I found this video as I find myself shopping for a new camera. I have to say I agree with some of what you have to say, but approach it from a different angle. The time to buy a new camera is when your ability exceeds the capability of your camera. I have found myself at that point now with my Nikon D5200 and even utilizing a tripod, buying another lens and shooting bracketed shots with an intervolometer to trigger the shutter, I find my shots lacking in certain scenarios. I shoot recreationally and professionally and in the professional sphere I am losing jobs to people with better gear. I could do what I've done before and invest in new lenses, but at this point it's becoming like putting a bandaid on a bullet hole. Unacceptable levels of grain on anything over 800 ISO, a cropped sensor that means I have to use a wider lens with more distortion, and 1080p video at the max often leave me switching to my Experian phone for some shots (which I've used professionally at times) that end up turning out better. I know my camera, I know my settings but I can't break this plateau I'm at. Meanwhile a fellow photographer friend of mine who has an A7iii, I've watched go from photos that are mediocre, to acceptable, to good to great in a relatively Short timeframe. Sure I can frame a shot better after having 10 years more experience than him and mentorship from some amazing photographers, but his overall composition is better despite him not using bracketed photos or even a tripod in most cases. I'm currently debating between getting the a7iii or a7iv, both cameras whose capabilities far exceed my ability. This will give me an opportunity to have a loner period of growth as a photographer. Moral of the story: upgrade when your abilities are consistently hindered by your gear.

When I look at a camera it has to be good in lowlight with good lowlight AF that's it,and I don't care about the brand or if it's an older camera. The amount of photogs I see in the pit using older Dslrs is normal, camera companies are pushing all these shiny new toys to the usual suspects. I will use my gear till it breaks down, the images that they produce are exactly the same as they were 8-10 years ago. Age doesn't stop them being professional level cameras, and remember the shiny new top of the range mirrorless camera you bought a couple of years ago has just diminished in price by a couple of thousand and counting.

  • @stevenbamford5245
    @stevenbamford5245 15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

If you want it easier then just use an I phone, I've taught students and they are still using film cameras and Dslrs because they are interested in learning the craft. Mirrorless cameras are indeed easier, but the final image produced is no better than an image produced with a 5Div or Nikon D850 or even a D810 etc. Even mirrorless if you are shooting video professionally you should use a gimbal, in many cases the ibis can be juttery or cause warping. Ibis in photography is not essential either, I would say to a beginner to get themselves a pro level dslr and a couple of lenses for a bargain, they will learn so much more about photography and not break the bank.

There are a lot of "experts" on social media showing off their latest top notch gear but the results produced look like they were made with a cheap cell phone... While it's important to keep up with new technology, spending money on something that will not increase your income or improve the kind of work you do, seems illogical to me.

I simply want to take really good pictures maybe of vehicles, nature etc. Like I said I’m a beginner. Sony or canon if video isn’t a huge factor for me? Also if Sony what would you say between these two for me A7iii vs a67000? Thanks so much Iv been stressed to make the right choice due to budget but still want to take great photos

A really honest heartfelt video Rick. Depression was what led me back to photography. What I do to help me be creative… 1. I don’t do social media other than family (it kills my creativity and self esteem) I’m not a pro though just a happy hobbyist so I don’t need to. 2. Where I’m feeling in a rut or not inspired I got out and offer to take pictures of couples on the street for free, you wouldn’t believe how many are grateful for that. I’ve never had one single photographer ask if I would like a picture with my wife, and I think that’s sad. it’s a memory and for me that’s what photography is. This gives me purpose a reason why my photography matters to others I always come back feeling good. Just a side point to that I’ve had job offers from that as they know YOU and trust YOU, it’s something I’ve always turned down as I want my stress levels low. But if you’re a pro this might just give you some work and make you feel good about your photography that in turn could spark your creativity. Jase

Excellent video Rick. I use an old Canon 6D for my macro/street and portrait work, it hardly has any autofocus points, but that one in the middle is incredible and since using it with back button focus I’ve never miss focused. I took a break from photography in 2010 and took it up again during the pandemic. If you would have told me I could have a camera like that for £300 I would have laughed. Since my return back to photography what I’ve learned is it’s not all about gear (obviously if you do macro then you need a macro lens) or the results but the process. Cheesy, probably but the absolute truth🙂 I’m a new subscriber after this video and I look forward to more of your videos. Jase

Autodidact and amateur here. Still shooting with my two old analogue Nikons F2 next to the D800E and Lumix G8. It´s all about the joy of creating pictures, being in nature, connecting with models. But most of all trying to be a witness to the times we live in. Sometimes out of focus can be in focus.

not to mention AI, if a producer needs an image they just need producers... as has happened with music. A producer says to the machine: I want xyz, he gets a version or million to choose from... then can enhance it to suit it's purpose. Even imaging for arts sake... bye bye AI can do it for every mug punter. Photography will be about romantic hobbyists, people who want stuff on the camera, not in it...

