Dude, I could watch this all day. I’m stuck right now with a bunch of pieces (song-lets?) that I’m having a tough time getting into the DAW and composing with because starting with a blank project is so daunting. This video really helps! Also,I love that shirt.

First off, thanks so much! I have been there my friend. It’s hard, but I hope seeing some simple steps can trigger inspiration! Get your music out there! Like I said in the video, I’m filming a full blown course that will take people from blank slate, to finished song. If you have any subjects you’d like covered specifically, let me know! Also the shirt is from my friend Anti Modern. Go support him!

Amazing video! Love watching ideas get fleshed out like this from the ground up! Inspiring stuff, and super relatable, right down to the nonsense singing to find vocal ideas hah. I noticed you have a handful of plugins on your 2bus. Can you share or make a video going over that and what each one adds to the sound? Interesting that you start creating with a "mastering" chain in place already. I've just started experimenting with that myself.

Hey! Thanks so much for watching! Just wanted to spark some inspiration to my fellow music creators! So this 2bus method is called “top down” mixing. I’m working on filming and releasing a whole course on taking people from blank session to finished product. Mixing along the way! My 2bus is all waves NLS Buss neve settibg, pultec EQ, API 2500 comp, LL-L3 limiter. The main thing is to make sure not to track things too hot going in. I basically “set it and forget it” once It’s on. I have tweaked the settings on the plugins, but I try to keep it very natural and make sure I’m not coloring too much.

Cheers for the video it was a good watch. I have a question about after you record the guitars and bass. If you are laying down ideas directly through helix and not the vst plugin, how do you remember what presets and settings to go back to if you want to re-record in the future?

Hey! Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it. The simple answer is I break it down to labeling. In logic I had “GTR 1,2,3,4”. Then in the Helix I just select preset “Heavy 1,2,3,4”. Not using the plugin allows for less strain on the computer. Then for the leads I just listen if they have delay or verb on them, since those are the two effects in the “clean-ish” preset, it’s pretty simple. If I love an idea and want to come back to it and finish it, most of the time I switch gears in my mind into “actually tracking mode”. This video just shows how to quickly throw something down to feel inspired with a bigger sound. I hope this helps a little.
