This channel is about vintage vehicles, refurbishment, repair, and most importantly, use. The channel started with a 1989 Toyota Dolphin 320RB motorhome, and we have added a 1978 Toyota Hilux Micro Mini, a 1978 Datsun Chinook Gazelle PopUp Camper, a 1978 Datsun 620 4x4. Since then we have followed the restoration of a 1987 Toyota 4Runner SR5, and other maintenance information on a 2009 VW Jetta Sportwagen. The channel shows how you can travel, use, maintain, and generally enjoy vintage leisure vehicles, even if you don't have a garage, or thousands of dollars worth of tools, plentiful land to keep your jalopies, etc. It does require you to have some mechanical knowledge and an adventurous spirit, so follow us along!
EP8: The Simplicity Of An Analog Truck: Take a look at the simple controls of our Datsun 620 4x4.
This is a short video that shows the basic simplicity of our Datsun 620 4x4. The reason I made this video is because most, if not all videos showing 620's, they have been modified in some manner. The first to go is the basic bench seat that is generally replaced by "racing bucket seats". Next is the steering wheel, replaced by a "Momo-Style" (or some other sort) of "racing" steering wheel. And generally, the basic cab just does not exist, except in some ground-up restorations of trucks that are kept for show and not really used as a work truck, like we do.
It's good to feel the basic controls of a 70's Datsun. Everything feels so mechanical and sturdy. The controls are basic but tactile. When you use the vent levers you can actually see what you're operating, baffles are opening, things are happening. In a new car you're shielded from all that. And in newer and especially electric cars, you just have capacitive touch screens, hand gestures, and voice activation that just detaches you from the driving experience. Not in this truck. Here you have to work to get things done. you have to muscle your way around (with both hands) to turn the steering wheel. Work your biceps to roll the windows up or down. Everything is work, but satisfying.
I have nothing against progress; in fact, I welcome it. But it's always good to not forget the raw feeling of piloting an old-school vehicle with the noise, the vibration, the harshness, the discomfort... And the feeling that after you drive it you've burned enough calories that you've earned yourself a cold beer!

EP7: Big heat problems for the Datsun 620 4x4: How we fixed the seat soak fuel boil and starvation!
มุมมอง 32521 วันที่ผ่านมา
In a previous video we explained how we wanted to make the Datsun 620 4x4 a reliable daily driver. Up until this point, the truck has been running well, save for a huge problem that makes it not drivable for long distances. It's been relegated to surface streets. This is a special problem because Miami's traffic is stop-and-go, which exacerbates the heat soak problem caused by poor cooling. Hea...

มุมมอง 1.7Kหลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I go over the associated real-life costs of what it took to get our 1990 Toyota Dolphin 900 Motorhome back on the road. The RV had been sitting for a few years in the Arizona desert so it was in dire need of attention. The elements had taken their toll on the paintwork, mechanicals, tires, and othe associated systems in the coach. Without access to a workshop and working remotely,...

มุมมอง 157หลายเดือนก่อน
The other day I was on my way to make some deliveries, and when I arrived, the Datsun was completely dead. The battery was unexplainably flat. Thinking that maybe it was just a bad connection, I tried the lights but nothing. So I was left with no choice but to pick up the battery and get it charged to see what's what. Once I brought the battery back and connected it, I could not find the proble...

มุมมอง 6462 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this episode we have taken the Datsun 620 4x4 from Phoenix to Miami. It's probably something that our barnfind Datsun didn't expect, but as we welcome it to its new home, there's a few more things to do. As we have discussed in previous videos, the goal is to make it a daily driver, working truck. And we're nearly there. It drives but there are some issues with the signals (namely, they don'...

