I love this video. I watched other booktubers videos about popular books that they won’t read. Their explanations seemed vague to me. However, your explanations and reasonings were so concise, thoughtful, and intriguing. This is exactly why you are my favorite book tuber! I really braced for the absolute worst and I just finished My Dark Vanessa today. First of all, FANTASTIC on audiobook. And for me personally coming from someone that was sexually violated inside of a relationship, this did not get me to my core like I thought it would. And I think its because this was such a nuanced situation that it felt more like a far off character study that was CRAZY interesting and really got me thinking more than it did feeling. I did have a few moments with some tears shed but I can usually ugly cry from books that really move me deeply or personally and I didn’t get that bad, which I consider a good thing like you said with this heavy content.
I’m with you on Red Queen series.

Totally get what you’re saying about Jay Kristoff and the issue with separating the work from the author. Personally, I am now so much more aware of the things I’ve been taught, the things I’ve ignored and the things I’ve been conditioned to believe on a subconcious level and this has made me very wary and careful of which literature I choose to read. Also, considering the amount of authors and books that exist out there, choosing a non-problematic author is really not that hard at all.

I'm surprised no one can tell you what The Starless Sea is about, I thought it was pretty simple. It's about a student who finds an account of his own childhood written in a strange book in his university library, and tries to track down whoever wrote the book and find out why he's in it. It's about ancient underground libraries, storytelling and the nature of stories, and cyclical time.

  • @tarabeck999
    @tarabeck999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I've read The starless sea and I'd say it is a story about stories--the meaning we give to them, the choices we make, and if any of it matters--wrapped up in an adventure tale of traveling deeper and deeper into a magical library. It's not a story with clear edges, and it isn't everyone's cup of tea. But if you ever do change your mind get the audiobook to go along with the physical copy. It's got great voice actors who each take on different sections.
I'm blanking on my "never read" books list but anything that seems to exist to make me feel bad (diet or self help) are good candidates generally.

I doubt this makes sense, but this is where I mentally shelve a lot of stuff you discuss here.

I read The Starless Sea, and although it contains flowery, descriptive writing and beautiful turn of phrase; it is not a book I would recommend. The plot is overdrawn and convoluted. Some of it is a bit gory/graphic needlessly, and the ending is not at all satisfying. I was disappointed.

I am currently reading My Dark Vanessa! It is definitely a hard subject matter to read about.
I read Addie LaRue last year, my first V.E Schwab ever. The writing was very beautiful, but it wasn't a new favourite for me. It was just ok.
It is good to know what your tastes are and what you think you can and cannot handle (and acknowledge that may change with time), and to read books you believe you will enjoy. Not all books are going to be for everyone and there are too many books out there to waste on books you just are not interested in.
I've never read Harry Potter and never had a desire to. And before discovering booktube in 2019 I had never heard of Cassandra Clair and don't have any desire to dive into those books either.

I'm still struggling with Kristoff ... on one hand I have incredible nostalgia for his books because Nevernight was one of the first books to get me back into reading after a 10 year stint of not reading anything for pleasure, on the other I don't want to be supporting authors who are problematic

Hoopla was heavily promoting Girl, Wash Your Face awhile back and the cover and title alone was a no for me and when the bad reviews started coming out I wasn't surprised.
I'm not on Instagram or Twitter so the only time I hear about authors doing bad things is on Booktube. I bought the first two Illuminae books on kindle a couple years ago before I was aware of any of this and a huge part of me doesn't like wasting money. I'll probably eventually read them and delete them off my Kindle forever. The only popular books/ author that I'm not really interested in is Sarah J Maas books. I'm sure there's more but I only keep track of books I want to read and not the ones I don't. There are certain genres that I'm not really a fan of and so every popular book in that genre is probably a never read.

I loved Addie LaRue, but it had several of my favorite tropes. Loneliness, mortality and immortality, leaving a mark on the world ... yeah. :)
I liked Illuminae, but never enough to actively pick up another book by either of them, and now I won't because of all the other stuff.
I think I'm probably done with Sarah J. Maas, and adjacent books that remind me of her stuff, and so that includes The Red Queen. I like faerie stories and fairy tale retellings, but I don't have the energy for love triangles and heroines who we're told are smart and brave, and never show it on the page. I'm making some assumptions here that books with a similar covering and market vice are similar in other ways.
I don't really judge people for what they read or don't, so it weirds me out that Booktubers have to do the whole, "This is just my opinion, and I'm not saying you should feel the same thing..." I like when I have books in common with people, but I don't need it to give people respect. I don't take it personally.
Unless it's a man opining on romance.

