Quick anecdote from an engine book I've got. From an interview of a BMW F1 race team engine builder, they would go out to wrecking yards to find old clapped out sedans with the highest mileage they could find and pull the M10 blocks for cores. The thinking was that these engines with tons and tons of hours on the clock would have all the casting stresses out of them and would hold up to grenade-spec boost the best. Seeing as these cars were laying down 900 to 1500 horsepower with factory stock iron blocks and NOT blowing up they might have been on to something.
@@deltas4764 Its just called "Legendary Car Engines" by John Simister. Printed by Motorbooks. Great video. We still occasionally see E30 M3 track cars come through the shop with built 2.5 liter Evo engines and aftermarket engine management (to eliminate that horrible airflow meter from the stock setup) and they easily produce 275+ whp using race gas on the chassis dyno. That's incredibly impressive for an engine design whose genesis was nearly 40 years ago. Fully agree with naming this engine one of the all time greats.

"Turbos in toasters", I just laughed and laughed at that line. I've secretly always wanted to put a turbo on a lawnmower engine. I need help... But I think I'm in good company. Love your vids!!!
It's a bit hard to make it work because the engine is too small and you just can't find a small enough turbo to make it work. Nitro on the other hand....

Very sad we didn't get this M3 in South Africa. We had to create our own homologation special, the 325is, with the Alpina 2.7 M20 engine. This was to compete against the South Africa only Opel Kadett Superboss with the Delta modified C20XE, stock with Getrag LSD gearbox amongst other thing. Also interesting is that South Africa also made a 333i with the M30 engine also helped build by Alpina. We also made the Opel Kadett 200ts with a C20LET and 6 sped LSD Getrag which debuted with 160kw (215hp) in 1994.
You can remove the flap MAF with a heated wire MAF. There is a product called a "MAF translator" which interprets data from a new heated wire sensor, then sends data to the ECU that is exactly like the flap MAF. Some call the OEM sensor a "VAF." It is good for a few horsepower by itself. I think some people mod their Datsun 280ZXT to accept a 300ZXT heated wire MAF for example. 23:14 There is another way. Have you heard of offset grinding? By grinding the crank throws off center and then welding them up, you can lengthen the stroke by a few millimeters. 29:00 Plus, with 10:5:1 or more of compression, you couldn't run much boost anyway. It would probably be required to buy lower compression pistons.
I have always said the thing that turns me on most about 80's and 90's cars is homologation, cars that were designed with racing in mind and offered to the public, I mean as a born petrolhead what more could you possibly ask for?

Having driven a tuned s14 (I admit I didn't go over 7000rpm, I am to afraid of breaking something), I wouldn't want to own one. The car is amazing, but there is no point in having one if you don't rev it to moon, which with an engine worth 3 years of rent I wouldn't want to do to often. On top of that, the s14 is 3 times as much as an s54, imagine how much more fun you would have with an s54, knowing you have 2 more ready to drop in when you throw a rod!
I have only had BMW E34 M5 3.8 with S38B38 engine. Stock power 340 hp and 400 nm torque naturally aspirated. It’s similar type motor as S14 just six cylinder inline with larger 50 mm ITB’s and larger valves and 90 mm stroke. It would be great if you could do a video of M88 / S38 type engines. M1 race cars had naturally aspirated six cylinder 3.5 liter motor versions with around 470-490 hp power output at very high rpm for inline six at that time.
One small correction, it was the S88 engine in the M1, and M635csi. Unfortunately, my own M635csi needs an Electromotive system because the OE one has injector pulse issue we cannot figure out how to rectify. Other than that, your videos are excellent, certainly among the best, if not very best l've been fortunate to find on YT. As a former BMW mechanic and an instructor in a different field, l cannot praise them enough. Your English is also better than many native born Americans, and in these videos, perfect.
A side note about the M12 Formula 1 engine...BMW motorsport took the raw/basic blocks and left them outside to age/cure them..( before assembly of all the components )..It was found that exposure to the elements actually made the blocks harder...
Im dead serious, they feel like they have less power down low then my gf's 1.6 60hp vauxhall, but i love the way the power rolls in and the sounds are insane.
The people that complain about these things being too slow and not fun are the same people that complain about the S2000 being slow. You take something tuned 100% for the high end and drive it like a tractor and it's going to be slow. If you don't hit limiter at least sometimes you aren't going hard enough.
I owned an E30 M3. I can confirm, anyone who thinks they would love to drive one will be very disappointed. I never took it on the track so can't comment on that.
The S14 I forgot to adk for, only had the M42 engine in a E30, was fun to drive even with low power, the engine liked the revs and the gearbox was great. So I want to ask, please bring a video of the M42/M44 maybe compare and as always wanted to see the Ford Duratec, the 1.7 Zetec S and the OHC Pinto ✌ Nice video PS: Your german is really ok 👍