In the continuing series of road trips in our 1989 Toyota Dolphin Motorhome we now reach one (if not the) most popular destinations in the Western US: Yellowstone and The Grand Teton National Parks. This was truly an adventure after driving from Cheyenne, Wyoming all the way to these parks. It was the first time staying in a very remote, very primitive camping area that was amazing. Stop that music!!!!!!!!!😢😊
:) Sorry about that! This was one of my first videos on TH-cam, and when I rendered it it sounded a bit louder than I would have liked, but not objectionable... and then I uploaded it to TH-cam and my goodness, something happened because it sounds so different than I remember..! Oh, well, I've been learning and working on the sound on later videos... Thanks for watching!
I'm still working a 1989 Ford.
Nice! That was when trucks were still square before Ford went to the blob designs in the 90's.
I had a 1974 Chevy LUV (Rebadged Isuzu) and it was very similar.
My uncle had a LUV, which I guess was an acronym for "Light Utility Vehicle"... my uncle loved it! I especially liked that they had a 4x4 version of it before Datsun and (I think) Toyota. The Toyota 4x4 I think came out in '78 and the Datsun first came out in the '80 or '81 720 but I swear his LUV was a '76. Someone may correct me on this.
I work at a dealership. Drove a lot of new trucks. I don't like them. I rather have something like yours.
Yeah, I agree, simpler is always better!
Reminds me somewhat of my 1983 Ford Ranger (first year for it here in US) in the simplicity --which I had with 4 cylinder, no-a/c, no power steering, no a/t (4 speed manual), slide type heater/defroster cables, no cruise control, a basic bench seat, & only rwd not 4 x4. With 2wd & a 285 lb insulated semi-camper top mounted putting weight over the rear, it went surprisingly well through the snow with the skinny 195/75 size (I think!) real rear snow tires I put on it for Winter here in the north.
Yeah, prior to that Ford had a Mazda-built Courier and when they saw how many people would buy a smaller truck they jumped in and designed their own Ford Ranger. Wish they still made some basic trucks now, something you can fix yourself and is affordable!
Thanks for the tour of your 620......My dad had a 1978 620 king cab (a big deal back in the late 70's) 2wd. Bright Orange with black fiberglass fender flares. 60 series Cragar aluminum wheels. Sunroof. A cap on the back of the bed. All the bells and whistles of the time.... Someone had loaded it up with custom parts and then lost it (probably a repo) and dad bought it from a local used car dealer that he knew. To a 14-year-old like me that truck was the coolest. ride. ever. It had everything but AC and when we moved to Florida.... a truck with no AC and an un-tinted sunroof.... well. It got sold off. Sadly, just months before I decided to head to college and could have used a good reliable truck......Oh well. (Maybe that's why all my Nissan trucks sit on super wide BF Goodrich TA's
That’s a great story, I’m sure those king cabs were pretty special back in the day! Everything about it sounds very 70's, especially the Cragar wheels :) !
Grandpa had a similar one back in the late 80’s just like it but in a lime green , that truck was very economical and reliable.
Growing up we had a '77 620 in Orange. The lime green was special, not many of those around!
Beautiful restoration!!
Sorry about your brother and glad it will be put to good use by his daughter!
Thanks! I'm so glad I was able to give her a new life.
I plan on buying an 86 i think it is Datsun/Nissan Sunrader camper soon. Cant wait!
It'd be great to hear your experience with it, jealous about getting the fiberglass Sunrader, those are hard to come by and very special!
@fourthgear8199 correction it's an 84. Still waiting on it but it's a "GO" as far as I can tell.
1980 Toyota Mini Cruzer 20 foot 2,0 4speed standard,, 15.5 per gal.
Cool! Thanks for sharing, I have a '78 Toyota Micro Mini 4-speed manual with the 20R engine, once I drive it a while I'll see what kind of MPG it gets.
You make me feel very good. Bought a 2003 Road Trek based on the Chevy 3500 Express with a 6.0 and 4 speed automatic in Florida and drove it home to Montana. Mostly interstate and got 14.7 overall.
Yeah, I think part of the point I was trying to make is that our Toyotas aren't as fuel-efficient as people might think; they are efficient, to be sure, but not amazing. I remember seeing some classified ads for Dolphins, Sunraders, etc where people claim they were getting 20-25MPG, and that is simply not realistic. I think your MPG's are great, and passing power is probably abundant!
