  • Gene Ovnicek works on this horse with ring bone, which is basically arthritis in (or around) the pastern or coffin of the equine lower limb. This is a classic episode of the "Natural Balance Hoof Care Corner" featured on the Dennis Reis Horsemanship show in the mid 2000's. Although there are many new tools and hoof appliances that can be used today, the information and approach is still very helpful. Love the 50's Retro commentary "that's all we have time for folks" & Gene's silver screen Cary Grant good looks.
Hollywood aside really interesting way of thinking about and problem solving ringbone.

I have a horse that didn’t have ‘long toes’ - he still developed ringbone. I think there’s alot more to it. Chopping horses toes off creates problems in itself. Metal shoes are probably responsible. Shoes and too much work. That horse looks like it doesn’t want to flex its hocks at all. It wouldn’t surprise me if the horse had hock arthritis.

Yes, there is more going on with this horse than ring bone.
