    When I first heard that Dylan's song, I used to play the bass only. I decided to learn the guitar for that precise song. It was something like 7 years ago. Didn't take any lessons, just learned, chord by chords, and then fingerpicking. I've been looking for a good tutorial for that song for YEARS and did not find the right one. People were going way too fast. And then I found your videos... They were made for me ! You just make travis style easy to understand. I started with Kathy's song and I just finished learning Dylan's song. 7 years after I bought my first guitare I finally made it : I know how to play the song I wanted to play the most. Thank you so much !

    Amazing breakdown, it's the little things lost in printed chord charts of his music that makes me wonder "Is this even the same song?". You buy a chord book and it's simplified to hell that they don't even signify capos or particular tunings, it's a case of "yup, this'll do, print it and sell it for 30 bucks".

    • @MikesMusicMethod
      @MikesMusicMethod  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know. It's pretty awful. And the copyright law is crap. Even making these videos I sometimes I have to split any ad revenue even if it's just me playing a version I have learned by ear. It's less about the money or more about just a free exchange of ideas. Once a song is in the world, it's in the world! No court should be able to slow down the spread of a great melody or idea. But that's the libertarian in me! So yeah, these books get put together by big publishing companies and make the content appeal to the widest range of players possible. They're often not accurate or even in the correct key!

    Interesting. I learned this from Doc Watson's version in D with no capo. In measure 9-12 of the chorus, Doc makes some chord substitutions that are interesting and sounds good to me. Instead of |C///|G7///|A-/G/|F///|, he does (if he did it in C and I got it right from seeing him play it) |C///|E7///|A-///|D7///|. In D, it is |D///|F7///|B-///|E7///|. That and the next 4 measures are his intro ( |D///|F7///|B-///|E7///|C///|A7///|C|C|). I must have got it from looking at him play since I don't have a good enough ear to figure that out from the recording. This was before youtube. Saw him in person a few times in the Chicago area. One time at Old Town School of Folk Music when I took my son to try and counter his head banging stage.

    A miracle like I’ve read on some of these comments.
    Anyway, I kind of have the song tied down now but I’m just wondering how do you finish the chorus to start playing the C of the verse ?
    I thought maybe you can finish the Chorus C with the rhythm of the Verse C which is actually the GC.
    Anyway I thank you for these lessons.

      really really appreciate the comment. Thanks Mistico. The channel has been a great joy and i'm getting lots of positive feedback. Glad you're learning as well! Share some of your songs with me!
      I'm not sure I totally understand yoru question but i'll try my best to answer. The chorus just ends on a C chord no? From there you continue on with the C and start singing the next verse.
      Now on the recording Dylan will sometimes end the chorus on the C...and then from that C go to a G, but he's just looping some chords to take the harmonic solo. I didnt bother to tab out every transition but they're basically some truncated form of the verse.
      I just end the chorus on C...and linger there for a moment (a measure) and start singing the next verse.

    Thank you for these tutorials for the verse and chorus, clear, well spoken, with good advice on how to practice the individual movements. This was spring break project for me, and I've got them down. My follow up questions though, have been repeated by a couple other comments; How do I put the verse and chorus together? And additionally the song isn't truly "just verse->chorus->verse 4 times and don't think twice (kachow) about it" is it?

    • @MikesMusicMethod
      @MikesMusicMethod  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you learned it!! Congrats.
      Yes, thanks for the feedback. The videos I've made over the last year plus goes through the songs completely, measure by measure and note for note.
      I'm not sure what the stick up is for ya so it's hard to help. Id Jjust follow along with a chord chart, the last chord of the verse goes into the top of the chorus. As for the structure it literally is just verse chorus verse chorus etc...now the problem with tons of Dylan songs is during his harmonica solos he'll just leave out random beats or random chords and shorten them as he wishes. But to go through all the variations would have made for a 50 minute video. Which, ha, I've done those and don't shy away from the detail anymore.
      I'll have to rewatch some of the video and see where the specific confusion is. Sorry for that hang up, and like I said, I think I've remedied it in my more recent content. What songs next?@

