Welcome. This channel shares my interest in retro fishing tackle, traditional methods, enjoying the outdoors, and getting back to basics with my fishing, although I’m no expert. You can visit my website, theretroangler.com where I publish a monthly blog, sharing my appreciation of vintage tackle, the places I fish and methods I use.

Ey up piscators, this video was filmed on April Fool’s Day at Robinwood Fishery near Swakestone in Derbyshire. The rod is whole cane and has snake-style line rings, the reel is a classic, British-made centrepin. A lovely setup for an early spring day. Vintage Fishing 10’ Shakespeare Omni-Match Rod & Daiwa 1600X Reel
มุมมอง 92810 หลายเดือนก่อน
Ey up piscators, this video includes a rod I’m pretty sure I had as a teenager. A 10’ Shakespeare Omni-Match float rod with a black foam handle and black whipping with a red line either side of the line guides, which I recognised amongst a job lot of several rods I saw for sale locally. I bought my original rod from Belper Fishing Tackle Shop for around £70, which was a lot of money for a teena...

Ey up piscators, this video is some of the vintage reels, rods, and tackle I've come across over the past few years which I thought I'd share with you. I still have some of this tackle, and other items are now enjoyed by other piscators in their own retro angling. Merry Christmas, and a happy new year. Tight lines in 2024. Vintage Fishing - Idle Time, Not Idly Spent
มุมมอง 159ปีที่แล้ว
Ey up piscators, I didn’t take my camera to do any filming, I just filmed this on my phone while I waited for a bite, enjoying the surroundings, the outdoors, the sounds of nature, watching the water, and I wanted to share it. The temperature was comfortable, the wind was gentle, it was quiet, and it reminded me; that it’s not all about catching fish. Thanks for watching and feel free to like, ...

Southern Comfort Cruise Up The River Bure Horning Norfolk

Ey up piscators. This video shows a river cruise on the Southern Comfort paddle boat from Horning in Norfolk. The cruise up the river Bure included a jazz band, which was difficult to hear over the sound of others on the cruise, so I’ve dubbed some music from Mogo Mogo on TH-cam, Jazz Music #1 and 5. Vintage Fishing, Carp on 10’ cane rod & center pin reel
มุมมอง 4.6Kปีที่แล้ว
Ey up piscators, after some inspiration from In The Edge With Alex, today I’m fishing a 10’ Army & Navy cane carp rod and Strike Right Aduraflow De Luxe center pin reel at Robinwood Lakes Fishery. It’s a Bank Holiday Sunday and quite busy, so I listened to some classic cricket commentary to drown out the sound of anglers on their phones. Ah, the sound of leather on willow. Vintage Fishing Strikeright Aduraflo Deluxe Reel & Cane Rod August 2020
Just seen this. A lovely Avon style rod but its really meant to be used with a centre pin, hence the position and size etc of the first ring. I still use my cane rods now that I bought in the 1950s. They were very expensive even back then costing me up to £8•00 about two weeks wages! The thing that really struck me though was how small those roach were. I fished the Broads regularly in the late 1950s and they averaged about half a pound, one and a half pound ones were common, you'd expect one or two over the pound each session. Good luck.
Thanks for your post, very interesting. I would have normally used a centrepin reel with this rod but I'd not used the Ambidex for a while. Some years when I've fished the Broads I've had some good size roach. This year the rudd were bigger! Thanks for watching.
I was planning on fishing for tench from my old canoe with a pin or course.
Great idea, thanks for watching.
Still got the same reel, and had a nice 9lb carp out the stanton canal on a shakespeare alpha match, blue hollow glass with the cheap wrapped cork veneer handle, the venerable omni range from shakespeare served us poor 80s teenagers well.100yd of 3lb omni match £1 from D A Wrights on cotmanhay road. Well, thats me pocket money gone! Luckily , Stevensons tackle on Notts road would sell us a quarter pint of maggots for 20p... happy days
Yes the Omni range certainly did serve us 80s kids well. I remember buying a quarter or half pint of maggots as it was cheaper. Happy days indeed.
I use a split cane rod that my dad made in the late 1950s with an Allcock Aerial centrepin reel. Good vid.
Sounds a lovely setup, thanks for watching.
Great vid, what fishing's all about, and right in my back yard too, Thanks Retro
It's a lovely part of the world and a pleasure to fish there.
These things look like they could last forever
They probably will!
I ran across several Mitchell reels in the last couple of weeks in estate and garage sales. They were in great condition and were dirt cheap.
A great find. Some of the first Mitchell reels I bought were in a job lot.
Hi fellow traditionalist fisherman I’ve just bought Altex No3 and a hardey marksman cane
Excellent, the Altex is a lovely reel.
Epic I collect most old vintage nice to see
Thank you.
Is that the pride stretch?
Yes it is.
@@theretroangler5494 Cheers have just joined the club
@@stevesmith9015 I've just got the canal ticket and I think there are 12 miles of canal you can fish and doesn't get fished that much. See you on the bank!
@@theretroangler5494 I will hopefully try the swarkestone stretch in the next couple of weeks
I still have my Garcia 300 bought in 1974.
Excellent.
Nice collection. As a collector, I love to see the old reels and canes. I do have some Alveys and a lot of Mitchells, as well other good brands.
This was the only Alveys I've had and never used it! Thanks for watching.
I just ordered an old Hardy Goodwin reel. From what I read it’s a centrepin reel but now others are telling me it’s not. Any chance you’d know?
En esto consiste el estar pescando:en incorporarse a la naturaleza.
Makes me want to go fishing!
Thank you for watching.
Join the club Phill😁
Top dangling Sir.
Thank you for watching.
Superb, and with a proper quill float too.
Thank you for watching.
Lovely set up I love using my split cane rod and allcocks centre pin and a nice place to fish the rain this year has been non stop, don't you just love the fight on a cane rod you can feel it all the way through nice chunky mirror good Angling 👍👍
Thank you, yes it’s been a wet winter. Great to be out with cane and pin!
Se requiere una caña es} pecial para un carrete Center pin?
@@juanmanuelbarragantame2468 No any rod is fine but I prefer a longer rod with a center pin reel.
I love my Mitchell reels ,I went on ebay to buy a spare and ended up with over 60 . I have modles from 300 to 840 match and I always carry 4 in my box I usually fish with a centrepin now.
Wow, that's a lot of Mitchell reels! I have just 4 or 5 now and I also Like to use a centrepin, especially with an old cane rod.
Love the fishing video....and the cricket on the radio....my kind of fishing.....cane and centrepin...😊
Thanks for watching.
💕Wow💚💚💚💚💚💚🤍
素晴らしいコレクションですね🎉
You can't beat some roach and bream fishing this time of year lovely rod and reel excellent condition really enjoyed the film many thanks
Some anglers aren't keen on bream, but I'll happily catch them all year.
Had me one of them rods. Thank you
Something I noticed when I used it for the video was how all the action is in the last 2 feet of the tip section, which I don't remember when I had one of these rods as a teenager. I do remember losing more fish than I caught and I probably bumped them off with inexperience, oh well!
クラッチレバーは切ってるのですか? (逆転して使うのですか?)
The clutch lever is engaged, yes I do you use it in reverse sometimes.

