THANK YOU!!!! This has been driving me nuts. That 'clack' was so annoying.
I'm a little late to the suaree but I first heard piccolo bass from Marlowe DK. He does some amazing stuff with one.
Pls do samples Sir .. That will so much appreciated Sir
Thanks for the video version
Do you know anywhere I can go to hear the exercises played? I can count out the easy ones (quarters, eighth notes, etc). But getting to the ones with a lot of rests and more complex rhythms I don't quite know if I'm getting the right result.
@@maxjones2008 That’s a great question! Although there is not a recording of the exercises, you can step write them into a notation program like Presonus’ Notion and the program would play them back perfectly.
@EverythingBass that's what I kind of figured. I'll give it a shot. Thank you 👍
THANK YOU SO MUCH, I always heard that on cliff, steve harris and Geezer butler Bass lines but I couldn't emulate it, It sounds so cool!!!!
@@uffreferenciasbrasil I am so glad this helped!!! Happy New Year!!
Thanks Dale, I enjoy your channel. I have a question for you - hoping you can help. One of my basses is a G&L L-2000 and I love it. It's set up perfectly and I just put a new set of Ernie Ball Regular Slinky (45/65/85/105) set of roundwounds on it but there's a problem. The E string is WAY louder than the G string. I've been playing bass for 40 years, I know the obvious - that because of the thickness, the E string will be louder than the thin G string but this is way beyond. I'm wondering if you can think of any reason why it's like that and what is a possible remedy? I was thinking of purchasing a different set of strings - one with a thinner E String and another with a thicker G string but that's now 3 sets of strings for 1 bass! It get's expensive! Please let me know? Thanks!
@@samhelsel443 Hey Sam! You can try lowering the pickups nearest the E string and raise them so they are closer to the G string (angle them). A little goes a long way so make a slight adjustment ment and see if it helps.
I purchased the book last year its great!
Awesome review, gonna grab a copy
Great review of the book. I finally got it after years of going back and forth. Very excited to dive in
Instant sub, this video's is highly underrated
@@sijmenvanrossem5667 Thanks so much! Let me know if you have any questions!
Yuck. There's nothing bass about that thing. Might as well just get a baritone guitar, and leave off the two highest strings.
@@V.is.for.Vae.Victus That is definitely an option! Have a great day!
@EverythingBass You as well. It is interesting for sure, definitely not for me though. I'd rather go the other way, and play a contrabass tuned down at E0.
Less talk more playing
@@BrandonMalone-x1b I am sorry about that. I try my best to fully describe what I am doing so not to discourage beginner bass players by going too fast. Have a great day!
2 of my favorite artists play the piccolo bass: the late, great Wayman Tisdale and Julian Vaughn.
@@Freewarrior2 Two greats, for sure!
I've had this book, and actually played trumpet with the funk brothers, who were brought back into the spotlight by Alan Slutsky's tireless work and dedication. One of my CDs is scratched beyond recognition and I'd like to teach this to my students. Does anyone know how to get the online audio version?
Thanks for the video, I've been a guitar player for years and starting to learn bass and this was driving me crazy. lol
@@johnnysix7162 So happy to help!
Are there any 6 string piccolo basses? Would be pretty funny
@@risaadthemerchant5142 There are, but they tend to be pricey.
Wait isn't this like a 4 string guitar then? Or did I miss something? Like isn't bass octave lower than guitar and this is again octave higher so back to guitar?
Fantastic review on a great video..👌🏾
@@briansamuels7782 Thanks!
When you slap with the thumb (thumping) do you strike the string at the angle similar to how you induce the clack when doing fingerstyle? ie kind of 45 degrees away from perpendicular into the fingerboard?
@@Mochimatchamocha Great question! Yes, I usually strike with my thumb as you described. If I am doing the “down/up” thumb technique I will strike the string more across the string, with my thumb moving more parallel to the bass body. I hope that makes sense.
