Feel free to comment any questions! The red tide had been pretty bad the past few outings, and I almost didn't even take one cast this morning when I saw that the water was still pretty dirty. I am glad I gave it a shot because the striper bite was on fire! They only started boiling a few times, but it was the first time I had seen it in person. I threw jerk baits and topwater, but the fish onl...

Jacksmelt and Surf Perch Fishing - Santa Cruz, CA

Feel free to ask questions in the comments. The bite improved over the last week as the stripers leave for the winter. There are no signs of big perch yet, but they are on their way up the coast. The swell was larger than the past few weeks because of a small storm that moved through, making it difficult to land the smelt. I caught a few off-camera and lost at least 10. I had to switch to the C...

Surf perch fishing the bay when I hooked into a monster. I was using 25lb line and a small size 14 perch hook and was not prepared for whatever I hooked. It ran for almost 10 minutes, taking all but 50 feet of my line when the hook broke in half. I have caught rays exceeding 60lbs before, but this was MUCH larger. If I had to guess, it was either a massive batray around 100lbs or a fairly large...

Lots of Macs!! I'd rather see you on the shore, surf fishing. You need to hold the rod in front of the reel on the fore grip; not behind the reel. Where's the perch?
I would rather be on the shore fishing for surf perch but they are just not there. Lots of stripers but they are very picky and did not like any lures I threw at them. Any day now big perch should arrive! The sooner the better with this big winter swell.
@@Ducky2o I hope you're the Surf perch whisper and they will arrive in the surf soon. In hopes of figuring this out I hope fish and wildlife resources and research funding remains the same or are elevated in future years.
@ In the spring I was averaging around 20 perch per 3hr session. If the perch come back I will catch them! 😄🐟
@@Ducky2o As you know and can see the number of surf and surf perch Utube fellows has really dwindled is the last few years. That should make your videos very popular.
I hope people enjoy my videos as much as I enjoy making them. Some days are good and some are bad but that’s just fishing. With popularity on my videos, especially the one with over 100k views, there has been some haters but it is impossible to please everyone. Some people only want to see me reel in 50 lb halibuts but that is just not realistic for me. They should go watch die hard fishing not me if they want that😂. I know when the big perch arrive I will have some amazing videos coming out. 👍🐟
Catching baitfish and a dirty old stingray is not very good fishing 😂
I will catch 20 halibut next time don't worry
@Ducky2o l doubt that 😄
Me too
That mackerel is the best halibut bait there is. Also loved to see the old Fenwick. I have around thirty of them.
The old Fenwicks are hard to beat. The one I use is from my grandfather and I have caught my fair share of fish on it. The mackerels are extremely good for bait but the small ones are sometimes hard to find. The lingcod also love them! 👍🐟
Whats the fish reel ur using
I believe the reel I was using was a older model PENN senator 👍
It’s not really that big. CA is clueless.
50lb fish not big?
that looked like a big eagle ray? well done
Thank You! Yes it was a fairly large bat ray. It put up a great fight 😂
Just watched that entire video just to watch you waste time on a trash ray. Do better.
I appreciate your viewership
Scallops are a entree that many people like(not me) but that's the point..... lol, sting rays are often caught & they are cut into w/ a cookie cutter small round circle knife. The wings of the ray are used to make "Fake Scallops". I 1st saw it done in Key West, Fla way back in the day. When you catch one, grab the front of it's face on either side b/c they can't get their tail to strike you if you have hold near the mouth & that's where the hook is. Did you guys see the proximity of it's tail to your arms? Watch for it as it happens really fast but if you grabbed the front they can not get you as easy. Nice catch & I don't like their meat but lots of folk do eat them? Nice little trip. peace
its not rays that are usually faked as scallops. it is skate. But, maybe rays too, just I have never heard of rays being faked as scallops before.
Thank you for the information! I have heard that people eat them but I always release them back. The tails are very long and smack all over but the stinger all the way down can’t move very far. As long as you grab it’s front half, as you stated, it is relatively easy to unhook. 👍🐟
Yeah, I always released them as well but some cut the wings off & eat them. I've tasted it & it's a rough meat like some shark meat. Some eat it regularly but I wouldn't eat it ever if I had fish available. Also, they cut scallop Shapes out of them to fraud people & make more money off the ray/skates. Selling meat like that is illegal but selling rays for the scallops is another charge on top. Fish -n- Wildlife will get your arse if caught doing it. StingRay "stingers" might be short looking but it's hooked onto them where if it hits you it gets stuck. It's a serrated edge & has a slime type of bacteria that will not only hurt but it will make you sick. Steve Irwin got hit by one & it hit right into his chest. That little one might not kill but it's make you feel bad for days. IF you hook one, grab from the front wings & one hand takes the hook out - keeping the tail as far away as possible. They are fun to catch. peace
@@martinhill5881 The fraud guys will sell ice to Eskimo's man, they use a Sheepshead Fish & sell it as crab meat but the seafood industry does anything they can get away with. I mentioned Stingrays b/c I saw this done in Key West, Fla years ago. But they will sell anything they can pass off as a more expensive meat. They use shark as well but I've not seen this, I've heard they do it. I don't eat or like scallops but some love them & so I mention what I saw. It really only bothers me b/c it's cheating people out of their money = Stealing/Thievery or Defrauding to get money, I don't like. Be safe out there
Ever since Steve Irwin died from a ray stinging his chest, these creatures receive mad respect because no one expected it. Up until then, people viewed them as gentle. I know it was a horrible accident but it caused people to be more careful.
They are fun to catch but dangerous to handle 👍
I think Jeremy Wade also helped advance the cause of stingray awareness among anglers.

