Tim is just being humble, and he really knows it's his guitar playing on Runaway that was the catalyst for everything Bon Jovi, right? When the A&R guys (and gals) listened to Runaway for the first time, they must have lost their minds because it was Pop enough for 80s radio (keys, harmonies, and a memorable hook), but it was also a Rocker with real guitar licks and a melodic solo you want to rewind to hear again. Tim is a subtle genius.

    @monkeyfinger7949 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

In my humble opinion, Tim's solo on Little Runaway is one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. I found out about Tim because I had to know who played that ripping solo. You deserve the hall of fame for that one Tim. I listen to it over and over and am in awe of the rock chops of that dude. That solo completely made that song jump out of the radio IMO. Jon's no slouch here either. The whole band was smoking hot on that session.

I have been playing for 20 odd years and have never heard this song until a month ago. At first the solo didn't stick with me because it's out of my framework of how I would have played it. Now I can't get it out of my head and have been rewinding about 50 times per day and watching lessons. Almost there. It is a great solo

Dude. You gotta be kidding. I was never a fan of Sambora’s guitar playing or of Bon Jovi but always thought is was weird that I always considered the solo from Runaway a perfect guitar solo that randomly plays in my head on occasion... no lie.
I feel so much better (and a little freaked out) that it was YOU!
    Makes so much sense now.
I don’t feel so bad loving that solo anymore!

God that's funny. I'm not trying to trash anyone or be a hater, but I was never a huge Bon Jovi or Richie Sambora fan. But I really liked the song Runaway and thought the guitar playing, both rhythm and lead, were amazing. I used to wonder why Richie didn't play that way on anything else. Well holy smokes, I never knew that wasn't Ritchie. The solo on song is so within Ritchies "STORYTELLING" style of playing. Something I've always admired about his work , it's not just rambling licks but a beginning, middle and end or story if you will. Very cool Tim, FYI this was a solo I worked on a lot in my days with my first band. Well done sir, it's beautifully done.

This brings back an old memory. Back in the early 80's I had bought the white anniversary Marshall. I took the head to be serviced. I think it was a shop on Ventura Blvd. Anyway, the tech had told me he also worked on the amps for Rick Springfields guitarist, a guy named Tim. I really enjoyed having Steve Stine interview you - he's is a fantastic educator as well, and makes you feel so comfortable while learning. The solo on "Please Come Home for Christmas" - WOW! I love that style of blues, and your solo was so soulful! It reminded me of another soulful blues guitar player, Glenn Kaiser, playing "Through the Night" on Spontaneous Combustion, released in 1994, two years after "Please Come Home for Christmas". Wow! I listened to these two songs a few times, heard the differences, but it's the so similar soulful vibe that came through. Thanks again, Tim!

You launched the band Bon Jovi with song. Without it getting airplay the band wouldn't have been formed. Before I found this video I noticed the guitar part writing is distinctively more interesting than their other hits. I love how you talk theory and concepts towards composing it as opposed other tutorials just walking you through a sequence of notes. Amazing.

What I love about your videos is that you make music human. We all consume so much music, talk about it, kids judge each other because of it, etc. But many people rarely think about the countless hours of practice and experience by people that go into so many of these songs that they judge after listening to them once. Often at great personal risk and with laser focus, as you say.

Tim, oddly enough when I was working on a gig with TOTO a while back I was indeed talking to 'Luke' (Steve) back stage. When you say you've always love his playing (as we all so do) it was really fascinating to hear him talk about the players he himself admired.
At the time he'd asked me to pass on his best to a number of friends he and I have in common here in Australia, all well known guitarists.
(Btw, were you aware that Phil Emmanuel - also a dear dear friend of mine, and of course Luke's - Tommy's brother died recently? I still can't believe he's gone).
But I had no idea you were on those Bon Jovi songs or in the Springfield band. You continue to blow me away, every single time.
I suspect you and I probably have industry acquaintances/friends in common.
Thank you for all that you do. The music world would have been a lot poorer without you. ;-)
I'd love to have you workshop tour some of my venues here in Australia some time.

Fascinating discussion - thanks so much Tim and Steve. As is so often the case, the great players are down-to-earth, friendly and humble, and not afraid to make fun of their own 'mistakes'.

I keep watching videos where Tim shares stories about the different artists he's done guitars for. I continue to be amazed at who he's worked with. Love hearing the inside stories.

I am blown away. I thought that lead was Richie. I just learned that lead for the band last year. Unbelievable. Great lead Tim.

PSHHHOOOOW! LOL...Mind blown! I had no Idea this was you on that track! Its a definite standout solo for Jovi and that song rocked our teenage heads off! NICE work, Tim! BTW it was a pleasure meeting you as I rounded the corner at namm in 2016.

One of best rock solos EVER!!!! What guitarist doesn’t love this one? 👍🎸🤙 Interestingly the slickness always did remind me of Lukather. Like Luke & Carlton Tim seems to improvise like they’ve worked on the piece for months! lol 😂

When I came across this video, I though to myself, "Holy Shit! This is the guy that played the run-away solo!". That is my favorite guys solo of all time. Absolutley perfect. Thanks for a great video and a great guitar solo I've enjoyed everytime I've heard it for the last 40 years!

Really awesome solo, Mr. P. One of my favorites, along with 'Love Somebody' and that smokin' solo you laid down at the end of Dweezil Zappa's cover of 'Stayin' Alive.' That one was awesome- after Dweezil, Zakk Wylde, Steve Lukather, Warren DeMartini, and Nuno Bettencourt, here comes Tim with a corker of a solo, one for the books. No wonder yours was the final solo- who would've wanted to follow that, even among those guys?!

Thank you for this. Learning the solo from the man who did the solo - taught thoughtfully.

Best Bon Jovi song ever and my favorite solo from that outfit. Funny, I’ve always thought no way Ritchie Sambora came up with that solo, so cool that it was you! By the way not slamming Ritchie.
