Based on the beloved Roald Dahl tale, this comedic and fantastical film follows young Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) and his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly) as they join a small group of contest winners who get to tour the magical and mysterious factory of eccentric candy maker Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp). Aided by his diminutive Oompa Loompa workers (Deep Roy), Wonka has a hidden motivation for the tour, one that he will reveal only after the children in the group show their true colors.

Regardless if you find this Wonka off putting, this is actually more realistic considering he now has a back story. When you lock yourself away for 15 years, not to mention never getting closure on what happened between him and his dad, which made him bitter and misanthropic, this is actually close to what would come out of it.

  • @videohistory722
    @videohistory722 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +67

Burton was completely against using CGI if he could help it, and this is another example. All the squirrels you see? They're real. In fact, they're rescue squirrels that Burton specifically hired someone to train them to do all these scenes. He even named them.
If you really want specifics, the real ones are whenever you get a close up of one, when they first attack Veruca's stunt double, and when that one squirrel pushes the dad in after her.
Also, apparently this is supposed to be ironic. She exploited nut workers to get what she wanted in the beginning, tried to do the same thing here, and it backfired.

Cinematography note here: the further they get inside the factory, the colors drain away. Do with that what you will. It's not just Wonka that's getting washed out, the factory is too.
He just made a huge technological invention, and there's no joy in it other than for advertising candy.

The bucket house is actually the reason the movie got the green light from Roald Dahl's widow. Why? It's based off of Dahl's famous writing shed. It's common knowledge that Dahl hated the original, so naturally she was protective of any future adaptations. But when she saw the house, and found out they'd designed the Bucket house like that on purpose? That sold the deal for her.

Arguably my favorite film adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It has more faithfulness to the original book, melting wax puppets with one's eye plopping off, a wild rapid boat ride, squirrels on Veruca Salt, an intense rock fueled Mike Teavee song and Deep Roy as a tribe of Oompa Loompas. The kinds of things not found in the Gene Wilder classic.

That's right, even after saying no, Charlie still hesitated. Yes, even though he wants away from his life of poverty, he still said no. He knows he's giving up the chance of a lifetime, and he really doesn't want to give it up.
But he still does because he's so close with his family.
Basically what I'm saying is because Wonka had no support system, he's now walking away empty handed.

My niece was addicted to this film. The DVD extras included dance instructions for the Oompa dances and I had to learn every move you saw in this film for her. So there is a certain nostalgia for this one in my heart.
I was a fan of the novel when I was little myself. It wasn't a requirement but I had read it from the school library. I remember liking it and the very imaginary world in it. I wasn't that close with the first film other than enjoying Gene Wilder. As a result though I never had a purist stance on any of the film versions. Their all respective adaptions and works to me though I think I almost have that sort of view about things.

0:30 - I was in 2nd grade (2005-2006, 7 years old) when this movie came out, and because the movie was coming out then, we read the book. I was ~7 when I saw the original.
2:24 - The Wonka bars I remember were somewhere between the size of a Crunch bar and a Hershey bar, and were just chocolate that said "Wonka" on it. My Dad took the little piece of cardboard paper from a Hosties cake, made it look like a golden ticket, and I still have it.

I forgive Grandpa Joe for staying in bed all of these years in this film because he seems much more excited about Charlie’s factory experience and wants to make sure he has a good time since it might be the only lucky chance he gets. However, in the Willy Wonka version, that Grandpa Joe LITERALLY sings a whole song about how HIS luck has changed (“I’VE got a golden ticket!”), making his rise from bed seem much more selfish.

I like the first one better.
Even though this one stays more true to the original book I love Gene Wilder's performance.
Gene Wilder's performance in the first one was simply awesome , memorable !

All the lyrics for the songs in the movie are lifted directly from the book, unlike the "original" movie. I prefer this one to the first adaptation personally, but I am a Tim Burton fan.

I didn't see the first neither but apparently Roald Dahl himself hated it

When you see Tim's Wonka, you might see original Charlie Bucket (Dr. Peter Ostrum) because he made possible cameo in this movie.
His career was different after Peter declined offer from studio continue on acting. He is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Oh yeah and the Oompa’s songs in this film are fire. Yeah I like it. Not better than the original, but this was has the perfect new tone they wanted.

Fierce Creatures was favorite movie of mine. It stars John Cleese, Kevin Kline and Jamie Lee Curtis. You'll get more than a few laughs from it.

When comparing the Depp version to the Wilder version, remember that the Wilder film was done with practical effects, minitures and actual sets not CGI. The Depp version is closer to the original book and is much darker than the Wilder version.

6:23 I love this moment, cause' aunt Georgina always seams so out of place, so when she says something inspiring, no matter how small or simple it is, it hits SO MUCH HARDER and makes her seem so much wiser

I'm not 100% sure but I think it has something to do with where Cotton Candy actually comes from?

I grew up w both movies and loved them both! And I still love both to this day.
But if I’m being honest, as I’ve gotten older, I’m starting to like watching Burton’s film more than the original.
And I love the songs!!! I often play them in my car when driving to work 😂

28:34 idk why Willy wonka felt nervous about the lambs, but I’m guessing that he uses them to make cotton candy
