    Hold up: wait until you see the episode, guys. This isn't about calling Bent Out of Shape the worst Rainbow album. Please go check out Episode 1 of this concept, Lazy Nights, where we BUILD the worst Kiss album.

      Great episode! Almost all those are the ones I delete off of my Rainbow playlists. Actually though I do like the live version of Catch the Rainbow (for Ritchie's guitar soloing.....'cause that's what I am usually seeking in both Rainbow and Purple music).

    Bent out of shape is a masterpiece. JLT is its maximum expression, it also excellently resisted the passage of time, it seems that it was recorded yesterday.

    Catch the Rainbow and Rainbow Eyes belong on a best of Rainbow, two of my favourite rock ballads. Its the kind of fantasy rock that justified Ritchie going solo in the first place

    Is this an ill-timed April Fool's episode? Rainbow Eyes and Catch The Rainbow are amazing songs, love the groove of LA Connection as well.

    "Tearin Out My Heart" is one of my favorite Rainbow songs, so yes I would buy the album for that alone.

  • @pjones8404

    Here is my version of the "Worst Of"
    Side 1:
    1. No Time to Lose - Down to Earth
    2. Stand and Fight - Stranger In Us All
    3. Desperate Heart - Bent Out of Shape
    4. Power - Straight Between the Eyes
    5. Mid Town Tunnel Vision - Difficult to Cure
    Side 2:
    1. Since You Been Gone - Down To Earth
    2. Sensitive to Light - Long Live Rock and Roll
    3. Do You Close Your Eyes - Rising
    4. Snowman - Bent Out of Shape
    5. Tite Squeeze - Straight Between the Eyes
    "Black Sheep of the Family" - I like the song but understand completely Martin's thoughts.
    "Catch the Rainbow" is a pure classic in my opinion. The expanded live versions are some of my all-time favorite Dio/Rainbow performances!!
    "L.A. Connection" - agree completely. Just sits flat without anything exciting to hold on to.
    "I Surrender" - Not my favorite from the JLT era. They should have opened the album with "Spotlight Kid"!!
    "Tearin' Out My Heart" - Agree again. This is a boring track that doesn't take us anywhere.
    "If You Don't Like Rock and Roll" - The weakest track on the debut in my opinion and worth a spot here.
    "Rainbow Eyes" - Beautiful track and Ronnie is marvelous. BUT...way, WAY misplaced on this album.
    "Since You Been Gone" - I hate this song!
    "Difficult To Cure" - Not as enjoyable on the studio version as it was live on "Final Vinyl" supported by the Symphony.
    "Rock Fever" - Don't care for the track at all.

    EDIT: Hi Folks! We are NOT calling Bent Out of Shape the "Worst" Rainbow album... We are creating a new compilation album called Bent WAY Out of Shpae and picking the "worst" rainbow albums to appear on it. The Bent Out of Shape thing is just a pun.
    What songs would you have included? What songs would you take off? Would you buy this album!?

    Fun episode! Those are very good picks for a "Worst of" album.....And here are a few honourable mentions to add to a bonus disc to make it a box set: Do You Close Your Eyes (from Rising....cringeworthy lyrics and uninspired song construction); Long Live Rock & Roll (title track of the album of the same name - tacky, cliche, goes nowhere song); Magic (from Difficult to Cure....is a cover song and worse, it always reminded me of an overproduced Gino Vanelli song); Tite Squeeze (from Straight Between the Eyes....recycled riff from L.A. Connection with even less inspired lyrics); and Stand And Fight (from Stranger in Us All......the harmonica and the poppy feel of it).

    Make Your Move
    If You Don't Like Rock N Roll
    Makin' Love
    Stand and Fight
    Tire Squeeze
    Run With The Wolf
    Rainbow Eyes
    Rock Fever
    Too Late For Tears
    Jealous Lover

    Love the concept - I actually love LA Connection and Since You've Been Gone. Rainbow Eyes is the worst song on 'Long Live' but I do like it. Have no use for "If You Don't Like Rock n Roll" and most of 'Stranger In Us All' - funny how neither of you guys chose songs from that record. I guess it begs the question, do you guys consider it a real Rainbow album?

  • @MetalMan73100
    @MetalMan73100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Terrific idea for an episode. I don´t even have to make much of an effort to arrive at my personal Bent WAY Out Of Shape, because the band itself did it on my behalf back in 1981. Difficult To Cure is a thorough stinker of an album, a lightweight and uninspired insult to the idea of music itself. I dislike every second of that album. I would gladly take 1995´s swan song album, Stranger In Us All, over Difficult To Cure.

  • @NostalgiaVHS
    @NostalgiaVHS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Disagree completely about I Surrender. I think its a great rock song, and it's a little poppy but it's got some heavy guitars, and JLT's vocals are killer. I don't particularly hate Since You Been Gone, but I like I Surrender a lot better. I don't like the clap-along chorus to Since You been Gone, and I prefer JLT as a vocalist.

