    I’m thinking of moving to NYC post-retirement. I I’ll be 61 soon. lived in DC for 24 years after living in TX. I moved back in TX after retiring as most of my family lives here. Besides having family close by, other benefits are It’s a much lower cost of living than DC, it’s cleaner, friendlier people, great customer service, no state income tax, and no natural disasters in the part of TX I now live in. Housing prices are awesome. But some of the cons - it doesn’t have four seasons, not enough variety of stuff to do that appeals to me (even though I live in one of the biggest cities in TX) and I prefer a compact, walkable city with a metro/subway. So NYC is calling my name. I’ll be visiting for a 7th time (first time was in mid-80’s) in Dec with tentative plans to move to Manhattan or Brooklyn in 2025 or 2026, as long as the crime doesn’t get any worse and my health and fitness are as they are today. I love to know it’s not just 20 year olds moving to the city.

    These are great tips especially for those new to riding the subway. Know which direction you are going and make sure to get on the right train reminds me of my trip to Brooklyn decades ago, I was taking the 3 train from 14th st heading to Brooklyn but much to my shock ended up in the Bronx. This was due to taking the uptown 3 instead of the downtown 3. Too bad I had not noticed until I had been on the train close to 40 minutes !!!!! Live and learn! Thanks for all of the cool tips !!

    All of your advice is great! I moved from Seattle to New York 10 years ago. and I actually found that lining up appointments to view several apartments that I was interested in, within a week, and then actually booking a trip for that week to go to New York to view the apartments, I found to be more valuable than getting an agent! Because in New York you have to make rental decisions quickly anyways! That's just my personal experience.

    Thank you for your channel! I lived in NYC most of my life, but moved to LA for a freelance job and ended up staying for 12 years. Never stopped dreaming of moving back. Finally made it happen 2 years ago. But it was a slog. So much of your situation rings true for me. SO glad I stuck it out and couldn't be happier. Did you see the documentary about Fran Lebowitz? In it she was counseling her niece who wanted to move here...when she could "afford it." "Stop right there," said Fran.."Nobody can 'afford' to live in NY. That's never why people want to live here." There are many other great reasons

    Bittersweet moments rip at my heart strings. Transitions in life are more challenging to me now at age 67 than they were two (or five) decades ago. Time is the tyrant and it looms over me like a black cloud. I miss feeling carefree and lighthearted. Worry and caution have replaced those feelings. We prepare in less than a month to leave our Midwest home of 35 years and move south to a brand new home in a place where we know no one. I get tired of feeling terrified and pray the feeling of excitement will emerge once I’m there. You’re a wise woman Geraldine and if you have any words of advise you think might benefit me, I’d be grateful to hear them. Never having had children gave me a false sense of extended youthfulness and I think my mind and heart are now in a state of emergency trying to live in reality!

    • @geraldinebien
      @geraldinebien หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your words really moved me. I’ve been sitting with them. “Time is the tyrant and it looms…” u feel like I could make an entire video just about this or maybe even another channel! I heard something recently that really stayed with me - “choose your regrets” this is so hard but having difficult conversations with ourselves and coming to terms with our life choices of accepting where we are. Like for me, a big regret is not leaning into a career earlier in life (though I tried many things), but what that choice afforded me is time with my kids. It stings when we wake up with regrets rather than being preemptive but it’s not too late to come to terms with difficult things. I truly believe that. And this healing process eventually allows us to seek out the things that will bring us Joy 🙏 May I ask, Why are you moving?

Loved it and I left when he got sick so I could stop working and take care of him, NYC was too expensive without a job. Anyway, now that I am your age I have been thinking of returning but I see little reminders in your videos that remind me that maybe NYC is for the young, long walks, subways and without a partner it can be lonely, so many things to do but nobody to do it with…anyhow it is just my feeling…if tomorrow I won the lottery I would buy a brownstone in the west village and get a car with a driver …so maybe is the $ or lack of that makes it seem not ok for this age…😢😮you enjoy that beautiful city and I know Hoboken, it is nice too…enjoy 😢😮

      @@geraldinebien I started it about shamanic healing arts (which I practice personally and professionally for about 20 years) so stuff like moving meditation/qigong, shamanic journeying, shamanic drumming, shamanic reiki, storytelling, oracular divination of various kinds, etc. But I"m a spooky weirdo lady so it's mostly filmed like a silent movie, haha! But I am also super into dark avant garde, vintage and sustainable fashion, so I think about doing a channel for that instead. I haven't uploaded in over a year, I keep mulling it all over. I had a dream of doing YOutube for past 20 years!!! So it was thrilling to start it-but I am also a hugely introverted hermit, so it was equally terrifying, lol.
