    These legalists have no siblings or families; the institution takes them in, they become bitter and their view of human relations becomes disfunctional. Then we let them or (their students) rule our societies. The power they seek is a function of the people letting them get away with what they do. They impose taxes because they have no way to make money on their own effort, because they have no original ideas and routine monotonous work disgusts them. They then join a political cuause in order to avoid "the boring hand life has dealt them". That's why they are all monks and recluse who come up with these manichean notions. Obviously it's not only China ... that's my spontaneous rant ...

    I have applied Mo Tzu's philosophy about music to sports for decades. Though, should I lift a finger to deny another their enjoyment, I would be a presumptuous hypocrite. Who am I to tell another how to spend their time? Unless they're empowered to tell me how to spend mine.

    Thought exercise I wonder if anyone more knowledgeable than me could help with: What would Mohism combined with other philosophies look like? Like Mohism with Yin Yang (which Taoism absorbed instead), or Mohism with Taoism, or Mohism with Logicians?

    It seems like the most practical thing for a follower of Yang to do is become a Confucian or maybe some type of priest, because then they can deceive and exploit others more easily. If someone keeps expounding Yangism even at harm to their own reputation and welfare, it probably means they don't really believe in it, because it would be in their self interest to pretend to believe something else. It's kind of a funny paradox in a way.

    There is an online novel called «战国野心家»on the Chinese Internet. This book tells the story of a modern man who returns to the time of Mozi with some crop seeds, joins Mozi's team, develops Mozi's thoughts, and finally establishes a Mozi regime. This is really interesting. I really hope you can understand Chinese, or someone can translate this book.

    I’d say Taoism is unique compared to Mohism and confusionism in that it seems almost more spiritual than philosophical. The DDJ didn’t really seem to point to a political philosophy but a spiritual way of life

    🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:07 🌟 Xunzi explores the paradox of life and death, emphasizing that people may choose death not out of a desire for it but as a rejection of undesirable circumstances in life. 00:48 📚 Xunzi, a prominent Confucian philosopher born during the warring state period, faced neglect from later Confucian scholars due to the influence of monks' philosophy during the Tong and Song dynasties. Despite this, his impact on Chinese education and governance endured for over 2,000 years. 03:36 🔄 Xunzi challenges the Confucian tradition by asserting that human nature is inherently bad. However, he believes that through deliberate effort and rituals, individuals can overcome their negative inclinations and develop morally. Rituals, according to Xunzi, play a crucial role in shaping peaceful and orderly behavior. Made with HARPA AI

    America schools tend to gloss over legalism. It's unfortunate, because when you look closer you see that it was ahead of its time in certain ways. Few people in the ancient world had such a clear understanding of the role of incentives and environment in shaping human behavior.

    • @ryokan9120
      @ryokan9120 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For his time, he did an amazing job. But it doesn't compare to some modern translations because some of the more ambiguous parts of Zhuangzi only make sense when comparing lots of different commentators and James Legge didn't have access to most of those commentators. It's also been said that Legge might have imposed some Confucianist and theistic biases into his translations because of his Christian missionary background.

    Thanks for the good overview, and bringing up the complexities that too often get smoothed over by popularized versions of Daoism (certainly in the west). The very grammar (or lack thereof!) of classical Chinese creates an additional layer of difficulty in translating the Daodejing -- not to mention understanding it in Chinese itself! I recently finished Brook Ziporyn's new translation (not a version) of the Daodejing which occasionally includes multilple translations of the same lines in order to convey some possible interpretations of the text. What I find particularly attractive about Ziporyn's approach is that he highlights the ironic uses of common words of the time and brings out just how subversive the text really is, beginning in the first chapter -- a truly countercultural philosophy.
