What a joy to see and hear these four greats of the past.......it has really touched me to hear my favourite Concerto played by these hero’s.
To think these four gods and their orchestral companions have welcomed me to hear this miraculous music on this night. I give great thanks.

Monumental collaboration of Four Giants ! And what a fine gesture by the three to honour Maestro Bernstein for his 60th Anniversary...
When this took place Menuhin was 62, Previn was 49, and Rostropovich was 51. Only Previn is still with us (aged 87.) Previn sounds slightly better on this recording than he does on the one he did with Anna Sophie Mutter and Lynn Harrell. Thanks for the video.
Indeed, what a line up! All 4 of them were celebrated symphonic conductors, 3 of them were accomplished jazz musicians, and 2 were talented composers!

Unfortunately Mr. Previn died recently. 3 GREAT souls now play for God and His choir of Angel's and His Saints in heaven.

Please, one of them was an accomplished jazz musician and, as you know (and noted), he happened to be one of the talented composers as well (from all those film scores during his "Hollywood" years to the violin concerto and opera of very recent vintage). That "what a line up" included a pretty decent, perpetually under-regarded band, too!

I remember watching this broadcast when it originally aired. Mr. Previn got in a good line: "We have just played Beethoven's Concerto for Four Conductors and Orchestra." (Referring to the fact that he, Menuhin and Rostropovich were all notable conductors as well as instrumentalists.)
I never knew that this happened! A real summit.

If this was Bernstein’s 60th Birthday, then the recording/performance was in 1978. I wish I could have been there to hear it. the recording leaves much to be desired from these great musical exponents.

ANGELS PLAY BEETHOVEN
One of my favorite concerts played by such amazing artists, that is pure magic! I had the privilege to attend to concerts where they performed, I remember Bernstein and Previn conducting and Menuhin playing! The three concerts were played in Barcelona Palau de la Musica Catalana and I will never forget them! Thank you for the joy you brought and still bring to our lives!!

Curious to know how Previn was chosen for this - although famous as a conductor and easily a good enough pianist to play this he was hardly in the same class as Rostrapovich and Mutter as a soloist. Perhaps a friend of Bernstein?
Same level of genius re musicality, and the other soloist was Menuhin not Mutter.

A great recording... But I would think that the Oistrakh, Rostropovich, and Richter (with Kondrashin conducting) was more magnificent.

😀 but it is exceptional luck to watch the 4 musical geniuses playing together at the same place.
Tell me something........is Bernstein pregnant.........looks like he is giving birth! When you think of the sound that Toscanini produced without the "drama queen antics"
But he also produced great results from orchestras. So I wouldn't mind it as I only here for the music. Besides, I can't really imagine a person with a personality like Bernstein conduct like Toscanini. So, even though a lot of people find it very unnecessary, I believe it also contributes to his "greatness".
