Here's a fun fact: The line Ken Watanabe said to Godzilla was supposed to be said in English, but when he decided to say it Japanese, everyone loved it.
The behind the scenes on the Blu-Ray version are so surprisingly inspiring. You can definitely see the genuine love and passion the director has for Godzilla.

It has probably my favorite score of the year. McCreary absolutely knocked it out of the park. And it's even more impressive that he did this, while consistently utilizing a set of themes that are ~60 years old! He just somehow updated them all to sound new again.
@@jasonblalock4429 What do you expect? This is the same man responsible for the soundtrack in God of War. GOD. OF. WAR! So I expected nothing less from him as the main theme of the game "Overture" is absolutely stellar and Godzilla: KOTM is no exception.
Someone: Godzilla running is unrealistic. Me: Dude, Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah are capable of flying despite the fact that something so huge and heavy will be unable to even separate himself from the floor.
Buddhist monk chants were actually for Ghidorah. It’s the Heart Sutra. To ward off evil. And I swear I cried in the theater and I cried watching it again. The sequence of Mothra coming out of the waterfall is THE master clip of the Monsterverse. Everything else could be subject to criticism. Not that. Bear McCreary’s updated score, the visuals, the pacing. It’s perfection.
Honestly, Mothra kind of stole this whole thing for me. Somehow they managed to balance fearsome, realistic insect monster with truly breathtaking beauty. Her design is just so unique, so gorgeous and she has so much personality. How they managed to make an insect face so expressive and lovely I don't know. I just want to see more of her.
keep *everything* crossed for a Mothra solo movie that introduces Battra and has the twins Zhang Zhi plays as lead characters his design in the Monsterverse should be particularly interesting - aesthetically he was always the "edgier" and fierce looking one compared to Mothra now that SHE has some edge to her (but no less beauty) I'm curious what direction they'd take Battra
Pretty much the same: Mothra and Rodan were always my favorites in the original movies, so to see both reimagined/updated and on the big screen was amazing. I got teary eyed almost every time Mothra was on screen. And the fact that they snuck in her song but also bits of her original sounds was so nostalgic but also so new and beautiful. Watching my two favs fight at the end was also pretty spectacular, even if Rodan was usually a good guy it was cool seeing the tag team monster showdown. I really do hope they bring Mothra back more because yes.

