Quality and Informative Horse Hoof Care Videos. Many of these hoofcare videos hosted by Gene Ovnicek have been features on the "Dennis Reis Universal Horsemanship" show on RFDTV. Gene has been a professional farrier for over 60 years and is an authority on lameness treatment and the natural function of the equine limb. These videos are just a glimpse into the information available from Gene the many other farriers associated with Hoof Care TV.
Trimming Miniature Horse with SEVERE Distortions
Hoof distortions, confirmation issues, and lameness problems are unfortunately common amongst miniature horses. In this "classic" video with Gene Ovnicek, he goes over a front foot with some mild issues as well as a massively distorted hind foot that requires a diligent approach to set this little horse up for a better future. There are a lot of videos on youtube tagged as ASMR and Hoof Restoration that are just normal, everyday dealing with hoof overgrowth, with no explanation about what, why or how much. If you are interested in real hoof care education and solutions to common problems, there are some great videos like the ones at th-cam.com/users/hoofcaretoday and th-cam.com/users/lamenessprevention that are there to actually help people. We hope you enjoy this remix and find some useful nuggets of knowledge from farrier Gene Ovnicek and his 60+ years of experience.

Man that trimming and logic is incredibly useful. Hurts me to see how much they gutted this horse though
brilliant - many thanks
Great turning a good trim into brain surgery, please !!
Some people like physiology. Why comment?
I take it back i believe Linda Harris from TACT is on the right th-cam.com/video/Ewky9cO06Aw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Sk_tgwkFjsgszuRd
I have no idea why she is shoeing this horse. I have a 20 yr old TWH that has never been shod. He travels every rocky trail you can imagine and has great feet.
This is a great video! I started trimming my mini horses a few years ago and finding good informative videos was hard. Even though I’ve been doing mine a while, I always want to learn more if I can. Thank you for an excellent tutorial!
Natural balance is ugly and don’t look balanced
Where do you practice I really need help finding a person who can correct the damage from unbalanced trim
Where are you located? I’m in North Carolina and might be able to help.
Do you shoe harness
Great video thank you for being so thorough. It is very educational. Funny question : what are YOUR shoes. As a farrier I unfortunately get hurt behind the composite toe and it looks like you have protection of the entire top of your feet. I would like to get this type.
You so perfect , the best of the world 😅
Of all the trimming/shoeing videos I've watched, this video is absolutely mesmerizing, as I have a horse with stretched feet. I've never seen the condition so thoroughly and convincingly addressed How I wish I had access to such a hoof care practitioner. Thank you so much for your generosity in putting this out for the general public to access.
Looks good man
How can this guy’s knife be so dull?
It's actually not. Feet are so dry and hard in Colorado you do most of your exfoliating with your nippers because your knife isn't able to do much.
thanks for sharing!
Would like to see the Side View of the trim
Adding shoes? More of the same!!?
He had shoes on couldn't wear down, they were left on long time,no need to draw lines to see that.brrakover 2as terrible, coffin is negative,we did this!
This is us,we do all 5his and more to horses.check out dr bowker.
Very clear ...thank you

Great video!
Timely and professionally informative. Thank you. Tom
What do you think of that the frog is pulling the hole foot inward that got me look :th-cam.com/video/OlBTG2ySfWE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=oPQadKSq-7tX1sv2
Love the 50's Retro commentary "that's all we have time for folks" & Gene's silver screen Cary Grant good looks. Hollywood aside really interesting way of thinking about and problem solving ringbone.
You have such a gift for explaining and educating, even if im not familiar with all the terms, much more educational than many other videos ive seen
She is talking about that she had to ask a farrier and I just thought that she and you could do the absolut best to educated horse people in the world I love you both so much for you educating us horse lovers ❤
Thank you for all the importend info, it is so difficult to find farriers in my area, my horse has realy a contracted frog to the point that my hoofcleaner plunched into a deep big hole in the central sulcus, i was given the advice to clean it with Brintoverilte and 30 ml of it easy disapeared in to a big nothing above the central sulcus, what is the best aproach to this. for now i stopped treating it with anything and just try to get function in the frog taking the heals back and it helps the central sulcus hole is now closed or as you would say open and healthier, but he is sore and has a painface, can the digital cusion reastablish with frog function, because it felt like the hole digital cusion was just gone. my vets dont want to talk about it and my farrier nether they seam of no nowledge of what to do or say oh it doesnt matter i am so frustradet any advice will be apreacheadet
I have a horse that didn’t have ‘long toes’ - he still developed ringbone. I think there’s alot more to it. Chopping horses toes off creates problems in itself. Metal shoes are probably responsible. Shoes and too much work. That horse looks like it doesn’t want to flex its hocks at all. It wouldn’t surprise me if the horse had hock arthritis.
Yes, there is more going on with this horse than ring bone.
Thank you for all the great information. Really helpful to see how you took care of the toe distortions also to understand that the foot is distorted and not in natural balance with the elongated toes.
Such a good outcome. Love this video and all the others you produce!
You are so welcome to visit us in Denmark 🇩🇰 anytime, I will make sure you have place to stay and audience/farriers to listen to you ❤
🥰😍😘❤
I love how close you're getting with the camera
Video with the best explanation that I have seen so far
Most of the time shoeing is unnecessary.
Thank you so much, great video!!! After watching numerous videos, I was quickly losing confidence and was feeling apprehension about trimming my mare's hooves. I have never had to trim before and although I have seen dozens of horses and trims for the past 25 yrs, I appreciate all the visual examples and technical details.
pity the trimming of the toes is missing in the videos
Отчего у лошадей на передних ногах возникает котенок
P r o m o s m 💔
shut it
why would you want the coffin bone to be "nice and flat to the ground" when typical, sound hooves have the rear coffin bone raised 3-5° and many/most navicular horses have flat to negative angles?
The flat-to-the-ground reference was for side-to-side (medial/lateral) balance. The anterior/posterior position of the coffin bone is often positive as you suggested, especially on front feet.
@@codyovnicek3736 oh, gotcha - thanks for the clarification. 👍
These are simply put....Excellent classes! Thank you
I put them on a lot of walking horses
Incredibly helpful for new farriers.
The heels grow at the same rate as the rest of the hoof. So with the extra pressure, they do "run forward" with the toe because of the natural growth and pressure of landing. The best idea of how the internal structures are is to look BEFORE TRIMMING at the levelness of the hairline to determine where there is excess of pressure as the cornet band will bend upward with the pressure. and curl under with the run forward heels. Relieve the pressure (if long enough, the hoof exfoliates wall with that pressure). The run forward heels should be addressed but to take them down past the height of the frog is over pressurizing them. Measure the length before trimming and remember generally the heels should be 1" to 2" equally in height. If one MEASURED heel is longer/higher, look to level out the cornet band as if there was a measuring level set on the bulbs of the hoof.
my navicular mare has been lamed repeatedly by having her under-run heels cut back to the widest part of the frog. I had her xrayed pre-trim and found a level PA. I have fired all the farriers, she is barefoot and, at 77, I'm trimming her myself! Take lots of toe, good breakover, leave heels, ease the quarters, leave the dirt pack alone (just check for thrush every few weeks). Its been months, but her heels are less crushed and even self-trimmed a bit thru the wet winter, yet she is sound trotting in the pen!! 💪
@@judymiller5154 SuperWoman! I hope I am still caring for my horses at 77!
