Modern coal hauling on an N Scale model railroad layout
มุมมอง 4.6Kปีที่แล้ว
This 9 minute video features a CSX unit train with bathtub hoppers, rotary couplers, an operating flood loader and dumper, and Appalachian scenery. More info in the credits. The same layout has older coal hauling technology featured in this video: th-cam.com/video/4bRfFLmFUO4/w-d-xo.html The rotary couplers and draw bars are the sketchy part of this setup; with 23 cars I get a derail or two whe...

Osmo upside down and with AFC
มุมมอง 9733 ปีที่แล้ว
Turning the camera upside down raises the viewpoint to slightly higher than cab view. I used Movie Maker to flip it upright. The AFC (constant focus) behaves a bit better, less likely to focus on the ties a few inches in front of the camera. Seems to add minor tilt issues though and the camera has to be about 1/8" farther forward to clear the flat car.

Using reading glasses to focus closer on an N scale layout
มุมมอง 8993 ปีที่แล้ว
Using an SQ11 camera the closest focus is about 1.5 feet. By using lenses from dollar store reading glasses you can focus closer, but sacrifice sharpness of distant objects. The lenses were removed by clipping the frame. With N scale they have to be cut smaller. I taped with masking tape to protect from scratching and cut the lens with a razor saw. Polycarbonate is tough stuff. IMO 2 diopter sa...
N Scale Weigh Scale
มุมมอง 1.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Operational weigh scale on an N scale railroad layout. Weighs a train car by car as it moves slowly over the scale track. Primary components are an Arduino, 100g load cell, HX711 amp, 2-line LCD and IR photosensor - see credits.
Kickback track
มุมมอง 3.9K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Empty cars are pushed off the dumper and roll down hill. They continue up the kickback track, then back down through the switch to the empties tracks. The switches on the prototype are spring switches, but this one is thrown by an Azatrax D2T-3W that uses infrared sensors to drive a Peco PL10 twin coil switch motor.

A Polulu 488:1 gearmotor, item 3497, works well in combination with an Onyehn pulse width modulator controller (Amazon, allelectronics) and a 12vdc wall wart. The switch is a DPDT momentary contact center off switch (allelectronics). The gearmotor mounts with M2.5 screws. Note aligning the motor is harder than it should be because the pit's bottom is not flat. I used Aleen's tacky glue for a ti...
Rapido Railcrew remote HO uncoupler in N scale
มุมมอง 5K4 ปีที่แล้ว
I like Rapido's remote uncoupler. It uncouples better than my Kadee and neodymium installs, including under-track magnets that swing up and down to enable and disable uncoupling. But there is an issue with steel-weighted cars and steel-framed locos: when the uncoupler is off, the magnet poles lie directly under the track and pull rolling stock around.

