The Burning of the Custom House | May 1921 - Episode 36
มุมมอง 4.8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
De Valera’s return from the United States saw a disagreement over the conduct of the War of Independence. He believed that the ambushes and assassinations were mere “pinpricks” and that to bring the British to the negotiating table they would need large propaganda spectacles. Months of planning eventually led to the attack on the Custom House; seen by some as the blow that broke the British mil...
The Poisonous Friendship of Collins and Brugha | Jan - Mar 1921 - Episode 35
มุมมอง 9K3 ปีที่แล้ว
As the War of Independence approached its conclusion another conflict was taking shape; that between Michael Collins and Cathal Brugha. Most often Brugha is castigated as petty, bitter and jealous, trying to knock down the man who was single handedly fighting off the British. The reality is that Brugha was unnerved by the power Collins possessed, alongside his leadership of a shadowy, secret or...
De Valera in America Part 5 | Aug - Dec 1920 - Episode 34
มุมมอง 2.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
While de Valera had plans to remain on in the United States into 1921, his stay came to an end in December. By then he had moved against the Friends of Irish Freedom and created a new organisation, though he had left before it grew to over 700,000 members. He would leave as quietly has he had arrived, but he and the Irish Delegation had done much to promote Ireland's cause, as well as doing muc...
The Kilmichael Ambush | November 28th 1920 - Episode 33
มุมมอง 21K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Two men are claimed to have been shot during the false surrender, not 3 as given here. The Kilmichael Ambush stands as one of the most famous actions of the War of Independence but remains shrouded in mystery. An audacious operation which boosted Republican morale and shocked the British government, debate continues over the false surrender alleged by Tom Barry and suggestions he had prisoners ...
Bloody Sunday | November 21st 1920 - Episode 32
มุมมอง 46K4 ปีที่แล้ว
On the morning of the 21st of November 1920 teams of IRA men shot and killed British Intelligence agents throughout Dublin in a concentrated attack. Hours later British forces responded by entering a Gaelic Football match at Croke Park and firing into the crowd, resulting in the deaths of 14 civilians. Immortalized as Bloody Sunday, just one of a number of violent days in Irish history to be gi...
The Siege of Tralee and the battle that never happened | Nov 1920 - Episode 31
มุมมอง 21K4 ปีที่แล้ว
At the end of October 1920 a nationwide offensive was ordered to coincide with the execution of Kevin Barry. Though called off at the last moment, attacks went ahead in Kerry, leading to what became known as the Siege of Tralee. While the British government had to finally step in and order the Black and Tans to lift the siege, Britain would stage and film a fake victory over the IRA, publicisin...
"What's my life compared with the cause?" MacSwiney and Barry | Oct 1920 - Episode 30
มุมมอง 10K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Unwilling to create another martyr like Thomas Ashe, British authorities had taken to releasing hunger strikers and then re arresting them when they recovered. When released IRA prisoners would often go on the run and RIC morale was crumbling as they lost faith in the British government to protect them. When the Lord Mayor of Cork began a hunger strike, fully expecting to be released in a few d...
The Death of Seán Treacy | Oct 1920 - Episode 29
มุมมอง 40K4 ปีที่แล้ว
In October 1920 the new British intelligence structure operating from Dublin Castle closed in around Dan Breen, convinced he was responsible for the killing of a high ranking RIC officer in Cork. He would be hospitalized after a dramatic battle in Drumcondra but British agents would continue to stalk his close friend Seán Treacy. If you are interested in purchasing any of the books used to rese...
The Auxiliaries and the Essex Regiment | July - Sept 1920 - Episode 28
มุมมอง 30K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Deployed alongside the Black and Tans and sent to make Ireland “an appropriate hell for those whose trade is agitation”, poor conditions and a lack of a clear objective would lead the Auxiliaries on a war path of drunkenness, destruction and murder. Though consisting of just 2,100 men they would be the IRA’s main opponent for the duration of the War of Independence and would take part, as victo...
De Valera in America Part 4 | Apr - Aug 1920 - Episode 27
มุมมอง 2.4K4 ปีที่แล้ว
With both major parties nominating candidates for the US Presidential election, de Valera and the Friends of Irish Freedom tried to put their differences aside to campaign for a resolution on Irish Independence. However hostilities broke out again at the Republican Convention in June where de Valera would actively sabotage the success achieved by Cohalan, arguing that it was harmful to Ireland’...