I just recently heard of Addie LaRue, a former (Public Library) coworker of mine wrote a glowing review that grabbed my interest. I’ve never been a fantasy reader, but I’m trying to to read out of my comfort zone.
I’m going to have to revisit the synopsis to see if it still sounds good, or if I just got caught up in my friends excitement!

    • @michellerever3564
      @michellerever3564 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@hallievanoutryve3109 The main criticism of Addie for a lot of people is that she lives 300 years and seems to keep her journeys to predominantly European areas, and doesn't "do" a lot. That's accurate. LOL!
I think it's easy to read the premise and think it's going to be about a woman who goes on epic adventures and travels the world, and that's not who Addie was, or what she wanted. Without getting into spoilers, Addie wanted to not have to live and die as, essentially, Belle in her poor provincial town. She didn't want to get married to a Gaston. That's what she was freed from, with unintended complications. Once she got that freedom, she understood the ways that it turns out she didn't want to be free, the ways she actually want to be bound to places and people.
Addie is a very Caucasian book, other than a secondary character. I understand the why, but it's not up to me to dismiss it as a criticism. I can also see how Addie's choices would drive a reader up the wall if they'd envisioned a different type of heroine.
      I hope this helps. :)

For instance, I have never read Lolita for the same reason. I cannot say I "liked" the book, but it was the best book I read that year. There is a saying “jump on the bandwagon” meaning something new, is anything truly new in story telling under the sun. Yet when something thereby seemingly new arrives in word writings aside from plagiarism is offered others seek success follow pattern pretty traditional in writing . Prime example Harry Potter so many writers sought success in the same vein. Copious volumes by authors seeking notoriety , fame . Of course lessor than satisfactory occurs “lackluster” offerings. And yet sometimes something really wonderful words into being . But as a librarian y get it lv a writer, reader of a lifetime 🧕🏿🌷🤓

I have kind of the opposite problem re:Schwab where the synopsis sounds really good to me, I’m super psyched, and then I read her book and am underwhelmed. I love the premise and concepts behind her books, but the execution almost always leaves me confused about how she could have messed up such a good idea. She seems really nice online though.
Morgenstern’s books are very much about the pretty writing and the vibes~ and atmosphere.✨ So I totally understand people who are like, “I don’t have time for this.” I don’t think it’s a huge intellectual exercise per se. Rather, the plot just doesn’t matter that much, and not a lot is happening at any given moment, which is why people can’t tell you what the book is about. Since you didn’t like Catherine House (another vibes~ book - not trying to compare the writing), your instincts to steer clear are probably correct.
A lot of self-help books are grifts. So I’m not surprised re:Hollis.

I tried starting My Dark Vanessa, but it's very heavy and I wasn't in the right headspace to pick it up. I'm planning on reading it eventually but it's not one to go into if you aren't prepared mentally for it. If you do pick it up, I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Agreed on Emily Duncan, Rainbow Rowell, and Jay Kristoff among your other picks. I used to like Jay Kristoff up until I realized what he's done over time, and he's done these things, like you said, over and over again. And it's very tiring.
Also Rachel Hollis always came across to me as doing too much and being very judgmental, even in her books. I've read her books and they were not good.

Also, I loved Starless Sea, but it's a very beautifully written book that is difficult to get into. I took my time with it. So I totally get it. Much love to you, as always. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Thank you for sharing! So I have read none of the books on this list, and the only one on my TBR is My Dark Vanessa, and for sure this is one that I will have to wait a long time to open up just due to the subject matter and needing to build up my emotional wellbeing prior to facing that subject matter. I did read Nabokov's Lolita when I was in high school, so the fact that this book is written by a woman and presents the victim's POV... I feel like I owe it to myself to balance things out, if that makes any sense?