White Sea Bass, they make a huge first run

They always take a big long run initially. The lighter the gear the longer the run
Batray
@@br18od All the bat rays I have caught from the surf had wing flapping that I could feel, this had none. All rays I have caught also ran either left or right down the beach rather than straight out like in this video. If it is a batray it sure does not behave like one and must be well over 100lbs

@@bluguy5827 I had a half used box of braid but I knew it would leave the spool a bit low. @@CristianDanny-tt7fl The blue rod is a Hawaiian custom 10’7” and the reel is a penn spinfisher 4500. The black rod is a daiwa north coast 9’ with a penn pursuit 5000. I highly recommend the Hawaiian custom.
Throw the 115 Lucky Craft in Sexy Smelt for the Stripers. Heads up, your drag was set too loose and was spinning as your reeling, it's twisting your line, making wind knots more problematic.
I have never had much luck fishing jerkbaits for stripers. I have a few 115 realis’ and a 140 duo tideminnow. The perch and smelt love them but I have only gotten a few small stripers all year on them. I appreciate the tip about my drag I’ll make sure to tighten it. 👍🐟

@@davidmodena238 I am glad you found this video 😂. You are by far the best striper angler I have ever encountered while fishing the beach! I have not caught a striper since that morning but plenty of smelt and a few big perch. I hope you are still reeling them in!
@Ducky2o Thanks. Yes I'm still getting them but the window to fish have been shorter due to the recent large swells @Ducky2o
👏
Stingray indeed!!
Superb session and a cracking ray to finish it 👊🎣
I read the title and had to ask the question: who actually goes out and targets Jacksmelt? BTW, that Uglystik is a solid rod for surf fishing if it's 9 ft with medium action. Pair that with a Penn Pursuit 3000 and you have a setup that will rival any $500 surf combo for less than $80, and won't snap like many graphite rods will.
@@edcastillo4456 When the perch and stripers are not biting the smelt put up a great fight. The biggest I caught this year was 18”. Many people love to eat them but I release them all. Hopefully in the next few weeks the perch will come back. 👍

KEEP A TEE BAR IN YOUR BOX, FOR SUCH OCCASIONS.. MUCH SAFER AND EASIER FOR RELEASING LARGER FISH THAN PLIERS.. EXCELLENT VIDEO, STAY SAFE
Thank you for the tip. We never thought we would hook such a large ray!
I was expecting a huge southern stingray but that little cownose?! they are like bluegills and fight so hard for their size.
Here in the UK and European waters we have overfished....and decimated fish stocks for the last 100 yrs. We still allow commercial drag fishing (along the sea floor), which I find deplorable. Slowly the UK waters appear to be recovering but, giving licences to foreign operators is not helping this recovery.
Tug of war. And you won. I'll get you next time ;o)
Was that a better catch than the jack smelt? Any ideas on why so many jack smelt? Is that Sunset? Ron
This was at Manresa as I have never had much luck at sunset. As I have only caught one rod and reel I will say it was better than a jacksmelt 😂. I think the perch must for some reason drive the smelt out. Possibly they eat all the food. As soon as the perch left at the start of summer the smelt came in. I keep hearing early November for perch so we will see!
The good o’l kastmaster. One of the most reliable lures. 👏 What a rad day!!
You Americans are so lucky you still have huge fish like this, in Europe we not alone have almost no big fish - we have no fish left at all.
Is there lots of big carp in Europe? Most European fishing I see is either pike or carp.
@@Ducky2o yes we do have big carp and other freshwater fish, but not many places mostly privat preserved sportsfishing waters. carp is not really native to Europe and considered an invasive species some places. Our ocean is totally destroyed we only have pelagic fish left that visit from the Atlantic like mackerel, herring some tuna etc. But all living at the bottom and coast are gone. No cod, flounder etc. Just sad just 20 years ago I still caught a few cod and more flounder. Had not eaten a self caught cod or flounder for 10 yr and I fish 100 days a year
I mostly fish for sea bass and sea trout this year's catch is around 25 sea trout biggest 55 cm and 3 kg around 20 sea bass biggest around 60 cm 3 kg. That's for like 75 days of fishing average 4 hours. Pathetic and I have acces to perhaps Europes best sea trout stream though they are small there are many
That is a shame that the fishing in Europe has declined so much. In the US, especially in California, the fishing regulations are pretty strict. Most rivers are only open a few months out of the year and most fish in general have a bag limit of 1-3. I imagine this helps keep populations good but sometimes it seems excessive for the casual angler. I release 99% of the fish I catch in hopes to not watch fish populations vanish. I hope you have better success in the future. 👍🐟
@@Ducky2o yes very sad. I have always been wondering why. And I think it's because in Europe we have not capitalized sportsfish spicies or sportsfishing at all. It's almost free for all our politicians have never seen the economy of it. Also we have no game wardens, in my 40 yr of fishing I have been inspected once. But also the biggest problem is agricultural runoff of nutrients. I seen you also are starting to have algea problems in the USA I will just warn you. 104 of 109 danish coastal areas are in very bad condition 1/3 of our ocean are with no oxygen at all. Beware of your agricultural sector.