It could be both. If they spent five more minutes making characters that are more than blank bland cookie-cutter characters that no one likes, it would be praised by everyone.
@@ephin3242 You're completely right, out of the whole cast I only found 2 characters remotely interesting or entertaining. But if shit characters was the sacrifice needed to get these beautiful locations, monstrous shows of power and an unmatched spectacle, then I'm just fine with that.
So, the line from Serizawa, "Sometimes, in order to heal our wounds, we have to make peace with the demons who created them.", is a throwaway line coming from anyone EXCEPT A JAPANESE MAN. Because they had to make peace with the nation that created the concept of Godzilla. Such a good line, in such the right place.
This, right here, this line was a nod to through-line that runs all the way through the movie, capped off by Godzilla charging into battle against a great ecological threat flanked by US military power. The (to some) radical idea that the same elements of the US and mankind as a whole that created these problems could work to correct them is the idea this movie puts forward, corny villain monologue or not. We CAN do something to help slow human-linked climate change. It will take massive effort, on a Titan-esque scale (heh) and take a fundamental change in how we as humans see our role on Earth, but it CAN be done.
@Trevor Hensley No. He got it from an Omni Viewer video. A really _long_ Omni Viewer video. xD Honestly, I'm pretty sure that was just sarcasm on Serizawa's part.
@@BalthusHomewood Yeah, in their world I kind of agreed with the villains in large part. It all worked out in the end but how could they possibly have known it would? Getting each individual to change their ways is an impossible task, the only realistic way to do that is with a big ass boot, whatever that boot may be. We're not going to bother trying to fix our planet hard enough until irrefutable evidence things are going south happens and it's so stupid that we have to be that stubborn. Even if you don't believe we caused the issues or that they're even happening it's maddening that we're not preparing for the future.
oh absolutely. I couldn't tell you how many times I had a big ol smile whenever a reference, nod, or even just a cool moment showed up during the film. this movie is my fav movie of the year for sure. even over Endgame which while I did quite enjoy it I was a bit fatigued with Marvel movies. plus I like Godzilla/giant monster movies more lol. I have seen godzilla 2014 a few weeks ago, got it from the library The movie itself isn't that great Godzilla himself? Definitely This movie? So much better, a lot more monsters, awesome colors and just really awesome And kong skull island was awesome too
What confuses me about critics liking 2014 more is that KOTM from a character perspective technically had better characters in terms of actually showing development. 2014 has the vast advantage in acting due to an amazing opening performance by Bryan Cranston, and having a generally more serious tone all around, but none of the characters actually did much or experienced much in the way of character development. They didn’t change or learn much to anything from their experiences, and besides Serizawa, they didn’t even have much in terms of static character arcs either. Meanwhile Mark in this movie actually has meaningful development in this movie that gives this movie meaning. He starts with a massive amount of trauma and baggage from Godzilla’s initial rampage, seeing Godzilla as nothing more than a threat, a waiting enemy to be feared. But as the movie progresses, he begins to see Godzilla more and more like he views his animals, learning from talks with Serizawa and Dr. Chen, and actually observing Godzilla, that Godzilla is not explicitly an evil menace. He’s the apex of nature, neither entirely a friend, nor explicitly an enemy of humans. He is an entity to be respected, treated with care, but not to be viewed with complete fear or disdain. As a side note, I love the analogy of Dr.Chen in this movie when she compares western and eastern mythology around dragons. The idea that western mythology often viewed dragons as monsters to be slain and conquered, whereas the east revered them as special spiritual beings, kinda feels like a commentary on the overall perception of godzilla across different audiences across the globe. And it even brings into question the perhaps hubris of many of the hero-centric man vs nature tales that spread in western stories over the centuries. This being a very on the nose environmental movie, it makes me think there was an intention to link such stories to the disregard of nature by many modern civilizations, who like with the analogy of the dragons, saw nature to be conquered rather than revered.
@@kasaibouF29 i don’t really think there were any really effective static story arcs in godzilla 2014 to be honest. Rather than say an emotional position of the characters in godzilla 2014 being challenged and them holding fast, the characters just kinda have stuff happen to them. They’re more witnesses than active characters I found.
@@maureenobrien4968 lol, I want a new movie in this modern godzilla franchise where godzilla has several tons of fish in front of him and he just rejects it. … wait, is THAT why there’s a scene explicitly showing Kong was eating a shitload of fish in godzilla vs kong? Yes watched it on my Xbox and me wanting the movie experience again put the volume at 40 and the scene scared the living shat out of me Edited: I replayed the video the same part scared me again I hate my life
I'm a massive Godzilla fan, but I was not happy with this movie. There were excellent monster scenes, but I hated the humans. I get that they are necessary for most people to identify with the movie, but if I'm being forced to watch them along with the monster parts I at least want them to be well written or campy so they're entertaining.
I'm gonna point out a little detail I came up with; at the end, when Emma sacrifices herself for her family and is mortally wounded by Ghidorah, it calls back to earlier conversation that Chen and Mark had about Eastern Dragons vs. Western Dragons. Mark jokingly asks if Chen has any knowledge of slaying dragons, and she responds that is a western concept. Eastern dragons were benevolent, god-like creatures that brought about redemption. Back to the scene where Emma takes the ORCA away from Ghidorah, she does it to redeem herself from her deeds from the movie. It's a call-back and a merge of both dragon concepts: Ghidorah is a traditionally western, evil dragon that must be slain, but at the end brings about the redemption of a character (with the aptly-named track 'Redemption' playing in the background).
