Nice find. I have the same ratchet and it is still functioning properly.

Some grease hardens up over time. The vintage grease stayed gooey forever! LOL

Do you remember awhile back I was having trouble with a Craftsman ratchet? About trying to oil it and couldn't get the oil in? That's the same ratchet you have there. It was doing the exact same thing as the one you have there. I cleaned it but I also added fresh grease to mine. Anyway, that's all it needed was cleaned. Whatever lubricant they were putting in at the factory wasn't very good. At least I don't think it was to gum up like that.

I've been using that model for most of my life, that was one of the handful of tools that failed and got taken back to Sears and got a new one or as I recall actually a rebuilt one...............Every now and then I run into some of that hardened gummy grease, last time was in a HF right angle drill adapter that I bought new about 20 years ago.

I'm surprised that just a little dried grease caused the skipping. I was expecting to see sheared off teeth when you opened it up. Goes to show how important lubrication is.

In this model the 1/4” and 3/8” are 24 teeth. The 1/2” is 32 teeth.

This would be mid 70's I believe.
After that the oil port disappeared.
Early 90's definitely is when they went to plastic for the QR button then the plastic selector lever followed that.

I have two of the 1/2" drives and just saved a little 1/4"! Unfortunately the 1/4" is missing the reversing switch.
These are my favorite pear head style ratchets because everything on them is overbuilt yet serviceable and the handles are much more rounded than the newer raised panels; these feel far nicer in my hands!

The old Craftsman ratchets couldn't be beat with those course teeth, the newer fine teeth weren't as strong.

They are fairly strong , but everything else sucks. The 1/2 version works much better

Another example of poor and or lack of proper maintenance. I was never a fan of these ratchets myself but if cared for they get the job done.

I suspect this ratchet didn’t get used much at all. Probably sat in a box for 50 years lube drying up

Never have been a fan of craftsman I get why they are popular USA made and cheaper than tool truck brands and they get the job done. Sometimes. I've used plenty craftsman ratchets vintage is always better. But they were nothing in comparison to indesto proto Williams new Britain