Thank You for sharing 🙏👍🐕🦺🇺🇲
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Thank You for the Great Video 👍. Nice Dolphin Too!🙏👍🐕🦺🇺🇲
Thanks for watching!
Use Lucas Transmission Conditioner. It will smooth out your transmission.
Great tip! I want to do whatever so I don't burn up my tranny :)
Use Lucas Fuel Injection Cleaner every other tank of gas. It will improve your MPG. Good for the engine also.
The best I do is just try to use name-brand gas, which is supposed to have cleaning additives. I'm curious about the fuel injection cleaner.. I'll try it! Thanks
It's not "considered" overdrive. It is or is not - it all depends on the gear ratio
You're right! I'm kind of curious myself, I've heard people call it an "overdrive" gear and it feels like it but it might not be. I'll check the manual and see what the actual ratio is.
Hey thanks for video. We have a 1990 winnebago 19ft 3.0 w/ 5 speed manual We have recorded about 4,000 miles of records. We got 16.3 mpg average on long trips with as high as 19mpg. Around town for a couple trips we got 12-14 mpg. I got the best mileage when i could get it in 5th gear for a while. And stayed 60 and below. If i got above 60 mileage went down a bit. Cross Wind has also been my most significant driving challenge. Have fun
Thank you so much for sharing! I'm jealous, I prefer rowing my own gears, but manuals are rare.
12-15 mpg...
Cool! You do better than me; I can never get over 10MPG around town.
1980 is when the 720 series trucks came into existance. That's also when the name was changed as the tailgates said Datsun by Nissan, or Nissan by Datsun. They always were Nissan, however the name Datsun sold much better in the United States than the name Nissan. Once 1980 hit, that's exactly when the name Datsun was eventually eliminated and from then onward, it was called Nissan. After the 720 series, the D 21 series Hardbody took over, after the D 21 series Hardbody design, then the current day Frontier is now the new nameplate of the Nissan trucks, WHICH is a product of Ford Motor Corporation. Case in point, the Mercury Villiger is a Nissan Quest, and in 1990, the Ford Motor Corporation brought the Nissan Z engine off of Nissan and installed that very same engine in some of their Ford Ranger trucks and Mazda trucks.
Excellent summary! The "Datsun" nameplate came back recently in other countries, like India, I believe... not sure who makes those models.
Truck looks absolutely beautiful looking to me!!!!
Super nice!!
Appreciate it!
Not that I'm lazy. I just Don't want to do anything in regards to my rig. I'll hire it done.
I agree, that's why I opted to have it done, sometimes peace of mind especially when traveling means having a professional do it, especially on a vehicle I just acquired and you don't know its condition.
I have a 1988 Chevy G30 6.2 Diesel ex US Air Force truck with under 30K miles on it that I want to use for camping. I've put about 10K into it ! I'm sometimes sorry I ever touched it 😮
Yes, it can be daunting but if you compare the price of a newer RV it's hard to get into anything for less than $75K and all of a sudden spending $10-$15K on something doesn't seem so bad. RV'ing and vanlife are expensive habits, sad to say! Good luck with your rig, it sounds like it'll be amazing!
Reminds me of my current situation. I bought a 94 b150 for 2k 2 years ago. So far, I've spent nearly 10k rebuilding and replacing the whole thing. It runs like a dream now. Love it!
That's dedication! You'll get a lot of miles out of that!
@fourthgear8199 yup! I do fishing trips from Dallas to Galveston twice a month. Zero issues.
Where yo have the converter
You mean the AC to DC converter? It's underneath the sofa, next to the tank. That's also where the fresh water tank and water pump is.
Good information, you were very thorough.
Glad you liked it
wait… 4wd 620?
Yes
Beautiful 🙌🏼
Thanks! She made it in one piece.
Badonkadonk bro 😂❤️
If they made little trucks like that again everyone would buy one.