When he pointed out the Loch Ness I remembered that when I read through the Godzilla wiki it said one of his allies was Leviathan, nicknamed Loch Ness monster or Nessie
Problem is critics don't look at this from the perspective of a Godzilla fan. Or even from the perspective of someone who just likes a fun movie. As a Godzilla fan this film was great. Sure I have minor nitpicks in a few places. But I could tell this was made by people who appreciated and respected the source material. Which is about all I ask from a US Godzilla film. Which I felt this film went above and beyond that with it all. Just so many perfect moments for me as a fan. Especially due to the music. I got teary eyed just hearing a lot of it. Watching this made me appreciate some moments a bit more. Like I never caught that you can see the pattern of Mothra wings in Godzilla Nuclear pulse. Even the ending was perfect as someone who loved System of the Down growing up.
This isn’t a problem of critics or fans it’s a problem of misunderstanding, critics don’t care about the opinions of fans because that isn’t their job, it’s to analyse a films positive and negative merits from their own perspective and to share it to allow people who care (particularly film buffs) to make an informed decision about what they watch, a fan will obviously ignore and spout the films praises whereas a critic can give a more broad and overall look. Just enjoy the movie if you enjoyed it and stop obsessing over the thoughts of others, or if you’re gonna maybe try to understand their reasoning and don’t just go with the “they don’t understand it” message
@@wilddagz140 Well my main issue is them not reviewing the film based on the type of film it is. Like yea I understand that they want review it from the POV of a fan. But most all of them didn't even review it from the POV of them seeing a big popcorn monster flick. Most of the reviews I read were coming from people that were reviewing the film like they would The Shawshank Redemption or films similar to that. A lot of the reviews were them bitching about the film having to many Monster Fights and focuses to much on the Monsters. Which is just a dumb thing to bitch about in a Godzilla film. Hell I even went back and read the reviews from the 2014 Godzilla film from the same critics and in those they bitched about the film not having enough monster scenes in them. So these critics don't even know what the hell they wanted out of the film in the first place. All I'm asking for is for them to be consistent. Don't have a problem with one thing only for the next film to do exactly what you were bitching about. Only to then turn around and bitch about that as well.
@@wisewolftony I think the complaints about how much of the film Godzilla is in is particularly valid though, Godzilla films have never really been about Godzilla but more so the symbolism behind him, the original is obviously and well-documented to use Godzilla to emphasise the fear Japan had of atomic annihilation to foreign audiences through this unimaginable monster(etc etc I’ve got to assume someone as passionate about the character as you seem to be knows all this), and then the most recent Japanese film uses him to criticise the Japanese governments responses to disasters such as 2011 tsunami which occurred in Japan, both of these films had a clear and consistent message and where able to balance the character of Godzilla as a threat whilst writing compelling human scenes to engage us further in this threat. The issue comes to this film not really having a good thematic purpose for Godzilla, whether he’s an antagonist or protagonist I think this is a necessity for making a great Godzilla film and by spending so much time on this now pointless character instead of focusing on the messages the film wants to convey, ie a pro-climate activism message. I’m not sure which reviews your referring to and therefore I can’t gauge the relevancy of any of this to those reviews, but my point is there is certainly validity to criticising the amount of time we spend with this character depending on whether or not he fulfils a role, which I don’t think he does in this movie.
@@wilddagz140 that's why someone would go and see Shin Godzilla, not Godzilla fighting another giant monster. It'd be like going to watch a Transformers movie and expecting a great story, it was never about that. It's about watching a CGI extravaganza of giant robots beating the hell out of each other. Likewise with Godzilla. People don't go to watch Godzilla King Of The Monsters or a Godzilla vs movie for a poignant story with a message. They go watch em to see giant monsters beat the hell out of each other. For someone to not understand that is for them to have their heads so far up their own asses that they can't see the big picture. If someone's job is expressing the merits and critiques of movies, then that's a problem they shouldn't have.
@@propheinx2250 I understand that, but there's parts of this movie that really hold back the cgi spectacle. When comparing this film to the one that came out in 2014, people criticise how the movie cuts away from the action frequently, and it's true that this movie definitely has more action, it's just that it too cuts away from the action throughout in service of the human characters that are weaker. In the climax of both films, Godzilla fights the MUTOs and Gidorah, cutting away from both fights to show the human perspective, but in this film instead of offering a perspective that shows the scale of the fight going on in the surroundings, this film puts the drama centre stage and it takes away from the film imo. I doubt that people are saying there are too many monster fights when criticising this film (and if they are then that is pretty dumb), but the human drama that this movie centres around is pretty bad. It's better to rewatch the fights on youtube basically, while at least in the other films the tension and atmosphere built up, or the allegories for war or natural disasters adds to those films as a whole when the climax does happen. Sorry for the long rant but I think it's a non argument when people say that "critics don't like it because there's not enough humans" or not enough plot or whatever, because there are too many humans and the plot is heavily emphasised in the film, and both these things make the big monster fights less enjoyable. Still like the film though, but yeah I never cared for the whole divorce plot.

