It may be overkill, but If you want to truly encase your transom in epoxy, I recommend drilling the bolt holes out about 3/8" bigger than the bolt diameter. Put tape across the holes on one side, flip it over and pour epoxy into the holes. Sand it smooth after it hardens, then drill the holes out to the appropriate diameter. Thanks for the videos Mike, they've been a great help with my boat projects.
Hey brother I really do appreciate all the knowledge that you share with us and I do enjoy the channel immensely but I do hate to hear you say these will be the last ones I'm new to the channel but I've gone back and watched a lot of the videos and one thing I've noticed is everyone gets a little bit better you figure out what least one new thing it's an evolution and you are leading the the tiny boat Nation
Very cool good work man! I have been rebuilding a fiberglass boat on my channel. In the future I might find a aluminum boat to fixup, the fabricating process your doing looks really intriguing. Plus I react to fiberglass resin which is very unfortunate. at any rate I subscribed! I'm hoping to learn from your channel keep it up!
I’ve been in the process of rebuilding an aluminum boat myself. Apparently I wasn’t the first. Never had trouble with fiberglass. Seems people are more willing to just slap anything on tin and call it a fix. I’m having to redo a lot of past mistakes the previous owner made. I know this is late, but if you have any insight on things I need to look out for, I’d be grateful. My main concerns are the support rib bands and some really gnarly “repairs” they performed on the transom.
Damn man 🙌 great job! Will be doing a 16' jon boat over the winter and really appreciate these videos! They help a ton as far as ideas and directions. Much appreciated!!
I have a question i’m planning to buy a 14-16 ft aluminum boat for fishing and adding a removable wooden casting deck to the boat . should I use west system resin to seal the deck before i carpet or just use a big box store stain
When I did my transom I did a layer of OSM because it creates a wear layer so it will resist damage that might let water get through. Only takes a little extra time, wet the wood, lay down osm, wet osm, quickly sand after it's set. Good to go.
@@stabiae1 offset strand mat, it's a type of fiberglass cloth, you can actually find it in small amounts at home depot for around 5 bucks or you can buy a whole roll off Amazon for maybe 50 bucks.
What is fir rated plywood?? When I google it it tries to search for fire rated plywood. Or do you just mean make sure you use 3/4" doug fir also what are you using for fasteners? Stainless? Thanks again!
@@TinyBoatNation ACQ treated is a no go on aluminum. MCA treated can be used on aluminum. Not sure if they have anything different but this is what we have in MD. Still don't know if I'd use it on a boat.
You sell an epoxy resin kit on your Amazon store that's different than the one you used on this transom. Do you recommend one or the other? Will both work equally well?
After you resin coated the new plywood and installed it what, if anything, do you do to the holes in the wood that you have to drill to fasten everything together again?

Put tape across the holes on one side, flip it over and pour epoxy into the holes. Sand it smooth after it hardens, then drill the holes out to the appropriate diameter. I also recommend using stainless steel truss head bolts and applying a marine adhesive sealant (e.g., 3M 5200) to the bolt head on the hull exterior and use nylon locking nuts. Snug the bolts up while the sealant is wet, but not too tight... you don't want to squeeze it all out. After it has cured, you can finish tightening the bolts.
I've watched a few of your subfloor builds and I've noticed you guys basically just slap stuff together without any precision. I'm not a boat guy, but I was an aviation sheetmetal man and I'm amazed at your lack of basic sheetmetal craftsmanship. Even this transom repair was also slapped together in the video as if you just want to fix it temporarily. I'm not trying to be harsh, but I don't understand why you promote shoddy buildups and repairs.

Agreeed and you don’t need that foam unless you plan to sink.
currently re doing mine. looks like yours came apart really easy. now i gotta figure out how to jam my wood in the back.

I used a 2x12 treated for mine ,I did have to plane the thickness down about 1/4 inch
Is it because of the chemicals in the treated wood will it deteriorate the aluminum?

Can you resin coat regular plywood or is that still a no no?
Are you using stainless steel nuts and bolts? Won't they interact with the aluminum and cause serious corrosion?
If it sits below the water line in excess, yes. Otherwise if you primer and paint it
What saw is that you are using?
Do you guys have aluminum DIY kit setups for aluminum sea Kings?

Been watching your videos for a while now, trying to figure out to do it all...🤯
Would using a nylon washer against the boat with 5200 do just fine??
@@TinyBoatNation so you would rather do just stainless bolt and washer with 5200 then correct. Thanks a lot for the reply
Hey man do you get paid to do this for people? If so how do I contact you?
Why not use pressure treated?
New sub, great content keep up the awesome work
I'd like to see 1 of these builds done with Coosa instead of plywood
Wouldn't it be better to replace the transem with aluminum. Rather then plywood

Need to check out US Composites for that foam. Seems like you're paying a premium with Total Boat at $400 for that amount of foam.
Let me know if it comes out cheaper for you.

Three quarter !!! Lol
$400 of foam 😰
Ex specialty? That no a word. Do you mean especially. See no x. Practice saying with out an x.
Do you not need to use some sort of sealant where the bolts go through the transom