M42 is a wonderful engine, currently building a turbo m42 for my e30 with around 300hp on all stock internals. There's plenty of mods for these motors and they have a ton of untapped potential from my own findings and many others.
Please please my friend...do one video explanation on about alfa romeo 4 and v6 cylinders ever famous in the story of the motorsport. You really can’t forget of those great engines. We all counting on you for this video. Ciao
Hi, love your videos, I have owned one of these cars many years ago, I would love it if you did the Nissan vg30t engine single cam ... I had one of these in the late 80s it was in a z31 and was a factory turbo Nissan fairlady ... in the late 80s we modified it and was proving 450ho at the wheels and was for a long time one of the fastest street cars in New Zealand. Cheers Pieter
m30 engine is such a fun motor to boost. It has all the pros of the m10 but with two extra cylinders and the benefit of being plentiful and in the full range of BMWs from the 80s.
Would love to build this engine and turbo it as a replacement for my fa20, ITBs make such a difference especially with a naturally higher reving engine
Just throwing it out there again, VW G40/60, or the VW AFH not the best nor most iconic but imo often overlooked, a neat 1.4/1.6 16v that can do pretty much 4AGE things :)
your german pronounciation made me chuckle. sounds good though. great video series. this and the video about snap oversteer are the reason why i subbed your channel
Have you done anything on the first V8 BMW M5 engine the S62? I once had a 2002 M5 and what I did to spruce it up was re-flash the ECM, eliminate the screen and plastic grating inside the Mass Air Sensors as per Dinan's advice coupled with K&N air filters and install a stainless steel Borla Catback exhaust because BMW for some crazy reason crushed the exhaust pipes down to 50% in diameter right in front of the differential increasing the backpressure. I suspected they put these band aids on the car to limit the horsepower to 400 hp. I also replaced the dual mass flywheel with an aluminum 13.5 lb. flywheel and Kevlar high performance clutch. The engine revved like an air tool when I did that. With all of the resulting increase in power and response I had to send the pressure plate out to maximize the clamping force because it would slip under hard acceleration. The clutch and pressure plate is was a flaw in my opinion of the E39 M5. I also ran into issues with the differential as I had ripped the anemic brackets off that held the differential to the frame and had to reinforce the brackets, another flaw of the E39. All the fun occurred however when you pressed the DSC button disabling the traction control, the car would be all over the road in the first 3 gears. It was truly a sleeper if you didn't know what an M5 was.
I want to see a race between a track ready 1991 442 and a E30 M3 Evo1. They would be about the same weight, if the 442 were track prepped. Both, 2.3L Inline-4s with similar output. (S14 having the advantage, unless the W41 was slightly modified). They weren't at all competitors, but they're both unique in their own way. Moreover, a race between them would be equally unique and cool to see how the differnt approaches would compare on the track.
I think there is a way to get some High flow cats and some high flow mufflers and do a duel x pie side exit exhaust. I got a welder and some stainless steel pipes so I can fab it up. Plus it will look cool and probably have a better less annoying good flowing exhaust note with some good back pressure.
Yes bmw finally 🤣 put the n52 familly on here its the most reliable motor ever on an bmw with only oil change every 10k km an serie 3 with the naturally aspired n52 serie if it is the b20 b25 b30 other sayed an 2 2.5 or 3 liters it mades in normaly condition with mentioned befor just oil changes and yeah brake pads but for the rest my dear friend never did nothing his 330 e46 has now 778675 km and it still drives him everyday to work it has no issues no power lost and that car still love it when good warm that u floor it to 7k rpm in every gear that car never failed its so unbelievable can u might do a vid on how bmw managed to create such a motor idlying at 500 rpm or 600rpm with an normal temparature between 100 and 120 c degrees without failling that really awesome
We have both M88/3 and a S14B25 (330HP but only for racing) as well as E21 with a turbocharged S14B23. I totally admit that turbocharging the engine wasn't a good idea but we needed more power to stay compatible against a 550 hp ford and a 2010 cup Porsche at hill climb races.
Fantastic video. I can't get over your knowledge of the S14 and engines in general. Keep up the good work, but I think I'll keep my S85 where it is for the moment.
Also, as my other love (and yours) is MR2 mark 1, how about a comparo with the 20 valve 4AGE? Hi rpm, 100 HP/ liter, NA.... No worries. Love the channel.
So true about people being disappointed by their dream car because they don't understand it and can't drive it properly. S85 has similar problem. I saw so much hate for it: it is bad at lows, it is overcomplicated, it is hard to maintain, BMW could go with supercharger or turbo to get same power or even more, etc. All that just shows that people don't make their homework and simply not ready to own cars like E60 M5 & E63 M6, yet they claim that BMW is a bad car manufacture after that and their Corolla is much better... Really sad story.