Collins, Clarke and Caravaggio | June 15th 1920 - Episode 25
มุมมอง 6K4 ปีที่แล้ว
From Michelangelo da Caravaggio to Michael Collins and from The Taking of Christ to The Terrorising of Clarke, Italian Renaissance Art and the Irish Republican Army aren’t topics often discussed in the same breath. But an act of revenge and the grief it caused would link forever the names of Collins, Clarke and Caravaggio with District Inspector and Dr. Lea-Wilson and grant for them all a uniqu...
Mutiny in Listowel and India | June - July 1920 - Episode 26
มุมมอง 16K4 ปีที่แล้ว
June 1920 saw the new military figures appointed to take charge of policing in Ireland prepare the ground for legislation which would give British forces a freer hand in dealing with the IRA. However, attempts to use the RIC to assist the army as scouts started a mutiny in Kerry and the publication of an inflammatory speech given by the Divisional Commissioner led to his killing a few weeks lat...
Lord French and the Reorganisation of Dublin Castle | Apr - May 1920 - Episode 24
มุมมอง 13K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Most discussions on the life of Lord French end with his removal from command of the British Expeditionary Forces during the First World War but after this event he would have a dramatic effect on the course of Irish history. In command of the Home Forces during the 1916 Rising, he would support the executions carried out by Sir John Maxwell and later as Lord Lieutenant he would use largely uns...
Fine Gael and the Blueshirts | 1933 - 1934 | The Emergency - E03
มุมมอง 107K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Following the Civil War and in the absence of a meaningful opposition, Cumann na nGaedheal dominated Irish politics. In this time they also allowed the party to stagnate and had become overconfident that their record in government would secure reelection in 1932; instead de Valera’s Fianna Fáil took office and they increased their grip on power in 1933. Driven by fear and a desire to return to ...

Rome / The Vatican 🙏 📿 ✝️ 🤢 Hid the Fascists / Blueshirts With their infamous Rat Tunnels to South America towards the end of WW2 🐀 🐁 🐀 🤢.
The blue shirts are still at it in 2024.... All do they have changed their law on ( free 🤫 speech) untoward their own ... I'll leave it at that.
Why do you think Harris is after Israel he is just a Nazi himself
Now it's the black and trans.
De Valera was sincere and brave but dead wrong. The peace by negotiation had zero chance for Ulster. And if he had not gone to the USA the Union Flag would still be all over. And we would never have heard of Sean MacEoin and TomBarry.
AWESOME
Thanks Bud

Re Cairo gang picture, it's reproduced in my copy of Dan Breen's Fight for Irish Freedom as "Members of the Murder Gang..." between p.144-155. FWIW, 3 are identified as Irishmen. p. 146 refers to Maj. Smyth and his 11 picked men coming with him to avenge his brother's death (Col. G.B.F. Smyth of Listowel orders notoriety), and their becoming known as "The Cairo Gang". No further explanation offered that I see.
I often wonder which Irish comment on these pages. There is a real hatred of the British expressed and there seems to be a real ignorance of who the British are. As most British are a mix of English,Scottish ,Welch and Irish there is a general understanding of Irish history as most families have at least an Irish grandparent in the family and perhaps that’s why the hatred is not reciprocated. Also like it or not most of us on these islands share our history.
Ordinary British folk were not in favor of this nonsense ...Blame the genocidal BRITISH RULING CLASS.
We do, the average British citizen I'd imagine didn't even care about Ireland, let alone wish them ill will. At the end of the day, regardless of politics, the vast majority of people around the world are just trying to get by.
I wonder what those Fianna Fail politicians would think of the Shower of Traitors we are Lumbered with now? Who have sold the country down the River!. And continue to do so.
What year was this thank you
❤😢😢😢😮😢❤❤❤
Fantastic❤❤❤
Were the black and tans seen as a positive by the Irish communities they were trying to support?
Wot the f@*k
No.
Was the IRB masonic ?
TTE APPROVES OF OUR BELOVED BLACK AND TANS TEAM. PERSONAL FAVOURITE OF ABADDON.
Any info on Henry ( Harry ) Lang of Belfast think involved in Easter rising
The British empire truly was an evil empire, it’s remarkable to note that within 30 years of Ireland ejecting the British and forging her own way the British empire imploded and was consigned to the rubbish bin of history. It’s obvious that Irish people from all traditions was the glue that held the British empire together and facilitated it in controlling over 1/4 of the world.
Ireland for the Irish🍀
The question now is how will the Republic seek to control its rebellious people. They’ve just bought water cannons and not a shot has been fired yet. What will happen when the Garda face attacks?
