protect you from the most likely source of data breach
Changing passwords is actually an online safety hazzard, don't do it, it's important to have different passwords for different things that are difficult, but don't change them.
I love your content, it's informative and much needed these days. However, the constant barrage of memes is very distracting. -Especially in a video this important. Thanks for what you do!
It is NOT a good idea to change passwords every 90 days. Studies have been done on this and what people found was that people often repeated use of passwords, used simple tricks to remember the passwords, or used simpler passwords due to forced changes. What is important is to have a strong password or passphrase unique to each site visited. This can be challenging, but some have been successful with the use of password managers. I don't use one, myself, but instead (literally) generate my passwords using a key derivation function (KDF) with a unique salt value used for each site. I'm not saying don't change passwords, but just be mindful that it will not necessarily increase security and, if sloppy, might actually be worse.
Please please please never click on text or email links claiming to be your financial institution saying your account is going to close or something similar. Go to your local branch and report it and/or check to make sure everything is okay. Don’t call the number that may be included on the text or email (it’s the suspect). Lots of spoofed text message fraud going on. They will get your credentials and wire money out of your account.
If you want a puppy, instead of buying, adopt one from the local shelter. Breeders treat their dogs really bad, keeping them in crates, and discard them when they get too old to have puppies.
Most definitely, all breeders are like this and there’s no good reason to research and purchase a specific breed for your family or support businesses that try to create healthy lines of animals.
Don't change your password every 90 days... Just make a really good one and only change it if you have reason to believe it's been exposed. Better yet, just get a password manager.
Change your passwords and dont tell this guy or any other guy how often you changing your passwords cause if they know you're changing your passwords every 90 days then they will get you on the 89th day.....
One thing I want to add about the first one -- you might get a text from a total stranger who pretends they are texting the wrong person. You tell them they have the wrong number and all of the sudden they want to be your friend. They will charm you with compliments, and. .if you're a guy. . .you will get alluring pictures of young ladies who want to invite you to chat on WhatsApp and get to know you. Then they will try to pique your interest with their cryptocurrency business. Don't fall for it!

I agree!
It's easy for to say that some people might live miles from a police station
Then drive or catch a taxi.

While you should always be cautious, if your computer and bank are susceptible to a MiTM attack you need a new bank ( and computer ) stat.
Can’t wait to report my insurance as a scam been finding them money for years and never got anything in return but more bills in the mail😂

Don't buy puppies, period! Go to your local shelter and adopt one.
This!!! Go to any shelter, lots of dogs and cats needing homes.
There are many good breeders and reasons to buy a “planned” puppy.
Puppy mills are way cheaper though.
Always good to be aware. I just don't give money to anyone!

The problem with changing passwords is you will never remember them and then have to go through risky behavior to get on site
If you sell things online, don't use your own phone number. Use a burner phone/number. (Apps let you do this.)
