If you listen to the subtle main guitar riff on "Fairies Wear Boots," you will notice that it actually sounds like a fairy tiptoeing around outside. Then when the identical riff gets heavier it is because the fairy is dancing around with a dwarf who obviously weighs more and stomps around rather than tiptoeing. It is brilliantly conceived in terms of making the guitar DO what the lyrics describe. Listen around 1min 23sec to around 2 min on the original song. You WILL hear it...and Martin is clearly insane for choosing this song. 😁
I know I'm the only person that likes Rock And Roll Doctor, there's something about that main riff that draws me in. It's a direction I'm glad Sabbath didn't pursue further, but for a one-off heavy boogie rocker I kind of enjoy it. Swinging The Chain I love too. Great episode!
@@iancocks9408 That's how I see it too, Technical Ecstasy is my least favorite of the Ozzy albums but Rock And Roll Doctor and Dirty Women I've always enjoyed.
Great choices guys, I don't really have a problem with "Fairies Wear Boots" either because I could see why one would get sick of it. Hard choices because they could do almost no wrong during that period
I may be the only person in the world who loves Am I Going Insane (Radio). It connected with me when I was going through a bad depression as a teenager and has stuck around ever since. Who Are You is cool to me because of its creepiness. It's a track that terrified me the first time I heard it. I agree about Rock and Roll Doctor. I have to skip that track whenever I listen to Technical Ecstacy, which I otherwise enjoy. I enjoy the sadness of She's Gone. In its place I would put Changes because of its lyrics. I don't connect with most of Never Say Die, so many of my selections would come from that album.
The easy way would be picking these 5 "songs": Embryo, Orchid, FX, Don't Start (Too Late) and Breakout. But let's do it the hard way: proper songs from the first 6 albums. So it goes: Solitude, Changes, Who Are You, Am I Going Crazy and Supertzar. Yes, Supertzar! I know Sabotage for decades and I still hate that choir. But once Martin picked Fairies, anything goes, right?
I really love "Warning." It's my top song on the debut. I really love "Fairies wear boots." It's my top song on "Paranoid." I really love "Am I going insane ?" but it's not my favourite on Sabotage. It's actually my least favourite. I really like "Evil Woman" too. The first copy of the album I had didn't have it, it had "Wicked world" and I never noticed the substitution when I bought it again so "Evil Woman" came as something of a surprise. I actually like it more than "Wicked woorld" although I think that's a great song too, and one of those where Tony tries to do a Jimmy page with an electric solo guitar, a la "Heartbreaker." I can't do an album of the worst of the Sabs of the 70s, partly because I'm not very familiar with the last 2 albums, partly because I adore the first 6; but I can make an EP and call it "T Rextacy" {a nod to "Technical Ecstacy}. On it are fairly obvious tracks: "FX" which I think is coked out horseshit, "Changes", which I don't actually mind but which I wouldn't cry if I never heard again, "Planet Caravan" which I actually quite like but I find that it feels like the band weren't taking it seriously and were trying to show their softer Zeppelin-esque side, something I think they did right up until "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath," "Embryo" which I like but is like a bird that flies in through the kitchen window and then flies out again before you even get a chance to look at it, and "Fluff" which again, I like, but which isn't essential. I think some of their acoustic and softer stuff on those first 6 priceless albums are superb. The only heavy number that might have snuck in would have been "Children of the grave" but on reflection, it's still a really good track.
I never thought Bill Ward sang that song. I’m going to stick my theory that Dave Walker sang it but they refuse to admit because of legal and/or contractual reasons.
Yes, "Paranoid" and "Iron Man" have always been boring to me from day one. The massive airplay has made them almost nauseating for me. But key is boring from the get-go.
I did that for many years. Then I got wise ! I don't really care how it was meant to be, I care how I like it and at my age, I can't be listening to songs I don't like.
I'd buy the album, the patch and the 8-track too... :-) And the pin...and the sticker. Seriously, those albums are so perfect, I don't think any 70's Sabbath song is a throw away. I'd say the weakest one to me is probably R 'n' R Doctor, and FX isn't great on its own, but the way it sets the mood for the striking intro of Supernaut is classic! I have always had a soft spot for Am I going Insane (Radio) and Evil Woman. Great show. Cheers.
I completely agree with Breakout, Swinging The Chain and She’s Gone. Definitely disagree with Fairies Wear Boots! I would add Dirty Women, Shockwave, Supertzar and Back Street Kids. I actually love Am I Going Insane. I really like Ozzy’s singing and vocal melody and love all that laughing and screaming at the end! That scared the crap out of my brother John and I when we first heard it!

Two worst of records already exist for Black Sabbath, Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die. To put Fairies Wear Boots on a worst of list is heresy and punishable by fire.
Yeah, these all work for me. I wouldn't skip any of these if they came on, though. I could easily put "Iron Man" on here, too. I have never really liked that one.
@Brian Baker I almost could have put "Iron Man" on too because it's got a lot of aimless jammy stodge on it. But it's also got such superb riffage that this saves it !
I actually really enjoy Warning, always have. I love the sparsity in that song, the negative space. You can really hear Bill Ward’s jazz style drumming really well cos the mix isn’t so dense. My only issue with that song is the bloated, extended guitar soloing. That’s boring for non-guitar players.
Although you tried hard to build a bad album - the album would still be quite a good listen. It seems like BS has not enough bad songs to fill a whole record. I definitely prefer Martin's side - there are some really good songs on it :)