And that's fine, I'm all for just a fun movie with kaiju any day, regardless of what someone else says about it. And this one was FUN!
Ghidorah's heads: Ichi is middle, and second-most aggressive, usually leading the other 2. Ni is the one to the right of Ichi (from Ichi's perspective) and is the most aggressive. Kevin is the least aggressive. He's the one that got ripped off and regrown. Edit: wrong descriptions
Freddie Freaker actually Ni is the most aggressive he’s like the hype man of the three if you notice back in Antarctica that Boi never took his eyes off him and when they were stuck on the sky scraper he was actually about to square up with Godzilla. Ichi is aggressive it’s just he’s smart about it and tries to tell the other heads what’s up
Not just him - don't forget Kong tearing the Skullcrawler's guts out. When Godzilla gets knocked down by Ghidorah's gravity beams in Antarctica (when Sally Hawkins is trying to help Kyle Chandler get out of the crashed plane), Godzilla uses the roar from the original 1954 film. You can also faintly hear Rodan's classic roar mixed into his new roar when he first steps out of the volcano.

I was finally able to watch this movie during a plane ride last night, and I regret not seeing it in theaters. My headphones clearly could not do this movie's sound design justice.
I loved this movie since it *actually* showed the Titans and them fighting (which were incredibly brilliant) rather than mostly showing the human drama. Also the designs for all the Titans were absolutely amazing, Ghidora's design was especially well done.
I've heard the complaint of "too dark to see anything" from 2014 levelled at this movie and the only scene I can maybe agree with that is Godzilla throwing down with Ghidorah in Antarctica. Otherwise it's clear *enough* to see what's going on....even during the Boston fight there's plenty of lightning and blue cloud-saturation to brighten things up, unlike the first Godzilla where it was just pitch black smoky night. Still want at-least ONE daytime battle with Kong though; his movie ended on one, plus it would be a first for this Godzilla.
Before this movie me: He's pretty cool, maybe I'll look out for a sticker. After this movie me: I need a scale statue of him doing litteraly anything, and it needs the sound bytes or I'll add it myself!
"You don't even consider the wake these things leave when they fly" As someone who grew up with the original Rodan movie, yes, yes I do. As a matter of fact, that was his entire power for most of the franchise. He flies over things and they're destroyed.
Gravestone999 yes and no. It’s been a VERY long time since I’ve seen Rodan’s original movie. From what I recall he was supposed to have been inspired by the Soviet Union if I remember correctly. I am likely wrong, but I remember reading that somewhere.
There were two scenes in the original _Rodan_ movie that I remember to most. The first was when Rodan's presence was revealed and the jet fighter was blasted into two. The second was when the second Rodan took flight and flew over a car, demolishing it (and the driver with it).
Critics have to understand that sometimes people just want giant monster action. I mean does anyone get invested in the characters in John Wick? No, we just love the badass, creative, and scary ways John kills the people who ruined his life.
This isn’t a critics need to understand moment, this is a misunderstanding, of course no one cares about the characters in John wick because they’re not the appeal, the appeal is the action which is made satisfying by the context, without that context there’s no reason to be engaged, Godzilla lacks this necessary context which is why they have to have 10 different characters constantly spout exposition of context we’ve never seen, and that makes the build up to the fights slow and monotonous and the fights themselves lacklustre and non engaging
Yes? I mean he’s no Atticus Finch, but when you watch his dog get murdered, yeah, I absolutely want him to shoot those assholes in the face. It’s not peak character writing but I absolutely do care, which is more than I can say for KOTM.
no one is seeing that there is too much Godzilla, people are saying that human subplot was boring AF. You could cut out 11 character from movie give some of her action to mother and almost nothing would change.