Some of these are some of my favorite books lmao 😂. You couldn't pay me $1M to read any of J. M. Buckner's books. I won't be reading Lauren Hough either... nothing by Jessica Cluess or Steven Erikson. And never Life After Death, oh no no no no no.

I so appreciate this video! I feel the same way about some books that are really popular but I keep just not picking them up. (However, CARAVAL!!!! 😭😭😭 it’s my favvvv! Jk jk it’s definitely not for everyone. I just love the writing and the romance so much.)
I totally get that feeling of having so many books on your TBR it’s not worth reading books that you aren’t excited about or not interested in just because they’re popular.

I heard good things about 'my dark Vanessa', but due to the content I just can't bring myself to read it. So I'm always glad to see I'm not the only one :')
'A little life' is always the first book which comes to mind on my 'never read' list.
As someone who got really mad after reading 'Caraval' and has it as her least favourite book last year, I'd say you don't miss anything :')
What you said about YA Scifi was interesting, I'm probably going to think about how I read the genre in the different target age groups for a while!

I have read The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and The Starless Sea. With the Invisible Life of Addie LaRue I read it because the premise did sound interesting to me and I did enjoy it, but apparently I didn't enjoy it as much as everyone. And now I think it is overhyped.

Recently heard what Em. A Duncan got up to and took that book off my list SO FAST.

Who is Rachel Hollis? I've never heard of her.

Self-help guru of the GirlBoss school, but a lot of her success came from marrying a Disney exec ... who she is now divorcing. Apparently they were struggling in their marriage while running expensive marriage seminars.
She recently decided the hill she wanted to die on was referring repeatedly to her house cleaner as the woman who scrubs her toilets, and how she worked hard to have a WOMAN WHO SCRUBS HER TOILETS. Itch was just really combative and unnecessarily demeaning. And she hashtagged a lot of inspirational figures and women of color, as if she was comparable, and then denied making the comparison.
A couple years ago, I grabbed one of her books from a Little Free Library, and never read it, but it sits on my shelf. I suppose I should walk it back there.
If you want to go down the rabbit hole on this, SAVY Writes Books covers her extensively.

Still haven't read The Starless Sea, but I will. At some point in some future. I still need to try Brandon Sanderson's books, but somehow there's other stuff that comes along, like Robin Hobb. I had heard about the Farseer Trilogy, looked into the first book and finished her story arc about Fitz. Would love to read more, but who knows if she'll continue in that particular world.

I read FanGirl and I agree with you, for my least favorite part of the novel was the fanfiction part. I persevered through those parts thinking it was central to the part of this young adult/coming of age story. That portion was not engaging and could have been omitted.

I won’t be reading My Dark Vanessa either. Just don’t need that in my head. On a lighter note, I’ll never read Normal People by Sally Rooney. The first time I saw the cover of it (this was on a trip to London), all I saw was a woman stuffed into a sardine tin and I was instantly turned off. Even after I realized there was a guy in the sardine tin too, it didn’t change my mind. 😂😂😂 And there are a lot of books I won’t read just because they are too damned long! 😁

Totally understand about My Dark Vanessa. I read it as an 11th grader and I wish I held off until I was out of high school to read it, but it is still such an impactful book. I would hold off on the book until you're absolutely ready to deal with the subject matter.

I read The Red Queen series. The first book was good, but I began to lose interest as the series continued. The characters I liked best died, and then I was no longer invested in the story, though I persevered and finished the series. It also could have been more diverse.

I haven't read any of the titles you mentioned and, honestly, the only one I've heard of is Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab which I have no interest in at all. And, let's see, some popular books I'll NEVER read are...
    - The Lord of the Rings stuff
    - The Game of Thrones stuff
    - whatever that "dragon series" is called by Christopher Paolini
    - the Six of Crows stuff
    - anything by Cassandra Clare
    - and the majority of "The Classics" will probably remain untouched, as well, since I'm STILL struggling with Moby Dick. I've been on page 268 since April... of 2020. 🤮

The only one on the list I've finished is the Starless Sea. And I enjoyed it but the ending fell apart completely imo.
I tried reading Addie Larue, but couldn't get past first two chapters. Everyone is praising the writing, but to me it read like my most pretentious high school assignments.
I really enjoyed the video, and I hope this is OK to say, I really love your voice, it's so calming and nice.
