Making A $5000 Medieval Damascus Sword! | Columna Ignis
This was absolute EPIC project to create, I am super pumped with how this medieval damascus sword came out! I am calling it 'Columna Ignis', which when translated means "Pillar of Fire." This damascus pattern resembles that in symbolism of how the Word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double edged sword...
Tune in to this build to learn how I used a multibar technique in order to create such a blade, and then finish the project by crafting a traditional handle in honor of the legacy this sword holds in history. Thank you for tuning in, as always subscribe to stick around and see what's next! :)

By the color of the blade it wasn't hot enough, close but no cigar. And quench in oil. When you quench in water it boils around the blade. The air pockets kill it. More heat and use oil for quenching I
as a woodworker who makes his chisels, and a bushcraft enjoyer, you dont need pins.In a survival situation, i'd rather don't have to fight the pins.
Looks so cool! I just finished one simmilar altough alot simpler, could you call the blad ornamation an habaki?
Thank you! And that’s awesome! As far as the ornamentation that’s been what I’ve referred to it as (a Habaki) only because I constructed it very similar to how I would a Habaki for a Japanese sword. I’m sure there’s a different name for it though as the same style of collar is seen on a lot of Turkish blades and some middle eastern work I believe as well! Thanks for being here
Definitely need a mechanical connection just glue is not enough
I'll keep that in mind next time I craft a Japanese sword
Just beaty
@@Nst3204 Thank you! If you haven’t already check out the 15min full build video on my channel for the sword! Thanks for being here 🤙🙏
Respect
@@Nst3204 Thank you! Thanks for being here!
Awsome ❤... now you have the beginnings of a $2000 Scimitar 😂
did somebody say 𝓬𝓱𝓪𝓽𝓸𝔂𝓪𝓷𝓬𝔂
You truely have the most beautiful blade collars ive ever seen on a knife incredible work!
@@zaifn3669 Thank you! I really appreciate that; thank you for being here with me!
Now, cut the Tatami mats.
That thing is magical looking! That is true art😆
@@NolansKnives haha thanks man! Hoping to get it done soon 😅🙏🤙
Pin k pin clmm😮
Bend?
That curve though!
I'm not criticizing you for cause the customer wanted it, but danng that's a thick spine 😊
@@WetFireForge Haha thank you! And it definitely has a good weight and feeling in the hand; it’s still balance properly and centrally which I’m pretty happy with thankfully! Thanks for being here
That's too beautiful for a kitchen knife
@@asifhussain3515 Thank you; this will most likely be an art piece for display but I’m building it to be 100% functional for the customer, I can’t wait to hear what they think! Thanks for being here
Which episode of forged in fire? I'd like to check it out? Season and episode number preferably
@@thekailwolfsinshow8374 Thank you! It’s season 9 Episode 26
that wasn't a leaf spring that was a coil spring please get it right you may be a master smith but maybe try saying spring steel instead of calling a coil spring a leaf as that way people don't get them confused
didn't know you won forged in fire, good job holy
@@KL_the_artist_minecraft Thank you! Glory to God 🙏⚒️
Great work mate
@@hanma1921 Thank you! Thanks for checking it out and being here!
Would you be able to EDM wire cut a perfect fitting sealed piece?
@@eaglenebula9080 That could possibly be a method! My initial thought is that it probably would cost more than it would gain so it may or may not be a feasible option; if you do anything with it let me know how it goes as I’m curious. Walter sorrels actually did a video talking about machining vs traditional technique for these Japanese sword parts and the general conclusion is that it’s more expensive to machine them
Not in Water!😢
I watched this ep with my homie. RIP joseph
whaah, is that your homie? Rip for sure brotha
@@Soyboy_71 🙏❤️
is fun a Japanese man tell me that Japanese people considered any saber make be a gaijin no a katana only a Japanese master black smith have the right of call katana the blades he make any other y considered a low class blade like the ones used be the soldiers in ww2 only the important officers carry a katana
I stop watching the video cause you are shouting too much, you speak too fast and the background music is irrelative. Most people watch these videos to fall asleep, all those things are very annoying. Good luck
I watched that episode
Thank you! Thanks for being here!
Blade's name is Wakizashi
Lessons learned I hope.
Any 10 year old who's watched one episode of forged in fire knows what you did wrong.
Stock removal for me is defined as buying knife blanks online and then going looks guys i made a knife i dont mind it but i dont like when people who only do stock removal call themselves a smith because they arent they are knife makers but they are not bladesmiths or blacksmiths outside of that i see no problems with stock removal its still a knife at the end of the day but the difference between a bladesmith and a knife maker is the bladesmith forged their billet out even if they both did stock removal at the end of the day the smith made their own billet and maker did not
WOW! I can’t even describe how beautiful I think that is! You did an amazing job Ian and i’ve said it before but i’ll say it again you are such an inspiration to me! Your quality in everything you do from the craftsmanship in your blades and the entertainment in your videos, everything is on point! Well done! Also I love the intention for the sword being like the pillar of fire from the bible, that’s such neat and creative idea. God has truly blessed you with a gift and thank you for sharing it with us🙏🏻
@@NolansKnives Thank you Nolan! I really appreciate that, and glory to God! 🙂 I’m hoping to have the next video out soon but it’s taking a bit longer than usual to get this project finished! Should be a cool one though 🙏🤠 God bless man, - Ian
@ I can’t wait to see it!
crazy title 👀👀
im not a blacksmith or something but i think i should not be shaken
Try an old chainsaw bar. The alloy Stihl uses is perfect for knives!
Love that book
Canola oil😂..
@@Nursejea *Parks 50 😉
Even with being damascus and handmade $5000 is too much !!maybe if the damascus pattern was alot better
@@Nursejea I appreciate the comment; as far as the price goes make it yourself and sell it for what you will 🙂 God bless you
I find anvils so fascinating! They are almost addicting to research and I just want to buy them all🤣
Happens to the best of man! But did you learn something?? . Lol
@@BeastlyIronworks Certainly 🤣 this whole project was to better understand a new method of tile-welding for mosaics. The technique worked flawlessly! Just the result was questionable 😅
@IanZ_Forge however it wasn't a total lose, it really did turn out beautiful!! Well done
@ Thank you! 🙏🤠
For someone who doesnt work metal, what happened here and why?
The damascus steel that you're referring to that The recipe / way was lost in time was called woots. Great video!!!
Try 85-140 you will be amazed never get a crack again
DUDE!!!!!! NOT WATER!!!!😱
I do 'em even on my wooden katanas.
