WOW!! Even though this video is 6yrs old… It’s as helpful today as ever! My Boxster had developed a misfire and being a traditional ‘car guy’ I had no idea how to look at plugs and coil packs on a flat six engine! I was genuinely ready to get my wallet out (again) but this fantastic video saved the day! Well shot, direct and to the point without any BS, or silly background music, long intros or any of that other junk! Nicely done Ry! 👌
How could this vid be down voted? Great camera work, great explanation, no crap chat or ego. So was the down vote because RY didnt come to your house and fix it himself? :D ?
Really nice job. I’m considering my first used Boxster and doing my homework. This was encouraging and the maintenance does not have to cost a fortune like I imagined. Thanks
Thanks Ry, this doesn't look too hard, I'll proceed on my 2002 Boxster! For those wondering which plugs to buy, there's a number of resources on the web to figure that out of course. For my 2002 Boxster, it looks like the Bosch 7413 Spark Plug is correct, and I can currently get a set of 6 for about $30 through Amazon.
Good video but I would have to add on some tips for people. You should clean the surrounding area any time you have part of the engine exposed so you don't bring foreign contaminates. You should also check gap on spark plugs, apply anti seize to the threads of spark plugs, dialectic grease to the coil pack to ensure water tight connection.
@ok2853 just googled it, I guess with modern spark plugs you don't need to do it anymore since they have a special coating on them. It used to be highly recommended so they don't seize in aluminum heads
Great vid. Just replaced my spark plugs yesterday. Only diffrence is that I got torx screws and the connectors pint upwards. I have a boxter 986 -04 30Nm on sparkplugs and 10Nm on the 6mm torx screws
Well my plans are to put in a full touch screen double din radio. I am also buying drop in cup holders for the center console. There also may be a few interior panels that I want to replace eventually. OH and I want to replace the diff fluid. The problem is, the car is in amazing shape! It does not really need anything. If there is something specific you can looking for you can suggest it and I may be able to get around to it.
I would use a magnetic sparkplug removal tool - special order - instead of the rubber grommet type. If the rubber comes out of the 5/8th plug tool, then how will you remove the rubber grommet from the plug? It can be VERY difficult to remove, even with the engine removed from the car.
I don't know the model of Boxster this is but it is not a 981. In my 2014 Cayman 981 you cannot even turn your wrist vertically to get access to the coils as the space between the sharp edge of the cats and frame is too narrow. It is such a pain. You can barely even see the driver's side front coil, let alone reach it. Great video to give you a good idea how this process unfolds.
you could have shown how to replace those plastic tubes the plugs and coilpacks go into. would have helped me even more. but good video anyways. now i know at least that i don't need one of those carlift things (sorry i don't know the english word, i'm not a native english speaker.) edit: i'm going to use NGK V-line sparkplugs. i've used them on all my cars before and i kinda don't trust Bosch about ignition related parts (even though it's a german company and i'm german)
I had a Bosch spark plug electrode break off in my engine cylinder causing a misfire and extremely expensive repair. I would NEVER use Bosch plugs again.
Great video...thanks! Today First time...I changed my 00 Porsche Boxster spark plugs and found oil in two spark plug wells (rear passenger side). Any idea what cause this? Is this a serious issue? The coil/boot look fine, but not sure how oil got into the wells. Appreciate for any help...
No. The tip of the plug was dry. The oil was found in the well, but I cleaned it with a cloth. I just ordered two spark plug tubes for replacement. Issue might the o-rings.
Nice video. I was considering a 987 Boxster/Cayman but worried about owning a mid engine car due to difficult maintenance. So I’m more inclined to a 996 911 but they’re more pricey 😬 tough choice
Wow much easier than I thought. My 2013 only has 29k miles, but maybe I should change the spark plugs since they are still original. No issues though drives so smooth, so I don't know if I should.
There are two camps. 1: Do them at the interval set out in the owners manual and 2) do them once you experience issues. There are good points to both. I am in camp 1 but I try to combine the job with other stuff.
great video man, but I didn't get to hear clear what kind of spark plugs, that's why I asked, sorry man, but I enjoy your videos.. great videos, loved the ones with the xterra, I recently replaced the gear oil, your video helped me out a lot, same procedure, thanks a lot, keep up the work done....👍
Oh sorry about that, they are called Bosch Supers. They are the ones with the 4 prongs on the top. Thanks for the compliments. I am very glad my videos help you!
lol dude.. the people who gave u thumbs down were porsche dealer techs they were like dam!! this kids messin with our money showing people how they were getting ripped off bringing it to us.
You really should use a torque wrench. Those washers on the new spark plugs are crush washers and require a specific torque value. If the the washer doesn't fully crush per its intended design, you can damage the coil pack tubes and possibly get a missfire.
I doubt that. If you don't tighten the plug enough to crush the washer you had never tightened the plug in the first place. I would never torque a sparkplug. At least with a regular ratchet you can feel the tension and be able to feel if the threads are going to let go. Spark plugs only ever need to be snug. Not tight. The gap matters most. All coils and wires are intended to seat fully without arcing. If the plug washer wasn't crushed, the boot would still be seated on the plug and the washer sits at the cylinder head and the actual electrode goes inside the cylinder heads so the electrode would never be able to arc over to the washer.
The old plugs were loose and so are the new ones. If you look at the old gasket, you'll see it's as thick as the new one. Means it was never really tight - no evidence of gasket crush. Always use lube on threads and both sides af gasket. Tight by feel or at least 25 pounds. Realize the spark plug is a cork for an explosion that occurs thousands of times per minute. It must seal. I could tell the old plug was loose by the ease of removal with such a short wrench. It'll never be tight with it either. The factory torque is to protect you from yourself and to protect the cylinder from empty headed.
you have to wonder what were these car makers thinking. I thought mercedes was complicated ha ha. this is why it costs 1,000's to own and maintain a porsche unless you trade it in after 2-4years
Rubbish - A POrsche can be as cheap as an ordinary car Plugs are similar price as are the Coil Packs if you do the work yourself Porsche don't make parts they are sourced in MUCH cheaper to run a Porsche than a Merc

Thanks so much! I take pride in making simple videos to get the info out there. Thank you for watching.
Quick and to the point! Time lapse too! Thanks for not telling your life story before starting.