lol I been noticed it. Hell, I'd noticed it when they show the Burning Godzilla Trailer. When I saw it I was like "No way... Are those Mothra's Wings in Big-G's Nuclear Pulse?!" Tho I had to rewatch the trailer a few more times before I confirm it.
I also feel a lot of this movie's story seems to be lost by people mis-reading or not reading into the emotional weight of most of the actions of the story. The bits between Mark and Serizawa appears to be well fleshed out for viewers, but everything else seems to have been lost on the critics (Emma especially, Madison gets to the heart of her actual reasons for doing any of this in the exchange over how this isn't going to bring back or honor their lost family member). When the actions are tied to emotionally-charged decisions, they don't become justifiable, but you can see how the emotions are carried across the story from start to end even when in the midst of what appears to be pure action. Emma's emotions were just a bit more under the surface. And it requires Emma and Mark putting those emotions aside to find and save their daughter. Greater still is the personifying of this ancient conflict that seems to ripple out and continue forever, influencing or creating parallels in the people as well. A lot of people see Godzilla as just "big monster proving himself to be king" when longtime fans feel the weight of numerous films surrounding this. Godzilla LOATHES Ghidorah in a sense, you can read their expressions when they first see other in the arctic, as if an ancient has been reignited. Godzilla gets this literal "You!" look on his face, Ghidorah is exquisitely happy to be awake again and ready to ruin Godzilla's life like he once stole Godzilla's shoes and it was the best moment of his life so he wants to beat Godzilla forever. The fact that, technically, Godzilla can't do it without the humans puts him in place for this arrogance that almost feels undeserved at the end (despite it being too cool for us to deny wanting this win), crowning him a king that'll prove too prideful and dangerous later on. Also, if you do some research about how many shot to shot and referential materials this movie pulls up in paying homage (much like the score) to the old films, it really kinda confirms the weight of these things where Godzilla has his own story and arc with these monsters, that's it's definitely more than just big monsters duking it out (but why not go for just that?) Also, such a thing to see on a big screen if you get a chance. it's incredible.
The biggest piece everyone missed was Emma trying to rationalize her son's death. Her plan was a defense mechanism in which her behavior, thoughts, and feelings were justified. In her mind it made her son's death more tolerable.
Emma's story is also left as an unredeemed ex-villain because, in the end, she didn't get redeemed at all. She only switched sides. Her actions still caused millions of other families to be shattered, other cities destroyed, and her attempt at redemption didn't do anything for that. She made up for releasing the monster by having her actions lead directly to Ghidora's death, but she did not redeem herself of all the death and destruction that happened as a result of her actions, because if she never released Ghidora to begin with, the results would not have occurred. She just died instead of either facing justice and answering to those people whose lives she ruined or helping to repair the aftermath of the events she caused. Pay attention Hollywood, because you seem to not know this: Dying for the cause you were fighting against, sacrificing yourself so the good guy can win, does not redeem you. It does not atone for past sins. You have to work for that.
Well Godzilla had Ghidorah dead to rights in the water outside the Mexican city. Until the military stabbed him in the back with that damn Oxygen Destroyer.
so with ghidoras heads... they all have their own personality, the middle is the balanced one one is playful and curious and the other is evil and sadistic
I hate to break it to you but all of ghidorah is sadistic in one way or another, ghidorah commanded the titans to wipe out humans before godzilla showed up, ghidorah is the only truly evil titan in monsterverse, others either hunt for food or in defense like mutos