      @@MikesMusicMethod Thank you! My dad somewhat recently passed away and I have been teaching myself how to fingerpick, since that was how he played. Me, I've just played hardcore punk my whole life and have some uh... catching up to do haha! I think the next song I learn will be another Dylan song, "Tomorrow Is a Long Time".
      The specific hangup is solely in transitioning, whether verse->chorus or chorus->verse. I know Dylan is a bit noodle-y, so there's certainly room for improvisation or my own embellishments. Which ultimately, I will be doing. So, going off your reply, I could hang around the last chord of either verse or chorus for a bit and that should suffice?
      I would love to hear your full rendition of the song! I notice that your more recent videos have a cover version, and a separate teaching video (LOVE that structure btw). Could Mike give Don't Think Twice that treatment?

It's like...he knows it's a joke. He just does it to F with his audience. So i couldnt handle going through every little part in between the verses. Plus...it's Dylan. So he's always adding or removing 2 beats from measures unexpecedtly. But i'd argue it doesnt matter. Stick to playing it one way and do that. No one, not even me or you, would catch it otherwise. You're right! Yeah, that C7 sets up the expectation to the F. It's called a "secondary dominant". In the key of F the V chord is the C7. So we're breaking the key of C with an unexpected C7, but then it "functions" or resolves how we'd hear it in F major. A great and timeless trick!

      !? really? Here is Dylan doing it live. (th-cam.com/video/vnXbSGTg6dI/w-d-xo.html) Sure, it's not quite as fancy and has less frills, but it's not remarkably different. And even on the studio version, it's pretty damn sloppy! haha. Where di you here Langhorne played it?? Thanks for the comment. Are there any other tunes on this record he didnt play the guitar on?

      Thanks for the Carnegie Hall link. Interesting performance. His harmonica playing was al lot different from the studio version.
      The Langhorne/Dylan debate is arguable and is still hotly debated today. I'll attache a link - it's long text and I've copied the relevant section, which I'll type here now.
      The people now calls Clinton Heylin, a famous Dylan biographer and sessionologist, who has also studied this case thoroughly. Mr Heylin, are you of the opinion that the guitar on ‘Don’t Think Twice’ was played by Bruce Langhorne?
      I definitely am,
      With all the musicians, save Langhorne, paid scale and sent packing, Dylan got back on the program with a gorgeous rendition of ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right’ that might just have illustrated how good a guitarist Dylan had become, save that it’s Langhorne who provides the faultless accompaniment. Whatever ‘very interesting things with guitar’ Dylan was coming up with, they were evidently best expressed by a virtuoso like Langhorne.

      Now me again. So, it's hard to know. Unreliable memories of the session musicians, technical personnel present etc. One thing, for me that's certain is Dylan is first and foremost a poet. His singing voice is unique and, I think, if he didn't write the songs he writes, then he might not have made it this big! And, lastly, it's such a great song and arrangement on the Freewheeling LP. It was the first Dylan song I heard and it made me a fan over the decades.
      Thanks for your comments, Mike, as well as your brilliant lessons and analyses.
      Here's the link to the website about Bruce Langhorne.

    Bro you’re fuckin awesome man but I have to skip through alotta your chat. So much so it’s hard to follow where the hell we’re at.
    Hey, I’m not making tutorials, I’ve no idea how hard it must be but ye. I may be wrong, I may be a dick for saying so but if you cut out the chat it might be better. Then again, maybe other folks like it and I’m just mongo. Feedback either way.

      Hey, sorry for the delayed response. But yes! I appreciate the feedback. I'm certainly aware of the personal ramble. But yeah, like you said. For every bit of annoyance on my chat, I get several other people saying that they feel like it adds to the personal element, like they've got a private music teacher/friend who they're handing with. Sorry man, but it comes with the package. I try not to overthink it either way. I just try to be myself and teach as best I can. And I think as the videos progress, there's less ramble. And if there's not less, it's at least better organized and timestamped so it's easier to manuever.