"Down voted", Hello fellow Imgurian! :)
Maybe because he didn't use the correct tool to torque the spark plugs down to spec? 🤷♂️
jealous
Probably all Porsche Dealers! 😂

Nice! Hope it goes well for you!
I bought ngk spark plugs from Amazon. Turned out to knock-offs. Buyer beware.
Great videos!!!! Considering a boxster so all this insight on getting to the engine is amazing. Thank you :)

Anti seize is actually recommended against by porsche
@ok2853 just googled it, I guess with modern spark plugs you don't need to do it anymore since they have a special coating on them. It used to be highly recommended so they don't seize in aluminum heads
Yes gaps!
I would always check the plug gap before fitting.
Excellent video! Thinking of buying a 2000 Boxster S but want to make sure I can do most of the basic maintenance myself.
Thank you for sharing.
Awesome instructions, ty so much. I had to subscribe because you know what your doing and make it understandable.
Thanks for the sub!
Great vid. Just replaced my spark plugs yesterday. Only diffrence is that I got torx screws and the connectors pint upwards. I have a boxter 986 -04 30Nm on sparkplugs and 10Nm on the 6mm torx screws
i always use air to blow out spark plug recess area before removal so any accumulated dirt doesnt fall into cylinder.... good video
Great video, wish you would make more of them for the Boxster!
Well my plans are to put in a full touch screen double din radio. I am also buying drop in cup holders for the center console. Any idea if much has changed in this process between the 986/987/981?
You are very good at explaining things in major detail and you do a great job thank you
You're welcome, thank you for watching. 👍🏻

Sparkplug ratchet wrench ftw
Do the spark plugs come pre-gapped? I didn't see him adjusting the gap on those plugs.
Does Bosch specify no antiseize on plug threads? NGK doesn't recommend it on their plugs, but not sure on these. Nice camera work.
Thanks. TBH I didn't really look into it.
Doing the job today on a 2015 Cayman. Will post what I learn!
👍🏻💪🏻🤘🏻

986. poor access on 987 too

+Yang, Nhia was the oil on the tip of the plug where it sparks?
No. The tip of the plug was dry. The oil was found in the well, but I cleaned it with a cloth. I just ordered two spark plug tubes for replacement. Issue might the o-rings.
Nikolas Yang what is the valve cover gasket and o ring gaskets that go around the plugs?
If the conical shaped end of the ignbition coil tube is missing, should I replace the tube part only ? Chhers from Oz.
Great video, thank you from Italy
Great video. Would the process be the same on a 981 Boxster? The dealer is looking to charge $500 to change the plugs at 40k miles!
les!
+K.J. G. If its not the same it would be very similar.
NICE VID, HAVE YOU DONE AN OIL AND FILTER CHANGE VIDEO?
Wow, straight forward! thanks for sharing!
Nice video. I was considering a 987 Boxster/Cayman but worried about owning a mid engine car due to difficult maintenance. So I’m more inclined to a 996 911 but they’re more pricey 😬 tough choice
Thank you for posting this video. I feel like I made a new friend!

Great informative video, which will save you £250 at your Porsche centre, thank you

Great video? Question? Is this your car? What year is it? I have a friend of mine he's got a white one...
Yes, this is my car. It is a 2001.
@@Rythecarguy Is there any difference between the base and the S as far as doing the job? I have a 2000 986 S
Very informative....thanks!
No problem! 👍🏻
Great video with clear instructions! Thanks brother🤘🏻👌🏼
Anytime! 💪🏻🤛🏻

Haha right on! 🤘🏻
It may just be a difference in years (mine's a 2002), but my coil bolts are TORX® T-30.
No antisieze on plugs ? No dielectric grease on plugs ?
Naaaaa snake oil
Not recommended
Thanks dude!

You’re welcome, thanks for watching
Nice job. Thanks for posting!
What kind of spark plug these use? 🤔❔❓
I explain in the video.
Good video, I would just add check the gap on your new plugs.
Big Thumbs Up!
Thanks!
4 words: coil pack heat shields 👍🏼
What year is your boxster?
2001
great vid ty!

“Using a normal Allen wrench would be a huge pain”. Proceeds to use a normal Allen wrench at 2:29 on the top bolt of the first coil pack 🤣
Bravo Sir... and thank you!
Grazie
Prego! Grazie per aver guardato
Oh it's harder than Subaru boxer engine.
you have to wonder what were these car makers thinking. I thought mercedes was complicated ha ha. this is why it costs 1,000's to own and maintain a porsche unless you trade it in after 2-4years

It’s only the boxsters and caymans which are mid engined. The 911’s are easier
Good video ...pity he didn't s how how to remove the two awkward ones ....They are bas....trds
If they were any more difficult than the rest I would have made a point to show it.
Anti seize anyone?
Thank you for the video, as expected its a porsche, what else needs to be said, engineered junk.
Great video, thanks for posting!