That scene moves me to tears every time I watch it. The imagery, the fulfillment of the idea of Legendaryverse Shobijin, the music, the contrast between the harsh dark storms and the beautiful lit up waterfall, it’s honestly my favorite scene in any movie ever. Everything about it is utterly gorgeous and well crafted, delivered at the darkest hour of the movie to produce a literal and figurative ray of hope in the form of a benevolent goddess. The best part is, the novelization of the movie all but states Mothra is every bit the deity we know her to be by putting the credit for resuscitating Madison in the final act squarely on her by way of Madison seeing a vision of Mothra while knocked out. So while on the surface Mothra is just “giant nice bug”, when you dig deeper she is a straight adaptation of her Toho self, only with a different design and missing the laser blasts. She’s not just worshipped as a goddess. She IS a goddess. And that’s beautiful.
Fun fact: I have watched this movie 7 times Also when I saw mothra waking up from the cocoon I had that sudden realization of mothra twins and just squealed and one guy next to me asked “what” and I replied “mothra twins”... it set of a chain of realization, aren’t I a Godzilla nerd lol

The idea that western mythology often viewed dragons as monsters to be slain and conquered, whereas the east
revered them as special spiritual beings, kinda feels like a commentary on the overall perception of godzilla across different audiences across the globe.
So 2014 had mostly static characters while KOTM had a share of dynamic characters. Agreed. And neither types of characters are bad.
@@kasaibouF29 Yes, but ones are better than the others

They’re more witnesses than active characters I found.

It's a call-back and a merge of both dragon concepts: Ghidorah is a traditionally western, evil dragon that must be slain, but at the end brings about the redemption of a character (with the aptly-named track 'Redemption' playing in the background).
this is pretty good
When he pointed out the Loch Ness I remembered that when I read through the Godzilla wiki it said one of his allies was Leviathan, nicknamed Loch Ness monster or Nessie

I don't know about anyone else but I straight up near screamed in delight at the reveal of the twins when I saw this in theaters. I adore Mothra and my first OG Godzilla movie was the one with Ghirdorah, so this made my little fangirl heart happy. My mom and I had been speculating for MONTHS about what or who was going to be in it, and how they would tie in various references. Honestly, I feel this remakes have been wonderful homages to the source material, regardless of what critics say. Someone already mentioned but all repeat, the critics aren't thinking from a Godzilla fans' perspective, which is probably why it's "so low".

Gravestone999 yes and no. It’s been a VERY long time since I’ve seen Rodan’s original movie.
From what I recall he was supposed to have been inspired by the Soviet Union if I remember correctly. I am likely wrong, but I remember reading that somewhere.
TheKyrix82 yep, I watched that film a long time ago, but it was one of my favorites.
There were two scenes in the original _Rodan_ movie that I remember to most.
The first was when Rodan's presence was revealed and the jet fighter was blasted into two.
The second was when the second Rodan took flight and flew over a car, demolishing it (and the driver with it).
Xenriel55 there was that but then there was a scene of BOTH Rodans attacking a city.

Also, if you do some research about how many shot to shot and referential materials this movie pulls up in paying homage (much like the score) to the old films, it really kinda confirms the weight of these things where Godzilla has his own story and arc with these monsters, that's it's definitely more than just big monsters duking it out (but why not go for just that?)
Also, such a thing to see on a big screen if you get a chance. it's incredible.
