I love a proper camera but its not about the gear its about the love of photography. You can be more creative for both and will increase your skills specially when using phones as you will find more challenges in it due to its limitations. At the end of the day its the creative results of what you do that is important.

I think its about mindset and being in the moment, if I'm taking pictures I don't care what notifications are there I ignore them or turn off my cell service... Phone cameras are very good now especially since we have 1 inch type sensors... If YOU get distracted and YOU miss a shot thats on YOU, I don't have that problem nor am I much for social media. My pixel 8 pro can take some amazing shots, and yes I've had a few DSLR cameras. Saying theres a right and wrong way of doing photography is a douche move too as if someone with a four figure cost camera is so much better than someone with a phone, theres a video on TH-cam of a pro photographer using a multple year old phone and getting stunning shots... Is subjective, what someone chooses does not make them less than. I can't afford something decent to replace my DSLR that I no longer have... Doesn't mean I'm less than.

With the greatest of respect, I disagree with it being on you if you get distracted. Modern smartphones are designed to distract people and keep them looking at them as much as possible. Putting that blame onto people doesn't sit right for me.
I don't think there is aright and wrong way of doing photography and I don't think I said that - sorry if you took it that way. I said do whatever works for you, but for me this isn't the right way. I've taken some great shots with my phone, but it's not something I enjoy doing and despite what people say, they're not going to replace cameras anytime soon. If you can't afford a camera, and you enjoy it, that's totally fine. It's just not for me.

I agree with with you about phones for photography. Although I can think of at least two occasions when I would have missed a shot had I not had my phone and that would have been sad.
Totally agree about people at concerts with phones. It really puzzles me.

Great video Rick. Totally agree with all you say here, particularly the part where you mention people viewing their life through a phone as opposed to experiencing the moment. I never leave home without a camera, often just a small crop sensor with kit lens.

This is brilliant and so true. It drives me nuts when at a concert and people watch through a phone camera, what's the point of splashing out on a ticket and then watching it through a phone? Like you say most videos / photos will not be watched post the event. Sure I use my phone camera for straight forward shots and recording things when don't have main camera with me but it is rarely done creatively.

Been an iPhoneographer since the iPhone 4s - iPhones are powerful tools that I have learned to like for photography and videography, but I don’t love them. To me, they’re the happy snappers always on the ready to capture moments that otherwise wouldn’t have been captured. With that said, I thoroughly love an old Nikon D60 DSLR I picked up for less than $50 earlier in the year. It’s inferior to the phone in so many ways, but it is absolutely way more fun and engaging to work with.
If anything, the iPhone has caused me to rediscover old DSLRs, SLRs and appreciate more my newer Sony mirrorless. So, yeah - a good phone has its place in my toolbox, but it doesn’t replace any of my cameras.

More than 50% of the photos I like were taken with my phone. I guess it depends on your style of photography. It's much easier for Street Photography to use your phone due to how people react when you point an actual camera in their face. At the same time, if you like macro or landscape, or even architectural makes no sense to use your phone. It's a tool at the end of the day, and if it makes the most sense for the application, than you cannot say it's worse than a dedicated camera, because it's simply not the case.

    • @RickBebbington

It's funny mate, many years ago I dabbled with a dslr and I didn't stick with it. Then I went for yeeears just using my phone, and whilst at the time I thought my shots were great (which, not tooting my own horn here but they were still decent 😂), since now having used my beloved sony cameras for the last 4/5 years I've absolutely LOVED it. Phones are still lightyears away from cameras, ye in video they can be decent and wide images ye, not bad, but nothing my phone gives me is anything close to what my Sony gives me. I'm majorly in to macro, that's my "forte", using a Laowa 85mm 2x lens, my phone hasn't got a leg to stand on! 😂 But ye, totally agree mate. I'll use my phone ONLY when I don't have my camera on me. Otherwise camera ALL the way. Nice seeing Manchester as I well mate, lived here all my life ☺. Great video pal.