  • @Mountaingloom
    @Mountaingloom 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some interesting choices here, but picking Catch the Rainbow boggles the mind haha. For me, and I get that this is subjective, Catch the Rainbow has one of Blackmore's finest performances and he always seemed to relish playing it live.
    I really like Bent out of Shape and Straight Between the Eyes but most of my list would be JLT songs because those albums were so inconsistent...

  • @JCStorm76

      we're not calling bent out of shape the worst, we're create a "worst of" Rainbow compilation album called "bent way out of shape" basically we come up with what we think the track listing would be if Rainbow released a "worst of" album, and we used "bent way out of shape" as a pun on bent out of shape"... there may be only 1 or very few "bent out of shape" tracks on here because we consider the entire catalog, hope that makes sense

    Martin Popoff, you have every right to not like "L.A. Connection" and the other songs which you deem in a similar style, but what you fail to mention is that the style of blues and older rock'n' roll exemplified in these types of Blackmore performances make up a foundational aspect of Blackmore's musical upbringing which largely shaped a key formative aspect to his guitar playing. Whether you PREFER these types of songs or not to Rainbow's other type of more mystical and early heavy metal composing is another matter. The point I'm trying to make is that because of this type of tune's INFLUENCE on shaping the young Blackmore's playing, you will ALWAYS get at least one or two tunes per record in this musical direction throughout Ritchie's hard rock years (obviously not in Blackmore's Night) because of the key part this type of playing and writing played in Blackmore's development. You need to look at the overall scope of Blackmore's development from the very beginning forward to understand WHY these types of songs continually appeared sprinkled throughout Rainbow and certainly with Purple.

    @ianmacdonald7987 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I used to feel the same about Catch the Rainbow but have mellowed to it over the years. Rainbow Eyes is the only RJD song that would make this album for me. Many comment on how beautiful Ronnie’s voice is on that track but I find it unlistenable. Just glad it was the last track so I could lift the needle without having to put it back down. The rest of the selections would probably come from the JLT era for me. Probably mainly from Bent Out of Shape, which is the only Rainbow album I couldn’t bring myself to buy. But I would have Can’t Happen Here from DTC and probably (sorry Marco) Spotlight Kid as well. Eyes of Fire from SBTE might sneak in too. Doogie would probably go unscathed because I dislike BooS so much!!
    Edit: amazed that people comment without actually watching the video. WTF is up with that?

    Um... would an artist that has been around a long time put out an album called The Worst of? Jefferson Airplane did just that (although to be fair, they hadn't been around for decades...)
    OK, I'm with you on If You Don't Like Rock and Roll and Catch the Rainbow, but Black Sheep of the Family is my favorite track on that album...
    Medieval Moat Metal- hee!
    HE SAID DO YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES! YASS!
    LA Connection should have been on Down To Earth. Would have been the best track on the album instead of the worst. Actually that whole album belongs on your album.
    joyful joyful we adore thee... difficult to cure in church....
    can we just agree that it is beneath Ritchie Blackmore's dignity to do songs that mention rock or rock and roll in the title?

    Since You Been Gone and All Night Long are the reason I'm not a Graham Bonnet fan. They were playing on MTV, local radio, and the skating rink on constant rotation when Down To Earth came out. I get sick to my stomach when they come on. I prefer I Surrender over both of them and it's down to Joe Lynn Turner's tone being better than Graham's. Graham's voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

    I'm going to have to be a contrarian contrarian as I quite like the sound of that album - with the exception of Rock Fever, never really liked that one that much, nor Power from the same album. I'd certainly add all the rubbish tracks that they did recently with the Ronnie Romero lineup. Tearing out my heart was also improved when they did it live, with the extended ending, much like they did with Love's no Friend.

How about doing an episode about albums that could have been better had B sides(not on albums) or unreleased tracks been included. And maybe adjusting the sequencing to remove naff tracks. Much more interesting. Just an idea.

    No Martin Popoff, wrong again. "Black Sheep" is NOT an r&b song, and it doesn't really have much at all to do with the musical direction (Funk/soul) that Deep Purple were moving into with Stormbringer that made Blackmore want to leave Purple. I wouldn't say it epitomizes the sound of Rainbow as we would come to know, but your musical assessment is definitely inaccurate; it is not an r&b song, it is actually closer to a southern rock song than it is to soul music. Whether it's your favorite Rainbow song or not is irrelevant. You are also wrong about the performances on "Black Sheep" in one specific regard; Craig Gruber actually sounds really good on bass on this tune and the entirety of the first Rainbow record so you're way off on that too. I say these things and I have no particular specific love for Rainbow's version of (or Quatermass's) "Black Sheep," but your assessment is largely inaccurate in your definitions of the specific musical elements that you dislike. You have every right to like it or not and that's fine, it's not my favorite Rainbow song either by a long shot, but your musical analysis of the song is incorrect.

    How in the world could y'all not put Snowman on this? That song stinks, its a throw away keyboard song that's over 4 minutes long.