@@EverythingBass yep, thanks.
I've also had this book for decades and have recently started working with it again. It's a great resource. Thanks for sharing.
Love the lesson. I've been clacking too hard for way too long, time to take a look at improving my right hand technique as I'm getting older :)
Very informative video 🤘
@@argiebass Thanks, Argie!
cheers, mate! 🎉 definitely thinking about it. been looking at basses, plectrum banjos, and ukuleles. thinking now about a violin bass with piccolo strings
@@sheridansullivan5783 That would be an awesome piccolo bass!
Thank you for this, tone is my problem !
@@audreygiamlayhoon I am so glad you found this video helpful!
Any brian bromberg albums you can recommend with a piccolo bass
Thank you
I have been following your channel, since bass in 2 minutes lesson. Thank you for sharing yo I r knowledge.
Sound wisdom. Thank you.
Again, thank you! I wish I could learn exactly how lightly I should be plucking. It seems like the players that get very distinct ghost notes and dynamics appear to pluck super lightly, but I have a hard time keeping volume and intensity even when I pluck super light. I’ve learned on line so I have no one-on-one instruction.
Exactly what I was looking for as the clack was driving me bonkers
2:50 that flex was absolutely insane 😳🔥
Thanks!
I have a Danelectro Hodad bass that I converted to a Piccolo . . . sounds very cool with Lipstick pickups!
I bet that sounds KILLER!
@@EverythingBass Yes, so much fun!
Thanks for this! New subscriber here. Do you have any tips for removing the clack from recorded bass in your DAW? 😎
While I do not know a way to completely remove it you can probably find the frequencies where the clack lives and us an EQ to de-emphasize them.
I just set my Hofner violin bass with piccolo strings and having a lot of fun. As I sing my own songs is great to comping myself with chords 👌🏻 thanks! Do you agree with piccolo strings sound better in a short scale bass?
This Is the way to resurrect my basses.. i'll go piccolo!!!!!
thank you so much for this !!! 😭😭
Reading about Joey from Manowar's bass brought me here. Great video.
Another video of you play3,please? I don't know how I missed this one!😯
THANK YOU. This has been driving me insane.
inb4 8 string piccolo bass
Thank you for the excellent explanation.
Wonderfull Video. I have a few questions. 1. What are the gauges and tuning of the piccolo bass? 2. guitar E, A, D, G? 3. Also for 4, 5, 6 string basses? **I have a 6 string tuned with bass E, A, D, G, C, F, with gauges 100. 85, 65, 45, 28, 22. 5. Is there someone doing higher than F? maybe Bb? These being bass tuning/octave lower then guitar. I'd appreciate any feedback.
Hey David! Standard tuning for a piccolo bass is E A D G, and octave higher than a standard bass tuning. I use D’Addario EXL280 Piccolo bass strings, which are 20p, 32, 42, 52. I have never experimented with a 6-string piccolo bass so YOU can teach me!
Why is no one commenting about the fact that he is playing a short scale Warwick bass? 😍
Stanley Clarke slaps on piccolo. Therefore, COOL.
Great simple tip!!! Thank you for making this video!
Do you do private lessons or help people if they’re struggling? I’m like a newbie here like touched a bass last week for the first time newbie 😂 I’m going to watch your scales videos now I don’t own a bass right now but I will soon
Hey Brian! I am not teaching private lessons right now but if you reach out to your local music store they usually can recommend a great teacher. I also highly recommend Scott’s Bass Lessons online. Amazing teachers and great content for beginners.
Just started formal bass lesson my bass teacher recommended your videos
Would making your string gauge heavier to increase the string tension also alleviate some of that clacking?
I believe it would help but the best way to eliminate the clack is to change the angle of your plucking fingers.
I've been playing solo acoustic gigs on my Alvarez acoustic piccolo basses for about 15 years now - because I also suck at guitar! It's that whole pick thing. I don't like a middleman between me and what I want to play, lol.
