Last year there was an incident where a blind man with a guide dog was refused service at a restaurant. It never ceases to amaze me how inflexible (or ignorant) people can be while trying to get their way or prove a point.

Practice what you preach with your words, you are defying yourself with the words that you used!!!!( ) First off nobody said f the blind or people dealing with some sort of mental disorder that needs a companion ...... there are people out in public that are terrified of all dogs 🐶!!!!!! And what about the thirty-five to forty percent of the population that has dog allergies or some type of pet allergy... Most restaurants that cater to animals have outdoor seating areas with dog bowls ect .... maybe ( ) is in you own mirror 🪞!!!!!!! Much love to all❤❤❤

@@user-vb2ij9rn7q A service animal is Not a snarling, foaming at the mouth menace. They are trained not to draw attention. If some people have a fear of dogs do they stay inside all day long? When I walk my dogs I do not let them walk into ppl or other dogs. Ppl generally avoid them because they are Pitbulls. I move about 15 feet to the side or cross the street even though they are very well-mannered. People who fear dogs need to stay away, go to therapy or be seated in another section of the restaurant I certainly understand the fear one has after being bitten by another dog. The dog owner has rights too. THERAPY, not fun. Animals make our world a better place. These dogs help people!

So many people try to pass their pets off as service animals, going so far as to buy vests with "service animal" patches, and that's caused skepticism in many. It's really a shame, and potentially dangerous, that people abuse the ADA regulations, which might've caused the pushback here.
(note: legitimate service dogs are NOT required to wear a vest, but untrained pets CAN interfere with the job of an actual service animal and should not be brought into spaces where only service animals are permitted.)

I'm so glad you made the point of what could happen I have a service dog he's a Maltese and so many people in public have said three things repeatedly 1 small purse type dogs cant be service animals 2 You don't look like you have disability and lastly your dog has to wear a vest
I've had to get cards that explain the law and I even have my disability on it I have epilepsy and am prone to seizures also I now have MS and lastly no my dog doesn't have to wear a red vest it's so hot in Florida all the time it's just not far to my dog he does wear a collar that says Service Animal but I've literally had the police called because I had to food shop and Publix wouldn't let my animal in they say I have to carry him in a bag would they tell me that if it were a Shepard too? unreal I've told them my joints are weak and can't carry him so I bought a dog stroller and you'd think that would solve the problem but Nope still always something said now it's Service animals don't go in strollers I can't Win I get it I do but I beg Fake people to please stop it's bad enough I've been blocked in a handicap parking spot because someone said they watched me go into store I looked fine what people don't realize is it some days takes all the effort o have to do things like a regular person I can't tell you how hard it all makes it I've gotten into my car and cried because how I've been treated I'm just trying to live a semi life none of this is any of my fault so ty for making your post I hope people realize not everyone is as fortunate as them no matter how it appears

I was blocked in a handicap space once. Well they didn't realize is I have a tow truck driver that's a good friend of mine. I called him and he was there in less than 5 minutes and towed their vehicle because they were illegally parked.
I then waited for them to come out and when they saw their vehicle wasn't there. They were pissed and I just smiled and waved and drove off.
My buddy said when they came up there they brought the cops with them. He showed them the pictures and the cop said yep you were illegally parked. Pay the fine.

Thanks for the program. My brother, a 71-72 Vietnam Vet, was gifted a service dog by Custom Canines, in Madison, WI. His golden, Winnie, has been a blessing. Where, several years ago, my brother would stay in the house for weeks at a time, avoiding people. Winnie has brought him back out to society, and I believe she is a lifesaver. I am so thankful! I asked her the same question that the gentleman of this story mentioned, if she wanted to know why I was disabled, I think that she felt embarrassed as she kept walking to her car. Other people are curious about other people disabilities when they are not physically visible.

I’ve had some really good experiences with my registered Service Canine and I’ve had some really bad experiences also.
I’m a Marine Corps vet with medical implants in my arms and legs. I required a medical alert and physical assist canine and my Rocky, a American German Shepherd, was amazingly smart in every aspect. He was very well loved by the Honolulu Police Department who would always ask to pose for pictures with us.
When it came to travel, Hawaiian Airlines were the best, with pilots and support staff wanting to pose with Rocky for inflight pictures and the passengers doing likewise.
Rocky just had that friendly baby face thing going and it’s sad that I had to put him down over four years ago and buried at a friend’s doggie cemetery on his 34 acre property in Waimanalo, which I go visit Rocky’s grave on a regular basis to offer a Buddhist prayer and burn incense in his honor.
It was just too painful for me to replace him at the time but I think I’m ready to obtain another Service Dog again but just can’t afford one right now. Maybe someday I’ll find another canine just like Rocky.

