Urbis/Schreder Sapphire 1 | 70W SON-T Warm-Up!
This is my Urbis/schreder Sapphire 1 street light lantern. Running 70W SON-T, the lantern is is relatively good condition, even using it's original lamp and photocell. This video showcases a full warm-up of the lantern, some facts about the Sapphire 1 and lots of pictures! Nothing was done internally (minus a clean) so the lantern still has it's original ballast, ignitor and capacitor, as well as the NEMA socket.

How a Street Light is Replaced | Sodium to LED replacement
Just got my hands on the rarest version of the 2600 the 42w PL-T version today
Is this actually a video? It’s on a par with the bloke who’s done a complete series of videos on hand driers in pub toilets.
Makes me happy, thats all that matters
I'm getting this latten from ebay and is my 2nd light I'm my collection with the ac ford
LOVE IT
If the capacitor not install. What is the different
it just affects the energy rating, but when running on household electric then the difference isnt really too big
best visibility in sodium vapor lamp,... still in front of my house,....
Do those photocells found on every lamp turn off each of them individually in England? I've never seen this happen. Usually the whole street gets switched, or one side of the street. I thought a human operator does it.
usually yes, each lantern is operated by a photocell. In some cases multiple lanterns can use one photocell or be switched manually such as in most car parks
Very common lantern in Suffolk and some parts of Norfolk that wiped out a lot of 35/55 Sox in the mid 2000’s. I have maintained SON-T(most common), CPO and also rare PL-T versions of the sapphire 1’s.
Cool video! There’s a housing estate not far from me that’s lit with 45w CPO Sapphires, although some of them have sadly been replaced with LEDs earlier this year. Also, I recently started browsing your street lighting page and I really enjoy looking at the pictures you took alongside reading the texts. I can tell you were inspired by StreetLightOnline!
Indeed I was, I've spent tens of hours reading mike barfords site and decided to document my own journey
Looking forward to the upcoming videos
Nice, no surprise for cobwebs when the gear compartment is rated to IP43/44 lol.
Nice lantern!
cool, but try to find a way to stop the flashing
The flashing is caused by the frequency the lamp operates not matching the FPS, so i'll have a tinker with settings and see what I can do and if theres a way to match it up/ make it better
I never knew you were into Streetlights Pidge!
You can do a couple of things depending on the intensity of the light. You could move the camera further away, and you an change the EV (exposure) and ISO (light sensitivity) settings. You'll need to figure what works best for each individual lamp type and power, and it may change throughout the lamp warmup.
@@Trims-And-Things didnt know you were either xd
@@George_M55729 awesome, I'll give it a go when i've got some time to kill to figure out what works best
Was the MA saved
Not that one, but a few months later I did save another MA90
Great video Leo
What kind of eye protection did you wear?
good ol sunglasses, I also didn't look towards the lamp while it was on
Cool! I might be getting one of these and an S-Line soon. I’ll be one of the few American lighting collectors (if not the only American lighting collector) who owns one.
That is cool! Very noisy lol
What is the Hz value of this ballast?
ballast operates at 50Hz
@@LeoLampposts Well, let me ask you one more thing, what is the difference between these Hz values, for example, I think there is 60 Hz, what is the difference?
@@vartex4488 I'm not 100% sure but I think its the number of times the lamp will switch on and off per second, which causes the flickering visible on cameras. Higher Hz values will turn the lamp on and off more times per second
@@LeoLamppostsI'm sorry for taking your time, I have another question: Why do ballasts at the same Hz make different sounds?
@@vartex4488 Theres no worries! I believe (although I'm not 100% sure on this) that it's to do with the strength of the magnetic field produced by the ballast to slow the current in order to run the lamp. Depending on how the ballast is built/ its age it can make a louder or quieter buzz. Without a fixture (as seen in the video) this buzz can get quite loud haha
THAT HUMM SOUNDS AWSOME!
The light got fixed and is now LED
what's the difference between SON-E SON-I SON-T?