Especially if they price them affordably!
Those Dolphins are gutless.
I really like that description. Most people understand that to mean "having very little or no power", which is true - it only has 151HP and that's a very low power-to-weight ratio. I looked up the actual definition and it actually means "lacking courage or determination", which, if the Dolphin was a person, would be antithetical, since it's been all over the country, from Seattle to Miami, the two farthest points in the continental US. But I really like words (as you can see in my thumbnails) that have different meanings than what people expect, so I really like this word, I'll probably use it in a future video. I appreciate you watching!
ENJOY following your adventures I have a 1985 toyota dolphin, i dearly love. safe travels
Appreciate it! More roadtrips in upcoming videos.
Sorry to see that bro people are ruthless. Your truck is still beautiful is it a stock 4wd 620?
No, the 620 was not offered by Datsun in 4x4. It was first offered as a 4x4 in the next generation, the 720. This one was converted by a SoCal company that did a few of them back in the 70's.
Lovely looking Toyota truck. Why was this truck not offered here in the USA? I don't get it.
Back in the 90's Toyota decided that the US needed a truck made just for the US and the Tacoma was born. Up until that time the Hilux was the Toyota most countries received, and in the US we only knew it as the Toyota Pickup or Toyota Truck, no special name (like the Camry, Corolla, etc...) The Hilux is the Toyota most other countries see whereas the Tacoma is only for the US market.
@@fourthgearchannel Okay.
@fourthgear8199 Okay. Fair enough. Depending on what country it's sold, you can get a truck with a Toyota d4d turbo diesel engine.
Sorry to see that man them old dutsun pick-ups were pretty cool. I always like the Subaru brat more though
Yeah, I like those too! We used to have a 1978 Subaru Wagon 4x4 in our farm when I was little, not a Brat, but related. They're cool!
It's funny how people are selling original trim parts and pieces for these old Toyotas online, asking insane prices, and the parts and pieces are just as faded, damaged or busted as the ones you already have.
We had a LOT of fit issues on parts billed as "OEM Genuine", some were unusable and it's why it took so long to finish the 4Runner; there were a few we just couldn't make work so they were just returned and we had to try again.
Thanks for Sharing!
You're welcome, hope you enjoyed it!
@fourthgear8199 yes, especially since I hope to be doing the same sometime soon!
nice rebuild.

Bring it up to Prescott. I know these trucks pretty well.
i remember seeing one as a kid new in a toyota dealership in marietta GA in 87 or 88. it was red w bronze graphics w bronze factory wheels w a 5 speed and black interior. i feel in love!
What did you actually fix???
Head gasket, entire front suspension (pitman arm, CVs, ball joints, pitman arm, etc..), shocks all around, new bumper, paint, numerous trim pieces, rear main seal, driveshaft seal, radiator, H29 pump, other mechanicals. It would show context if you watch the other two videos from this project.
She's pretty sweet!
Jaxkzzz truck😮,Toyota..
Immaculate 👌🏼
Very cool. Great idea using the 720 tank. 80-86. I may run a d21 tank on my 1970 when I do engine upgrade.
The 720 gas tank is a great replacement! We're still dialing in the fuel gauge because when it shows "empty" there's still like 2-3 gallons of gas left.
Truck looks absolutely beautiful looking to me!!!!
Cuando quieras cambiar el carburador le puedes poner un WEBER 32/36 ese carburador es muy difícil de mantener el nivel de gasolina a veces yo por eso lo cambie .
Thanks, that is something we might do in the future, it's a great option!
Nice fix. I have the same issue on my 1989 Slumber Queen. Do you have a link or more info on the replacement springs ? Thank you and I enjoy your channel.
I show the part number, when I got it I got it on eBay but I cannot find the listing for it anymore... sorry
@@fourthgearchannel Ok, no problem. I may just remove my springs and take them to a auto supply shop and see what they may have that is similar then. Thank you for taking the time to reply. 👌👌