Would love for this podcast to return. It's a great introduction for anyone interested in this most interesting period in our history
What is the reference to Collins leaving a meeting crying about? This is the 2 nd video I've heard you make reference to this but i don't know what this relates to. I'm not trolling, just genuinely curious. Great content by the way. Amazing channel.
Brugha accused Collins of misappropriating funds meant for weapons purchases. A meeting was held to try and sort out things between them but Brugha went on the attack, much like he did during the Treaty Debates. Brugha is said to have refused to shake hands with him and Collins, who was under a lot of stress at this stage, is said to have left the meeting in tears after facing Brugha's personal attacks.
How am I only now discovering this channel? Amazing content and a great back catalogue for me to work through. Thank you for the excellent presentation of our history
I laughed out loud when I heard about the firefighters - only in Ireland!
James, your productions are immensely detailed. Thank you. I had hoped you would continue with episodes covering the Truce period, the Treaty and the civil war.
Heroes maintaining law and order.
Was sean treacy staying at a safe house in phipsborough when he cycled in to talbot street to collect a suit. Where he was shot.
Great service to society you're doing making all this history easily digestible for anti intellectuals like me😂👍
What was destroyed in the conflagration? I had read that the Irish Domesday book and a copy of the Magna Carta were lost. It is hard to see any useful gain in this action unless it was to prove the intransigence and nihilism of the IRA.
From Solohheadbeg to the rescue and aftermath should have been made into a film.
Shouldn't you have mentioned the Constitution of 1938, which was a very important event which needed the approval of a referendum? It did lead to the declaration of the Free State Republic. 😉😄😉
Stereotypes of violence. Lovely people
Most watching these (excellent) videos have not yet awaked to the fact that Éire is now overrun. Looking at the valor and the sacrifices of our poor long-suffering ancestors is MEANINGLESS if ye cannot see that we, na hÉireannaigh have now all but lost our country, in less than 5 years-without ONE shot being fired? 😢😢☘☘
Excellent video. Well reseatched, produced and narrated. Subscribed, go raibh maith. 🙏☘🇮🇪🏴🏴🏴🙏
Ireland needs to show the world who they are and stop the stealing of ireland by immigrants. They are bringing too many. Up the real irish!
i read an account recently of events around this time in the village of innishannon near bandon in west cork which was both a stronghold of the blueshirts and the IRA there was a lot of assaults' criminal damage and ultimately a murder in the area. related to political conflict
Jews? I didn't even know they had them in Ireland. Must have come from England.
Ireland. was the only country in the west to accept jews during he holocaust
They funded cromwell's terror campaign in Ireland. He thought he'd allow them back into England and convert them to Xtianity. That group was gifted land in the middle east, so why are any of them in Europe?
Crowley attacking Yeats on the astral plane, etc... and Yeats rallying a bunch of white magicians to protect the main temple in London... This is straight out of a Doctor Strange movie. Except that Yeats and the others had these experiences long before 1963, when Doctor Strange made his debut appearance in a comic book. This is incredible shit. Now I wonder if Stan Lee and Steve Ditko (comic book creators of Doctor Strange) knew of Yeats' strange happenings, and fictionalized them. If so (and I don't know either way), that would make W.B. Yeats the prototype of Doctor Strange.
Unfortunately these idiots seem to have raised their heads again
They haven't changed as Fianna Gael still Rotten Traitors to the Irish Nation
Great overview of the turmoil which enveloped the Irish public at the hands of those who desired power and control. You have opened my eyes to a part of our history that has not been widely publicised. Great video and I look forward to seeing more. Thank you.
Farage vision of the future, something from the dark past.
Sean Treacy was my Great-Uncle. Desperate times demanded Irish Patriots willing to give their all. He did! ❤
Excellent content creator. Loved your fantastic Irish History videos. I have a suggestion for you. Probably loads of people, globally have no understanding of the US Civil War and would love your intelligent investigation. Thank you for all your efforts.
Picture of my great grandfather on here
The Blueshirts were modelled on Mussolini's Blackshirts. After Mussolini signed his Lateran Treaty with the Pope, fanatical Catholics in Ireland saw fascism as an acceptable political model that they should follow. Much like deValera, these guys saw themselves as Catholic first, Irish second. In short they were an assembly of religious nut-jobs and social climbers. The kind of people that James Joyce mocked so mercilessly - no wonder they banned his books!