Moving coal in N scale - operating flood loader and rotary dumper
Hey Kevin, I really like the way you smoothed out the ride of the turntable. Would you possibly remember the type of bearing you used for your modification? I will be using 2 of these Peco turntables and would like to avoid the squeak they sometimes make.
Switch the wires around
So nice I wish I could like it twice.
To frigging cool bi
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Been wanting to build an N layout since I was a kid. I have a bunch of equipment, but working 3rd shift 60 hours a week. I don't have much time for anything else.
Where did u get this from or it home made?
Calcifer 1 is a kit from Walthers. The turntable is Peco. The dumper is part of a 30-year-old kit from State Street Models. The animation mechanisms and everything else are scratch built.
👌👌👌👏👏👏👍👍👍🤓🤓🤓 Dankeschön
That's a great part of that N scale layout I really like that coal loader. And I like that CSX coal train that you ran what is that Locomotive I know it's a GE built locomotive the only way I can maybe know what it is the road number of that locomotive you see I have a complete CSX Roster Book and it's a good one it's in the early 2000s that CSX loco is in the colors of CYN 2 Colors of the early 1990s
Thx. CSX 9024 is Kato's model of a GE C44-9W, aka a Dash 9. More info on the model and the prototype is here: www.spookshow.net/loco/kato44.html
Way cool just cool.
Wow! That works vary well! I love it!
really cool. im new to model trains and I really want to do something like this eventually with actual working parts, did you buy the coal dumper/loader or did you build them yourself?
The up-and-over dumper is bashed from a kit that is long out of production. cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/p/264087/2980912.aspx The big mine is from a kit, readily available. www.amazon.com/Walthers-Inc-River-Mining-Company/dp/B000VZEYBU Everything else is built from scratch. The loader with the spring auger was the easiest to mechanize.
This was soothing to watch. Thank you.
Wow an absolutely amazingly amazing layout..
Hi Kevin what an awesome layout I'm planning on doing something with coal myself and something along the same lines (pickup and dump), I would love to see a layout tour from the middle of the room to get a better idea of how it is all layout please, watched your vids a number of times now and can't get enough of them :) Cheers Mark
The scenery looks good 👍
Wow this is a very nice RR!
Nice vid! Outstandingly impressive. I'm somewhat surprised you can move all of that real weight with a single loco.
Thanks! The loco is at it's limit pulling loads uphill out of Calcifer 1. One more hopper causes it to slip in place.
Wow wow wow!!
Amazing. Magnificent.
Awesome!. Great scenery and on multiple levels with plenty of functional interest. The working loader and unloader are amazing!
Could you show us more of the build process for this
I didn't take any more videos during the build. Is there anything in particular that you are looking for?
@@kevinguthrie5495 im a newbie but did you just modify a coal layout or build everything either way where did you get the electronics like the motors and maybe an augur also??
@@TiredDodMedia I built the whole layout from benchwork to trees. The auger spring is from the little drawers section of my local hardware store. The key is it has to fit very loosely in the polystyrene tube or things will jam. It happened to fit on the motor shaft very nicely. Gear motors are available on amazon and from places like servo city and pololu. I generally use 6 or 12v motors as the power supplies are easy to find. The lower voltage ones that run on batteries are annoyingly noisy. I think I got the foot switch on amazon. If you need to slow a motor down, the cheap pwm speed controllers on amazon work great.
Way cool!
Where can I get a functioning coal loader
I'm not aware of any on the market, you have to DIY.
That is absolutely the coolest layout I have ever seen! Your attention to detail is on a scale I can only hope to accomplish and your working coal shoots and that hump dumper are ridiculously mind-blowing! Congratulations on such a fantastic feat of model building, sir! My hats off to you!
Thanks! I sure enjoyed building it.
Awsome.. LOL "Invasive protomolecule"
Aloha. I agree. Both loading and unloading are very well done. If you did a video you woukd have no problem selling your tips and techniques. Well done.
Awesome, thanks!
This is cool.
Awesome job Kevin...Question- how wide are the top decks and what's the distance between each of the decks from the floor to the top deck? Thanks for your inspiration and knowledge!
Thanks! The layout has one level but the tracks against the wall are higher, 5' 4" from the floor. The width varies from 2' to much bigger. There is a helix in one corner and I can access track from it's center. There the edge of the layout is 5 or 6 feet from the corner of the room.
How are your cars coupled?
drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1SIWmoRcff7VnRwEFA116VVyNd2m4G-R5
Amazing!!! I don't think I would be able to build it.
Looks great, I didn't think it was possible to create a working coal installation in this scale. I'm very impressed.
Fascinating layout and an excellent film.
I love that coal loading thing!!!! Where did you buy it/how did you make it? would love to know and someday have one aswell. Cool concept of actualy delivering material!
The flood loader is scratch built from styrene and powered by a Tortoise. Made everything adjustable via the threaded rod and the square tubing that telescopes so the bins can move up or down. The silo is a scotch bottle container with a hacked funnel glued inside. The key is the "valves"; designs that have close-fitting parts jam. Another video may show them better: th-cam.com/video/QzmBQ4As_mc/w-d-xo.html
@@kevinguthrie5495 Sorry im a bit late on the response, but thanks alot! I plan into looking further into this style of model railroading!
Really cool layout. What are you actually loading? Black sand??
I've settled on Woodland Scenics fine cinder ballast which as I understand it is walnut shells. I've tried real anthracite (black lung risk) and black art sand used for sand painting. The sand is heavy and had particles that a magnet picked up.
Nicccccce
WOW, I am awed and amazed at what you have done. Such planning.
Cool video
I love this. If I build a rotary dumper I will probably follow your lead.
Terrific design work. Especially the repurposing of relatively common components. And to top it off this is N scale. Great job.
I am so impressed by how precise this is. You did a great job.
Amazing
Wow, very impressive, especially being in N-scale! You should be very proud of this project. Thanks for sharing. And you're right about Arduinos, they do have their place, but I can see a real "reset" nightmare using one if something in the system were to jam mid-cycle. What are you using for rotary couplers?
Most of the cars are connected by drawbars, two MTL trucks with couplers replaced by fishing swivels, orthodontic rubber bands, or orthodontic power chain. True rotaries are old trucks with Rapido-style couplers removed, carved up Fox Valley knuckles and a bit of Plastruct square stock, the kind with a hole in it. Hopefully this link works for you: www.nscale.net/forums/album.php?albumid=1658
Thanks for the info!!
Wow! That is excellent!
Awesome video and channel just subscribed. I model n scale too. Beautiful layout. Love the high trestles
I bet this was fun to build!
Fun is relative. Frustrating, lots of back to the drawing boards, but full of fun problem solving puzzles.
That's pretty cool 😊
I never saw such an awesome n scale layout . Thats neat .
Amazing layout, and I’m really digging the music!
Absolutely amazing! You need to figure out how to sell a system, you'll make millions!