Adding a lut bakes in your fix to the video. So anything that didn't have the Mac OS Colorsync problem, now has a baked in compensation. So basically you solved a proprietary problem that appeared on color managed players on a Mac - and created a new one on every other platform and OS. To exaggerate the hypothetical- If you had a problem o. your computer where all skies were "red" instead of blue- so you added a LUT that change that RED to a blue. do you think that other computers that your image would look correct? - I think it would be a mess. I know that the new Adobe color management allows the user to change the source monitor to see the source using the OS profile - as Resolve also has had that functionality for a few years as well. That should of ( in my opinion ) be discussed here as well. If you aren't seeing what the OS is seeing, you might be creating even more problems as well. The only solution in my opinion is to have a decklink/Ultrastudio breakout box - that bypasses the OS and sends a real clean feed to a calibrated display. At least you know that the pipeline all matches to what you see is correct. All these baked in remedies ( Resolve has the rec709-a hack ) at some point Apple or PCs will adopt a standard, and then all the videos using a hack or LUT and baking in a minimal solution will either all be right - or all be wrong. But if that is how you present the video, then I have no problem. But calling it a fix or simple is not really representing the problem correctly. If you know that your client is using a Mac and watches what you send them in a color managed player like Quicktime - then yes, this is a fix. But for all other viewing - this is not a fix, it's a band-aid.

We're in a weird time where a camera from 6 years ago is considered "old". I remember talking to an enthusiastic amateur photographer in the early 2000s telling him my mom gave me her Canon camera she bought in the 1980s, and he was "Yeah, that's a good camera!" But on the other hand, digital photography is still considerably new, that's what, maybe 20 years we have really usable digital cameras, so obviously, innovations came at a much faster pace.

Haha, I so agree with you on the recipe thing. Perhaps they want a unique term for Fujifilm that is different from other brands. I was going to get the XT5 as my everyday camera but you got me sold on the X100V, or maybe I will wait for a while for the hype to die down so I can get a gently used X100VI at a more affordable price. That one seems to have many of the weaknesses of the X100V solved

Now if a camera company made an all manual stripped down no video, no hi tech computer camera, that's the camera I wish for. But sadly I can't afford it as it's already been done by Leica so unfortunately M10 at a whopping 5,000 pounds second hand is off the radar; why can't the rest of the camera makers understand this and make us a classic manual camera at a lower price. By the way wanting the best of everything, best reliable car, best hifi, best camera gear, it's a man thing and sadly marketing understands how we think.

Thanks bro this totally echoes my sentiment. A camera is a camera is a camera is a camera. Cameras are all so GREAT these days. Just choose one and use it - and have fun.

I have no words to describe this video but just have to say that was 42 minutes of very thoughtful words and images. So well done!

I adore my original Fuji x100s. And I’m waiting for my x100vi to land in my hands. I agree with all the faults, and weigh that against all the joys. And still land on the same camera. Wish I wasn’t as indecisive on the film simulations. But I feel a whole lot better hearing you say the same thing …!

I recently digitised some of my fathers slides, which he'd taken almost seventy years ago on a Kodak Retinette camera. The exposure is as good as anything I've taken on Canon 5D, 6D or anything else I have. I have a Canon R mirrorless which I rarely use. I do have quite a few Canon lenses buy can't see myself spending anymore money on hardware. Today's software is very good and makes up for a lot of deficiencies, mainly operator error.

Stunning photographs alongside even keeled narration made for time well spent. Thanks for a small moment of Zen. Well done, Rick.

Corporates are ripping off the gullible. The next 5 years camera tech exists today but they're holding it back to fleece customers slowly. In 2005 I bought a 12MP digital camera for about 1200 quid. I've still got it somewhere in attic. Point is, it's clicks are still relevant today.

I love how everyone who's posted a video of this trip has a completely different take on it. As you said, 90 odd photographers all had a slightly different angle and saw something different. I'm really hoping the trip is on again in 2026, I already have my name down for it.