SON-E is an elliptical lamp SON-I is a lamp with an internal ignitor meaning that the gear won't need one SON-T is a tubular lamp, theres fundamentally no difference between SON-E and SON-T other than the shape, although some SON-Es can be coated which reduces the lamp glare
@@LeoLampposts does it give the same kolor temp 2250K? was there such thing as self balled high pressure sodium oval coated bulb like self ballasted mercury bulb?
@@mercuryvap I believe the colour temperature remains the same or very similar, and I havent heard of a self-ballasted SON lamp so I'm not 100% sure but lamptech.co.uk has lots of information on sodium lamps
Nice I’m getting one of these soon I ordered it on eBay it is 70w son, and has a dual tap ballast so I can run 50w or 70w
1:22 I have a ballast like that old one, mine is a 100w SON T one made by Harvard, a company that made them but went bust. That little red connector wire in the middle is for a node CMS control to be connected to! Nice video and restoration, I actually bought one of these lanterns from eBay and it’s arriving soon.
next vid.... the pole?
It was fixed shortly after and a new LED lantern was installed by the council
Today I learnt that street lamps can also be a hobby, interesting channel, subbed!
Alot of these on the A449
What is the difference between SON and SON E Also why is this one milk coated, if it lights orange anyway I thought milk coating is used if u want more white out of ur incondecent light
SON-T is tubular, SON-E is egg shaped or eliptical. I think it's to do with the light output/glare though I'm not 100% sure
It's mainly to diffuse the light in sodium or incandescent lamps. As a general rule, (at low level) If you can see the lamp, you should use a coated lamp to diffuse the light, and make the visible source less intense. If you can't see the lamp, you should use a clear lamp, and the shade or refractor bowl of the light fitting will diffuse the light. The coating on fluorescent or mercury vapor lamps serves a different purpose. That phosphor coating absorbs the ultra violet discharge from the mercury in the lamps and emits white light in return. Some incandescent lamps have a thick white coating like the fluorescent phosphors to change the white balance, and give a cooler colour temperature; but the coating on the SON lamp is more like a pearl finish incandescent lamp, and only serves to diffuse the light.
I stared at that thumbnail for a good five seconds before i figured it was a video about a lamp and not a soviet sci-fi film called WRTL VECTRA.
Firstly Urbis I always thought it was pronounced as “u-rbis” meaning I’ve been saying it wrong all this time and secondly I have seen the zebra bowl ones on crossings with a new build crossing in 2017 however it was there temporarily as in 2019 it was replaced with Urbis Ampera LED’s, wasn’t there also a Urbis ZX4 which some described as a chunky square lantern
My school had the Civic 1 I believe when the school was built in 2012 and opened in 2013, these were installed in the car park and the school courtyard area, although I left back in 2018, when I walk past they are still there and still light up which I’m surprised haven’t been replaced by LED’s but I wouldn’t put it past then to soon disappear and get replaced.
Love it, there's the same head a mile away from me
Great video. I have a small one and a medium. Both use a clip and hinge for the gear compartment so it might have been an option, never seen it before though so I find it intriguing. All 3 sizes could have the zebra optic I believe as my medium is a Vectra-X running 150W.
I used to see curved and flat bowl lanterns around my area before being replaced with LEDS
It's worth mentioning as well that these can come with: flat glass bowls, curved tempered glass bowls (which is what this one has) and deep polycarbonate bowls.
There’s a few of the deep bowls near me but I’ve never seen a flat bowl one in person.
We have the curved glass bowls in my village
Can u do a vid on replacing the bulb lammpost by uplands manor primary school on manor road
I can't do specific street lights but I can do a lamp replacement in one of my own lanterns for a video
Can u do that
Please
I wonder what year the 2600 came out in as I think the ones that were on my dad’s street until 2013 were there definitely before 2000 so these were maybe first released in the early to mid 90s?
I belive so, yes, mid to late 1990s
wow that is such a beautiful glow, great pick up
Can u do a video of replacing the bulb lammpost next to uplands manor primary school on manor road smethwick
hello, quick question, im beginning a collection of lampposts, and they will already be wired so they can be plugged in, i am wondering do they need a photocell installed so they can actually light up?
If the photocell isn't bypassed then yes, if you bypass the cell then one won't be needed, to do this connect the Live in and Live out wires leading to the photocell socket
