- 1) Second biggest plant group in the aracaea family after anthurium as of Jun 2024 there are 621 species.
2) did you there are two types of philodendrons. Climbers and Crawlers and this will deterime need to use a climbing support or not. Climbers like Philodendron heartleaf, brandiaum, Silver Sword, pink or white princess love to climb upwards. These philodendrons climb up trees in their native habitate of the tropical rainforest. The more they climb the bigger the leaves will become. There are different climbing supports like moss pole, soil pole, plank of work, bamboo stick and Coconut coil.
Crawling Philodendrons like to grown down on the ground underneath the canopy of the tropical rainforest. Hence they spread across the ground. Placing a climbing support is not ideal as its not their nature to climb. It's like sticking a pole up the butt, it's not an idea situation. Unless you enjoy it, good on you!
3) Have you ever seen reddish yellow or purplish sticky bumps on the leaves or petioles of your philodendron. That is extrafloral nectarines. This is a sugary type of nectar that is produced by the plant to attract ants. It a beneficial relationship between the plant and ants. The plant provides food and in return the ants will build a nest near the roots of the plant and provide a form of protection.
This is fantastic symbiotic relationship when growing plants outdoors. In the house many of us don't want an ant infestation in the home.
To get ride of the extrafloral nectarines can use a cloth and damp it with water and wipe the nectar off or wash the philodendron in the shower or wash the philodendron with a hose outside.
It's also important to be able to distinish these reddish spots with small round , flat reddish brown spots which are rust spots. Rust Spots is very detrimental to plants as this is a fungal disease and if left untreated. The steps l take to treat rust spots is firstly isolate the plant. use a fungal side like Yates fungal gunn and spray all over the plant. Top of the leaves, bottom of the leaves. Petiole and stem of the plant. Then isolate the philodendron away from other plants to prevent spread. Repeat the treatment each week until you see the rust spots are not spreading and then give one final treatment.

4) Have you noticed your Philodendron crying sometimes. What l mean is that you see liquid droplets forming on the tip of the leaves and drip down.
This is guttation. This occurs when the roots of the philodendron absorbs water in the soil and its pushed up towards the leaves. The excess water can form beads on the leaves or tear like droplets on the tips of the leaves and starts to drip making the plant look like it's crying. Some people think it's from overwatering. Usually it's just a normal process of the plant and usually nothing to worry about. If it's occuring most times after watering maybe reduce the amount of water used to water your philodendron. In the whole it's really nothing to worry about.
5) I found there are fussy and non fussy philodendrons. What l mean is some philodendrons are more hardy types that are more tolerant to low temperatures, low humidity or watering neglect or overwatering love. Do some research about the type of philodendron before purchasing it.
Varities like Philodendron heart, Brasil, Silver Sword, silver cloud or pink princess are so much easier to care for compared to philodendrons like melanchyrums and gigs. These days l like easy care plants as l don't have the time nor cost involved in providing grow lights, heat mats or a greenhouse for fussy philodendrons. If you caring for the harder care philodendrons definitely go for it.