As a german i have to say your rap was really good. Keep it up man!
this series has been awesome. love all the techs and specs
Great channel and thanks for sharing. I’ve always loved the E30 M3
Im dead serious, they feel like they have less power down low then my gf's 1.6 60hp vauxhall, but i love the way the power rolls in and the sounds are insane.
its a +200hp 4syl from 80´s its a engine that needs to be revd, what did u expect?
Would love to see a video with the m54
I love how you switch on changing "accents" when speaking
The people that complain about these things being too slow and not fun are the same people that complain about the S2000 being slow.
You take something tuned 100% for the high end and drive it like a tractor and it's going to be slow. If you don't hit limiter at least sometimes you aren't going hard enough.
You’re a master bar none, best content!
I love this channel and I'm not even into cars!
I owned an E30 M3. I can confirm, anyone who thinks they would love to drive one will be very disappointed. I never took it on the track so can't comment on that.
Hey, your german sounds very good ❣️👌🏼
Love greeting from Berlin 😋
Great review. I would argue the Honda K/F/B series engines are better, but the s14 is no doubt a legend.
The S14 I forgot to adk for, only had the M42 engine in a E30, was fun to drive even with low power, the engine liked the revs and the gearbox was great.
So I want to ask, please bring a video of the M42/M44 maybe compare and as always wanted to see the Ford Duratec, the 1.7 Zetec S and the OHC Pinto ✌
Nice video
PS: Your german is really ok 👍
The M42, Race Engine was the S42
M42 stroker builds
Crankshaft from m44(1.9l) or m47 a little more involved process and this link will show some of the similarities in other parts
the325is.blogspot.com/2011/12/bmw-m44-engine-to-create-bmw-s42-euro.html
More mods for lightening up the m42
grassrootsmotorsports.com/project-cars/1991-bmw-318is/project-bmw-318is-lightening-engine/
M42 is a wonderful engine, currently building a turbo m42 for my e30 with around 300hp on all stock internals. There's plenty of mods for these motors and they have a ton of untapped potential from my own findings and many others.
The good old days of race on Sunday, buy on Monday.
Very comprehensive video, thanks for doing this great work. Please consider doing the VQ37VHR
Please please my friend...do one video explanation on about alfa romeo 4 and v6 cylinders ever famous in the story of the motorsport. You really can’t forget of those great engines. We all counting on you for this video. Ciao
I love this series! More bike vids as well please :D
I'd love it if you did one of these on the BMW M57's. Gotta get some diesels in here!
Yea i was waiting for RICO's "Rock me Amadeus" to start playing in the background.
You should review a BMW E30! Great cars🏎
A Turbo on an s14 its a shame. This engine lifes from high rev an the Sound he made at it
Would love to build this engine and turbo it as a replacement for my fa20, ITBs make such a difference especially with a naturally higher reving engine
I think the M10 was the first Formula1 turbocharged world champion! pretty iconic...
Nice! Mine s14 turbo engine as Pic in the movie, the purple turbo one.
Performance bmw cover car?
@@n.c4831 yes also!
Just throwing it out there again, VW G40/60, or the VW AFH not the best nor most iconic but imo often overlooked, a neat 1.4/1.6 16v that can do pretty much 4AGE things :)
Need to do the M3 S50B30/32 Euro or Nissan Fj20et. Great video mate
Both of those will be covered soon! Stay tuned. Thanks for watching :)
your german pronounciation made me chuckle. sounds good though. great video series. this and the video about snap oversteer are the reason why i subbed your channel
Awesome content man 🔥💪
nice video, deserves more vieuws!
Excellent explanation at 19:30, it's drivers car. :)
The s14 also powered the 320is. With lower displacement 2L instead of 2.3 or 2.5 like the m3's
The video we all wanted and needed! And by “all” I mean the people who desperately want the e30 m3 but probably never be able to afford…😅 me😂
I think the list of people who are unable to afford them nowadays includes almost everyone 😁 they're crazy expensive now.
I've got two e30's one has a m52b28tu and the other has a Euro m3 engine turbo
Did you swap it yourself? I’m currently swapping an M52TUB25 into my E30 estate! I’d love to pick your brain about the build
That rap was sick, sick I tell ya
Can you do one on the S54?
I think there is a way to get some High flow cats and some high flow mufflers and do a duel x pie side exit exhaust.
I got a welder and some stainless steel pipes so I can fab it up.
Plus it will look cool and probably have a better less annoying good flowing exhaust note with some good back pressure.
You should do one on the BMW boxer produced from '69-'94. Or how about the M-B OM617?
I want to see someone swap a bmw s14 into a nissan s14
How about an episode about opel CIH engines?
We have both M88/3 and a S14B25 (330HP but only for racing) as well as E21 with a turbocharged S14B23. I totally admit that turbocharging the engine wasn't a good idea but we needed more power to stay compatible against a 550 hp ford and a 2010 cup Porsche at hill climb races.
th-cam.com/video/IEuXOgQQQJw/w-d-xo.html
Fantastic video. I can't get over your knowledge of the S14 and engines in general. Keep up the good work, but I think I'll keep my S85 where it is for the moment.
Also, as my other love (and yours) is MR2 mark 1, how about a comparo with the 20 valve 4AGE? Hi rpm, 100 HP/ liter, NA....
No worries. Love the channel.
love that Mercedes S190 Cosworth @3:40 😭😭
So true about people being disappointed by their dream car because they don't understand it and can't drive it properly. S85 has similar problem. I saw so much hate for it: it is bad at lows, it is overcomplicated, it is hard to maintain, BMW could go with supercharger or turbo to get same power or even more, etc. All that just shows that people don't make their homework and simply not ready to own cars like E60 M5 & E63 M6, yet they claim that BMW is a bad car manufacture after that and their Corolla is much better... Really sad story.