One of the main reasons I couldn’t replace Rocky is because of the strict Quarantine process to bring true bonafide service animals to the islands. Rocky and I did the instant release at HNL airport in 2009.
Wow! Has the time flown since we got here. My daughter went to 1st grade here at Jefferson Elementary and son was a baby and now both goes to UH.
I don’t have any fund but I do have a forwarding service through the ARRL to my regular mail. It is WH6DWF at ARRL dot net and I should get your mail as long as it doesn’t have a bunch of pictures and videos attached to it I think.
I appreciate the offer but I’ll be old enough to collect my SSN in a few months but on the other hand, I would love to have another Rocky with me to go with me to Washington DC, where he couldn’t help pull me along and keep a safe eye on me like all American German Shepherds do for their one master. I have some great pics of us together along officers from our HPD. My family has some great stories about Rocky saving my son’s life in which two coyotes sneaked up behind him when he was playing with his toy trucks behind the hotel we were staying at in Palm Springs before our last flight to permanently move to Hawaii. Somehow Rocky smelled them and spotted those one of those coyotes when all of us adults were standing there about 200 feet away and he made a beeline straight towards my son and Rocky tackled that first coyote in mid air as he was getting ready to pounce on my son. We and Rocky didn’t know there was a second coyote until he bit Rocky in the balls from behind. Never heard a dog scream like that before, chilling to think about again.
The two coyotes ran off and it was thought at the time that these may of been the ones that killed two other small children in the Palm Springs and Palm Desert area. We had to rush poor Rocky to the vet hospital and also to get tested for Rabies, which came back negative, thank goodness!
I got some bad news recently that I’m facing three eye surgeries for a modular hole in one eye and Cataracts in both eyes. It seems that I got some time before I have no choice but to get it done but I’ve already had 24 surgeries at the VA already.
The first one involves replacing the Retina with a gas bubble and having to look face down 24/7 for two weeks.
It’s sounds more scary than it is but I also know from experience that not all surgeries go well also. I have a lot of thinking to do and having another service dog could make this process easier on me if I had to guess.
Thank you very much for your offer and thank your family for their military service also. Mahalo! ❤️

Further, according to the ADA, a service dog can be trained by the owner and does not need to be trained through any specific organization. Therefore, a service dog handler should never be asked to show credentials of any kind to verify their dog is a working dog.

@@bikeman1x11 after watching the story again, it does appear that the dog is for emotional support but you can’t really be certain there isn’t a medical disability as well. It should be noted that the ADA recognizes PTSD as a disability and affords all of the protections to PTSD service dogs. Also there are medical issues that are not readily obvious that the dog could also be trained to detect and assist with. My service dog can detect a change in my heart beat which is related to a heart condition that if left unaddressed at the time can lead to a heart attack. That’s an invisible disability you wouldn’t see and could think my dog is for emotional support. My dog is also trained to help with mobility issues which come and go - again unless you see the dog assisting me stand or get up after a fall you wouldn’t know there was a medical disability. That’s why the ADA question about what service does the dog provide is critical is determining if the dog is a service dog vs emotional support dog.

I ran a kitchen for my church ministry to feed needy people in our area. We had a problem with some unethical people trying to use the ADA Federal regulations regarding service dogs to bring their common house pet into our facility. People understood we could not ask something like, "what is your disability?" This really pissed me off to see people taking advantage of the ADA law, so I did some research on the subject, and it turns out that there are rules that most people who are unfairly abusing the law don't know about. 1) the owners must follow all local laws regarding licensing and leashes, or the establishment can call the pound/animal control to have the dog impounded and removed. 2), the dog must be under control at all times. If the animal displays any uncontrolled aggression, then again, a phone call to animal control to have the dog impounded. Now most normal people that have real support animals know this and act within the law and keep the dog leashed and also animals trained for this function rarely get out of control. We ended up using that info only twice and the problem went away once word got out that we don't put up with being disrespected and we knew the rules better than they did.
We did have two veterans who came often each with a support dog that we always made sure they dog food to go just for the support dogs in the crowd.

Prior to finally retiring, I was a security supervisor at a large retail mall. On a semi regular basis, we would have a tenants staff (usually young student parttimers) create an issue over a service dog. The solution turned out to be simple. I typed up a simple memo on the subject including excerpts from the law, printed off a batch and gave one to every tennant with the request it be posted in an employee area or inserted into an employee information binder. For the next 4.5 years until I retired, we had zero incidents.

This is becoming a far too common problem facing those with REAL service animals. While the ADA law helps some, it doesn't go far enough. Within the last decade or so, a new trend has come about; the "emotional support animal", which can be anything from a baby kitten to a snake. People that have these animals try to use the ADA as a reference for bringing their PETS with them everywhere they go, including food establishments and airplanes. And with this trend, a money making venture has sprung up... people and unscrupulous veterinarians who will supply one with fake certifications and accreditations claiming that ESAs are legitimate service animals.
The government really does need to begin accrediting true service dog training facilities, and providing those who need service animals with a certificate that has a seal of the accrediting office proving that the animal has been trained to certain standards. They also need to shut down illicit internet sites that provide false documentation to ESAs for money.

It didn't go over well for the businesses who jumped on board with the policy. People would not go to those establishments for the reasons you mentioned and more. Eventually most businesses stopped allowing dogs inside, and the ones that continued would only allow them on outside patios, if they had them. What do you do when two dogs are in close proximity to one another and they get into a fight? The owners need to realize that taking Spot to their favorite restaurant with the family brings GREAT liability, no matter how friendly you think he is. And just because you think you have to take your dog everywhere you go, have some respect for those you impose your desires on! Spot would probably rather be at home than at the grocery store, bar or restaurant, surrounded by strangers and having to smell all that food that he can't have, anyway!

Personally I require a cane to walk due to a shattered pelvis multiple hip replacements and spinal injuries so people never questioned me with my service dog before I had to retire him except once at a mall a security guard questioned me until I turned around and he saw the cane and some of the scars. Some of our fellow Veterans have such severe PTSD issues that they struggle with going out in public and their dogs are trained to spot when they are having issues and try to get them redirected both physically and mentally so they don’t have a full blown PTSD attack in public
