Hi Jim! I can’t believe it’s been twenty years since your Lil’ Red project! I followed it back then , and LOVED it. You did a top notch job! It really does look fact’ry! 🙂👍 I’ve been away from The Diesel Page for FAR too long. I attended the 2001 and 2006 Rendezvous’, and now I’m SO happy that you’re on TH-cam. 👍
So, you were there at the our Rendezvous in Ohio and Michigan! Cool! Welcome back! We're excited to begin our TH-cam channel - it's a fun way to reach new people and catch up with GM diesel owners. We should have started a channel sooner. A lot more content is planned for the channel. And to everyone... be sure to subscribe and let us know what you'd like to see. Jim
Yes, you can swap a Duramax 6600 and Allison into your 1998 C3500HD. See the links in the description for this video for more information. Our forum blog contains a lot of information, including a link to a 1998 Chevy swap we were a part of. www.thedieselpageforums.com/tdpforum/showthread.php?35210-Lil-Red-Duramax-6600-Allison-Conversion-Swap-amp-OBS-NBS-Dash-Conversion
Is there any good transmission crossmembers you'd recommend for doing the swap into a squarebody truck? Or does it have to be a custom welded crossmember. I'm running a ZF6 manual in a 2wd truck
Visit the following link on our web site. It contains an image of a transmission crossmember used in a 1987 Duramax Squarebody, though this one is 4WD. www.thedieselpage.com/features/ClarkDMConversion.htm - By the way, I'm using the factory original transmission crossmember in my Lil Red truck that was originally used for a 700R4. I contend that the geometry of the factory crossmember is correct even for the Allison. In fact, I'm also using the factory 1989 rubber transmission mount in Lil Red. Thanks for watching. Jim
Yes, the swap Guide would work for you. The 454 trucks include a hydraulic brake booster, which would make it easier to convert. The smallblock trucks used a vacuum assist brake booster, which requires you swap to a hydraulic brake booster when doing a Duramax swap. A Duramax would solve the "get up and go" concern. ;)
An oil pan notch isn't necessary for the Square-Body trucks. Although, the forward section of the lower aluminum crankcase will likely need to be modified. It's an easy mod. We have an article available on our web site about a 1987 C30 that might help. www.thedieselpage.com/features/ClarkDMConversion.htm

Would the swap book still work for my 97 dually with the 454 vortec?
Love the 454, just doesn’t have that get up and go

@@thedieselpage oh absolutely. Sold my lml and haven’t felt the same since. Definitely going through with it.
Would I need to notch the oil pan to put a lb7 into a 1980 c10?

Yes... Chevy/GMC are the same except for the grille and some badging.
