Simulation of Arc-PVD Coating Processes
Arc-PVD processes are hard to calculate because of the stochastic character of the arc spot motion. A semi empirical approach allows the simulation of the arc spot motion based on materials- and process data. So the target erosion profile is simulated and can be used for optimization of target utilization. On the other hand, spot behaviour is used to calculate the plasma propagation and the coating deposition profile. So an optimization of fixture design and chamber filling of industrial coating processes will be possible in the future.

      Maybe Tesla is actually licensing and/or using R&D by Fraunhofer? There were reports, Saueressig Engineering, who Fraunhofer partnered up with, would be setting up cell production for Tesla.

      Dear Tim, indeed most of the ceramic coatings are applied by plasma spraying since this is a much cheaper process. By using HVOF you can produce coatings with a much denser microstructure, higher hardness and smoother surface. This is due to the higher particle velocity in the spray process, which combined with lower process temperatures can also reduce phase transformations (which means you can maintain a higher amount of the original crystal phase in the powder). In the video the "dark coating" is a electrical conductive TiOx based coating for application as a heating coating system and by having a denser structure (less pores and cracks) you increase its performance.
