  • In this video we mow and bale our wholecrop arable silage (barley, oats and peas). This will be rocket fuel for our growing cattle next winter! Very exciting stuff.
    I hope you enjoy it.

Great video James am sure you are glad to see the rain .do you find mowing with a mower conditioner beats off alot of the seed onto the ground when we last made crop silage we mowed with a hay mower and baled direct to avoid this 👍

It does a little bit yeh. I did notice some of the oats had been knocked out and the occasional pod of peas. Having no conditioner on the mower would have been better I think.

Great video! Completely agree with the TB compensation, We have a freshly calve dairy heifer go gave us around 800 for her, A replacement would be 1200+ easy. Very frustrating. Great Video though would love to try some wholecrop round bales for ourselves :)

I’ll let you know how the cattle do on them but they look like really good stuff.
Tb compensation really needs to be looked at, especially with the increased cost of everything. It’s not really cutting it now.

How many bales to the acre did you get please. Good video. Might give the arable silage a try 👍

Great video very knowledgeable. Does your mower have an conditioner?

Thanks! Yeh it’s does. I knocked a few pods off and a bit off the oats out. Ideally it would be better without it I think.

Bad news re the bulls. From what I've heard you never got what an animal was worth even in the past but I agree they deffinatley need to pay what they're worth.
That silage looks some good stuff! How long did you give it to wilt? How many bales did you get off of how many acres?
Nice to see a bit of rain but it's gone and avaporated in no time!

If it’s not one thing it’s another at the minute Robert! It’s made some great silage. We only gave it a few hours to wilt but it was practically 40 degrees. We only got about 3 to the acre but given the field (very heavy) and the the dry it’s been pretty good. Given a different year and a bit more rain I think it would have easily done 12 to 15 bales. They weigh like lead too!

Do you not worry about the stubble piercing the plastic wrapping the wholecrop in the field?

It could happen I guess but that stubble was quite short and soft so it wasn’t too much of a concern.
