- On this episode of Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw, our hall of famers Gerald Brisco and John Bradshaw Layfield welcome wrestling historian and dentist to the stars, Dr. Mike Lano! Dr. Lano shares stories of his time working with a number of talent throughout the years and what he's doing now.
Ray Stevens and Peter Maivia used to get into fights with members of the Hell's Angels at a Bar near the Cow Palace. My uncle was a Cop, and he was called a few times to restore order. He told me about this one time when Stevens and Maivia beat the hell out of 6 of them and sending 3 to the hospital. Those guys were legit tough.
Dr. Mike Lano should write a book about the SF and LA territories.
John Tolos used to wrestle for Roy Shire from time to time.
You guys need to have Mike Mooneyham on to talk Mid Atlantic and Georgia wrestling
Like always great interview!!!
Oh, good lord...😂😂😂
Johnny Rodz as Java Ruuk got Piper over
Mike Lano obviously doesn't know the story
Mitch, you're right that Roddy managed Johnny as Java Ruuk(Johnny told me at the time to avoid having to change his JR initials he already had on his tights & boots. But Johnny had never done his Ed Farhat character & Mike Lebell was doing the promoter he was legit closest to in Vince Sr a favor having Johnny + SD Jones in for X amount of months & allowing them to shine. But Johnny didn't get Piper over. I believe Johnny got himself over but since he couldn't speak or pretend to speak Arabic, he needed a mouthpiece. And Gene Lebell in particular was trying to expose his lead charge- Piper along with our booker Leo Garibaldi, to as many speaking ops as possible.
I certainly mangled saying shooting L.A./Lebell ringside was my primary territory home base while doing the same for Northern Calif/S.F. Shire so I apologize for that. If you know more about Johnny in L.A. in 1976(who I purposely posed for my camera in 2000 with Roddy, Gene Lebell & Leo Garibaldi at our first CAClub reunion once we moved it from L.A. to Vegas), how about coming on my own show & we can talk about both Piper and Johnny's time in L.A. and anything else. I'm at wrealano@aol.com & if I'm wrong on anything, let's hash it out. And Andre C-do you or anyone have even taped audio on cassette of the KCOP where Tolos threw Dr Bernhard Schwartz' Monsels Powder into Fred's eyes with our great announcer Dick Lane going ballistic doing commentary with Jimmy Lennon Sr chiming in. Mike Tenay said he'd taped it & soon after I started taping ALL the interviews, etc on casettes for every Weds tv from the Olympic(re-aired the following Saturday morning on KMEX-ch 34 & KCOP-tv13 Saturday nights. Actually family relatives taped most of them for me to help out.
And Johnny Rodz told me that at the time, repeating it several times that year which always got a laugh and a smile. It made sense to keep the JR initials the same and come up with a character name with those initials.

I honestly am not interested in hashing out anything in emails
It is what it is and that's what it is
Great history lesson...Thank you.
Think I forgot to mention when Vince Jr purchased our Los Angeles office when Mike Lebell folded/closed shop in Dec 1982, that amongst the artifacts included in the sale was the 2nd Blassie powder blue all steel cage(after the first one which was rickety wood and metal that rocked back/forth when the boys tried climbing it). THAT was the famous steel cage used in Hogan/Bundy, @WMania 3 at the L.A. Sports Arena. Also used at other WWF house shows, etc until it was replaced.
Dr Mike Lano has a lot of wrestling knowledge
Great stories! Just read Capoaya book on Gorgeous George it is Awesome!
Bradshaw and Briscoe should invite me on their show because I am wrestling historian at 49 years old.
Agreed
mike lano has been around since the 1960s though, he's got a couple decades on you at least
He forgot an important element ... Tolos beat Blassie clean the week before for the America's Title and felt like that is why he thought he was deserving of most popular wrestler
The legendary Dr. Mike Lano!

@@cowpalacedave lol please
My Uncle was a Cop, and he used to break up fights in a bar near the Cow Palace when Ray Stevens and Peter Maivia used to fight Hell's Angels.
Thought he was dead?
yessss
Not for nothing
Mike Lano is annoying
He hasn't shut up
Mitch, when I was asked to do the show, they wanted me to discuss ALL the West coast territories from Vancouver, Calgary on down to WA state, Portland/Don Owen and SoCal/Los Angeles all in ONE hour which I said was impossible as there was so much cool history in each territory/office. I asked to just do one of them. And felt to pack all that in as best as I could in an hour, that I had to be a motormouth. My apologies if I annoyed you.
Shut the hell up!
Its his job to answer our questions
and you got a response from gerald brisco & mike lano so there ya go!