Yeah, I am right there with you, Rick. I definitely enjoy the experience of using my dedicated cameras to capture the moment or experience. It is a matter of convenience, in my mind, for others. We all have it and that is perfectly fine for most people. For me, though, I find I don’t get that connection of the photo on my phone as I do with my camera. Camera pictures, I can look back and remember the weather, the smell and just the overall feeling. Phone pictures just lack that for me. Again great for capturing moments with the family but sadly most of this just sit on the phone afterwards. I do, however, use my phone for scouting. It is nice to find something and then have that GPS location to easily get back to. So it’s good for something. Haha
Look forward to the “H” video. I, too, was wondering what word would go with H. “Home,” may be a good one as most of us often look to get the “best” photos from some far away land when many areas in our backyard can yield some great results.

I came back from the Falkland Islands with lots of video clips on my iPhone, luckily I had enough coverage on my 'real' camera to cobble together a video. The iPhone clips were too sharp and contrasty - most of the subjects were black and white, e.g. penguins, cormorants -- so I likely won't use them. BTW Audio tip: Filming in Falklands you need as much wind protection as possible, Rycote cage and big fluffy cover will be going next time. It's windy, really windy.

Far too many people seem to fawn over iPhone video, but I'm with you. It looks even worse when you put it alongside footage from a proper camera! Having just returned from Antarctica and Patagonia, I concur with your thoughts about wind protection!!

It seems the go-to is Fuji X100V, but it's twice as expensive. And likely too big to carry in a pocket 😅
What's your opinion on Canon SX740 or Sony HX99?

  • @MonigMedia
    @MonigMedia ปีที่แล้ว

Not gonna change anyone’s opinion with my comment. This is a progression of accessibility, Film cameras vs DSLR vs mirrorless vs iPhone vs ______ next convenience. Clearly film cameras are the apex (better colors, grain) but if it’s not based on lighting and framing but what you capture the image on then why even bother painting or drawing. The medium shan’t be the limiting factor but final image.

I don't totally agree. Yes going to an event and not being able to see anything but smartphones is annoying.
But you said you don't like the lack of settings and then said an app with more controls is annoying.
You say you like to use the viewfinder, does that mean all your shots are taken from 5 / 6 foot? I can get a smartphone almost anywhere.
Yes the sensors are tiny and they can not cope in every situation.
Nor am I saying they are better than a full frame camera but I do feel they have a place and I have made a lot of money with mine.
As for being distracted by notifications that's a you issue, I just ignore them.
As always I like you am not right or wrong. For you a full camera is right, for me a phone is right.

For some time now I have lost the pleasure of taking photos with the iPhone, the photos of the current models look a little “artificial”. Another point is that at some point the iPhone becomes “slow” as if the camera application loses effectiveness and that is uncomfortable. When I really want to take photos I bring my camera and for some reason they are the ones I value the most.

Phone cameras may be the first step into actual photography that alot of people will have. Besides, with the prevalence of social media, and how much they butcher image quality, phone cameras are perfectly fine for the average person who wants to share stuff here and there. Photography is a hobby that can scare alot of people with its pricy cameras and a huge variety of lenses and complicated things for the average person. In my opinion, phones have done more for photography than regular cameras when it comes to bring people into it.

    • @RickBebbington

It's all relative, isn't it. With regards to creativity, you're either creative, or you are not. I've taken, and seen some pretty decent creative photos. It's all about a persons willingness to be creative. Fact is, most people aren't creative, and putting a traditional camera in their hand won't make them creative.

I'm totally with you. Especially in concerts, when people hold their camera up for a whole song, I cringe. They are never going to watch this piece of crap, do they? I mean, not only the video is mediocre at best, but the audio? My goodness, every audio tape recording of a record in the 80s is better than that. Even if someone used the record as a frisbee on the beach before. And just for memories? This would spoil the great memories I had of a concert.