i love your sense of nostalgia. keep going!
Thank you, much appreciated.
Where are these waters with no ripple on them ? Out here in the Fens it's always blowing a gale.
Lol! I think the Fens are very open, whereas this fishery is very sheltered by the Derbyshire hills. Thanks for watching.
Pure angling comfort food. Thank you for sharing and inspiring
Thank you for watching.
Great apart from the gonk with the drain pipe exhaust! I still have a 410 but someone took it apart and lost the anti reverse bits! (Nope not me) it still works 🙂
I try to fined the quiet places, but there's sometimes a fly in the ointment! One of the great things about Mitchell reels is that you can have some bits missing and they still work a treat.
I had an Intrepid Roller in the mid 60s. One of the first reels to have a roller bale arm.
Interesting. Thanks for watching.
Very well done!
Cheers, thanks, it was a good day.
Well done! Nice variety of fish. All the best, mate
Thank you.
🎣👍
Nice Perch!
That's a lovely set-up and a nice days fishing all the best Russ
Thanks Russ.
You can restore the Cardinal polymer spools by smearing Ballistol on them, let that sit for a few minutes and then polish it. Will look like new again...and stay black and water repellent for a while.
Thanks for the tip.
Penn is best
There's something about a centrepin...
Definitely
The Lucky Strike! You are going to love that rod. I know I do. Paired with the Intrepid Supreme. A perfect match. Looking forward to watching you flicking out a bunch of maggots with it. Tight lines and happy holidays
Yes keep a look out in 2024, tight lines in the new year and happy holidays to you too.
What a lovely serene day by the canal I have a couple of Mitchell reels myself just love using them, looking forward to the next video merry Christmas and a prosperous new year All the best Russell 👍

I hhave several Mitchell Match 440s, 410s, 300s and 206's. I got one of the new 300s 2 years ago but I still prefer the old ones.
Yes I much prefer the old Mitchell reels.
Not exactly Montauk, but very relaxing all the same. Many thanks. Raymondo.
I assume this is the T & M canal again but what area please?
I’m at Willington, just south of Derby.
cool video Retro A i like fishing gear from the past and carnt stop buying it liked your video on reels when i take my old yester year gear out and the younger gen looks in horror and then in confusion when i catch a big one
Thanks for watching. I too get some confused looks from people, however, most people are interested in the old rods and reels I use, especially older people who often have interesting stories of when they were younger.
Caught my 1st 1lb roach at Horning on holiday in August 1972.
It must have been an important catch to remember the month in 1972! It's a special place and I caught my first pike in Horning. I have caught some nice roach and rudd there, although none of a pound.
Love your channel!
Thank you.
Brilliant video, a lovely looking piece of water, tight lines....
Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed it.
