As a nissan enthusiast I own 2 of those L31 Nissan Altima SE-R (special editions) I know all about those cars the positive battery terminal is a fusible link, check there first before you dive into the alternator a BITCH to do on those cars, if the transmission is stuck in 5th gear it is the camshaft position sensor is a issue it will put it into a limp mode that does not have a CVT it is a 5 speed RE5F22A the valve body might needs to be cleaned it's a relatively simple job and the valve body is $175 new shipped you will get your money back for it

That Altima doesn’t have a CVT; when you put it in tiptronic mode, it said it was in 5th gear. It’s likely in a limp mode.

I would put an Alternator on it. And the transmission might shift properly. Nissans are pretty picky and with it being fly by wire, it's probably not working right because the charging system is dead.

The reason for the lights and the way it's running is because of the charging system. Everything is electronic it needs 14 to operate correctly. I seen it on a Chrysler Aspen it wouldn't move hardly at all until I changed the battery it wasn't holding a charge period even with new alternator

Any 17 year old car you find a auction: The seller when traded it in knew it was worthless, that is why they accepted the minimal amount in trade.
The dealer's techs (who get first dibs on these cars for almost nothing as a perk of employment) went over it, if they pass, it was not worth fixing.
Then it goes to auction, and that is what you got.

The VQ35 will use oil like crazy. Great motors if you can keep oil in them. CVTs are CVTs. Keep the fluid changed and replace the trans filter every once in a while and don’t beat on them. They aren’t too bad.

@@gopats85 my wife drove an 06 Murano for many years. I got it with 67k miles and traded it in last year with 235k miles. The week I got it I drained and filled the trans. Always used Valvoline CVT fluid. Changed it every 30-40k miles and replaced the filter twice. As far as I know, it had the original transmission in it when I traded it.
Like I said above, the VQ35 uses massive amounts of oil past about 140k miles. From what a tech told us, the piston rings Nissan used wore prematurely. Don’t know how true that is. From what I’ve seen at least on the Murano pages, the reliability of the CVT hasn’t improved. But who knows how they were serviced.

cvt is what my scooter also uses, in bigger cars it is metal to metal wherease in scooters it is almost always metal (from vario & centrifugal clutch) to rubber (belt). it is basically a system where you have two pulleys that are adjustable in diameter.
the vario makes the gap between the end of crankshaft and vario itself smaller when the engine spins faster (because there are weights in the vario self or the vario is electronically adjusted which forces the vario to move outwards) this means that the belt moves outwards resulting in a larger diameter (because it cant go anywhere else).
Because the belt now needs more room at the front the belt wants to make the gap from the outgoing shaft larger (smaller diameter). There is a spring in the rear shaft which pushes onto the belt forcing it to the outside (larger diameter), but when the engine spins faster and the front wants more belt, the belt forces the spring to contract making it a smaller diameter.
This was my attempt to make the cvt understandable idk if I said everything correctly, because recently learned about it. I hope it was usefull!

That car is in limp home mode. My 2011 altima did the same thing. Unplug the battery and try again. It might be the MAF or the throttle body or the cam shaft. Maybe they were checking the fuel pump since the carpet was not put back.

No CVT in this car. 5 speed auto I believe,

This is the first time I agree with you. Send this one back. The CVT issue alone totals it twice if not three times.

Randy, I'm pretty sure the battery light has something to do with the transmission, so shange the alternator if it fixs the problem all good if not then check the transmission fluid

Randy since you like buying these older car’s maybe consider making a trip to Michigan with them on a trailer? We have something called the Woodward dream cruise in Detroit and surrounding communities some people don’t drive their car’s at all they just park them for show and to sell thousands of people come from all over the country for the event the 2022 event is Friday and Saturday this coming weekend with the main event day being Saturday

you did a right thing by selling it right back to copart. she needs a lot of tlc. for me i would just put a new trans in it, she not worth it but it cvt one.

I think you should fix the charging problem first. Because my murano has the same 3.5 motor and when I had alternator problems the whole car will go into limp mode. Good luck changing that alternator. It took me 3 long hours to change because its in atight spot where the radiator, fans had to come out

I think the carburetor needs a good cleaning. One of the jets is probably clogged. And check the blinker fluid while you're there, the reservoir is right under the carb bowl.

I remember back in the Mid-90s we were driving a 87 Dodge Caravan, we always had to smack the alternator with the car club to make a charge.
I see what looks to be a, 4-Cylinder Camaro in the background, first car for Nick maybe.

The transmission being finicky could be because of the alternator I’d replace it and see what it does

I have a 2005 nissan primera with 20k ish miles yeah you heard it right the car is brand new. It's been on the family since it had 6 kilometers on the clock so i know it hasn't been abused at all and I've had harsh shifting when i had the battery a bit loose. It stays parked for long time periods and the worse time it did the shifting thing it was when the connector disconnected. Even the cvt light turned on on the dash so I'd check the charging system before dooming it

CVT didn’t come until 07. I’ve had bad cam sensors in those cars and it wont shift right. It’s in limp mode.

The 2005 Altimas are a regular Automatic transmission, which makes their own transmission called Jatco. 2007 and up that's when Nissan put CVT's in their newer and updated Altimas.

Should be a 4 speed auto in that Randy… not a CVT. But the 05 Maxima was one of the worst years because of trans issues. The V6 Altima likely has the same one.

It's a regular automatic Randy and that issue could be a solenoid valve stuck/damaged
