Does Ghost in Shell Arise Arise to Expectations?
มุมมอง 46114 วันที่ผ่านมา
Welcome to another one off everybody! I've been feeling like watching Ghost in the Shell for a while, but of course wanted to cover something more obscure than one of the most well known anime productions of all time. As such, I've embarked to talk on the, somewhat controversial, Ghost in the Shell Arise prequel. Is it good? Is it bad? How is it as a member of the Ghost in the Shell Universe? A...
Ergo Proxy Explained, and Why I love Ergo Proxy! Full Ergo Proxy Retrospective

Hi Everyone and welcome to another supercut of a previous retrospective, and this one will be on one of my favorite series, the oft maligned Ergo Proxy. While some might hold the series to be a pretentious and depressing slog, I will attempt to prove why it isn't and is actually a beautiful tale of rebirth and endurance. Please enjoy! Welcome to the full Version of Wrestling with RahXephon, an in-depth retrospective on one of the oddest obscure animes out there. Hi everyone, its time for the "theme component" of the RahXephon Retrospective. I would assume the reason the blue are not able to be killed off with sheer force is birth rate, growth rate, and the ability they possess to rapidly evolve to new environments and change their biology to defend themselves. It's clear earth had high technology we don't currently have but still are beaten at their strongest point with all logistics still in place to manufacture new equipment easily. It would be logical to assume that because of overwhelming number of blue on the planet the few humans left in space wouldn't have the logistical capacity to commit the resources needed to even get a project started. You'd need a supply chain so long and complicated that the few people that are left wouldn't be able to maintain it. Each point of the chain would have to be secure enough that it could safely produce whatever resource at that site, then transport them safely to wherever they need to go over and over again til you have whatever the finished product would be. If they did manage to make the bases the loss of any single resource shipment would be extremely detrimental and the loss of any base could end the entire supply chain. It's one accident away from failure.

    "Engaging" is truly the best way to describe this show. Absolutely agree with you that one does not need a PhD to enjoy it, because the show presents a series of philosophical ("religious" would've been a better word here) problems into stories and engaged the viewer to sense the dreads that the characters were going through. How often do we hear philosophers discuss the topic "Do we really want the truth?" in such an understandable way? I would go as far as saying that the pretentious ones are not the production of this show, but the philosophy PhDs. I loved the way you pictured the 3 main character as a family and how each one of those matured during the journey to mosque. Although, saying that the show is about 3 young adults achieving enlightenment through their own efforts would've been a disservice to a very well crafted story like this. The entire plot is really about the struggle of reconciliation with the truth and who Vincent truly is. "What was once divided must again become whole."

      @@obscureanimememories6697 there is somehow a connection between the two, If you pay attention to all the episodes of Blue Gender, all the Clues are in each stories. Did you notice in both intro of Nausicaä and the First episode of Blue gender? The style is shared among the two, as i did my research, There were one of the staffs from Blue Gender who also worked with the production of Nausicaä. It will be a long reply, Castle in the Sky wasn't proven to be a Prequel to Nausicaä since it lacks evidences and the timeline doesn't formulate the Story, But unlike Blue Gender, The story is much plausible to account. It is also believed that Yuji and Marlene are the ancestor of Nausicaä, it is hinted that they had a baby at the near end, maybe in ep 24 or 25. Lord Yupa also Mentions that most countries are already swallowed by the toxic jungle, there's also an episode in Blue Gender where the United States of America is already infested with spores. Bear in Mind that Blue Gender takes places by 2031 - 2032 and Nausicaä is already 1000 years into the future, Likely happened after that. Edit: I have of course read the Manga of Nausicaä and it's also implied that the insects are part of Failed Biological experiments that toxicated the environment and the whole planet, in the epilogue of Blue Gender. The insects were also revealed to be a Man-made insects which is the same Goes to the Ohmu.

    I like to think that Schwarzwald is simply a narrator. Big O is, effectively, a play. You can see it even in the intro. Everyone has a role, and has to play that role. You have the detective, the butler, Dorothy as an android and, ultimately, a supporting character, and Roger as both the negotiator and effectively a protagonist. Schwarzwald habitually shows up to narrate the current events as they're ongoing, as if he's either the writer of the play giving context for anything that's happening, or else a narrative figure explaining current events. It both explains his presence in the story and his metaphysical presence as seemingly ethereal voice. In a way, this doesn't disqualify him from being a prophet. When you write and narrate a store, you know how it'll end. He's both god and king of this world. Maker and master. Everyone's a pawn to his story. I'm not claiming to be 100% correct in this theory, but if I am, it's a masterpiece of writing.

    Marlene character development arc was way ahead of its time. She didn't change overnight, but I am confused when she still get a lot of hate after the series ended. I am disappointed that there is no more continuation from other media except the anime. Coming after I finished claymore at least I can continue reading and get a satisfying conclusion

    • @obscureanimememories6697
      @obscureanimememories6697 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I had never heard about people disliking Marlene until now and I thought her arc was great. The only thing I can figure is that maybe some people didn't like Yuji and so disliked her for saving him, or maybe they disliked the fact she was kinda the main character for a stretch of episodes near the end. One of the tragedies of these more obscure 26 episode productions is that since they are produced on such tight time tables with such limited resources, what you get is all you get. It adds to the mystique of such things, but it can be irksome and does contribute to a lack of finality.

    I don’t ever rewatch it for the same reason I don’t rewatch Psycho Pass. Because I’d enjoy rewatching SAC a lot more. In SAC, the Major falls flat compared to Batou and Togusa when all characters are given some time to be explored. Especially those final episodes of SAC when they’re fugitives. The Major is just another one of Masamune Shirow’s Mary Sue characters. I respect Arise’s attempt to make her a flawed human character, but I feel they went a bit too far for a character that’s meant to be a war veteran. The film feels like a more balanced character, just but impulsive, determined but curious. I could say a lot more, but it would just be praising SAC.

    • @obscureanimememories6697
      @obscureanimememories6697 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's a great point of why Arise isn't as fondly remembered as SAC or the movie. Even if its good or even great, its not as good/great as what came before it. Someone might like all of them, but with the finite time we are afforded, why would someone watch the less good version of something? I have to agree with this as even though I thought Arise was great fun, I would still rather re-watch SAC simply because its all around better. In this way Arise kind of suffers from the fact its an entry in the Ghost in the Shell universe.

    Re-L is also a "failed" attempt at cloning Monad by the powers at Romdeau (to 'get' a purpose back, since their demiurge/god left them). Deadalus "made" her. That's why she looks like Monad (who is Proxy One/ Vincent 'Pair', or companion, like the two proxys at war Vincent stumble upon.), was adopted by the Regent, and also looks like the Monad 'perfect' clone. Also all the people (artificially grown from vats) ARE sterile. It adds to their feeling they have no "raison d'être"/purpose, and it adds to the proxy feeling the same, because they "failed". (But not really since their main purpose was "fixing" the Earth to make it inhabitable again for the people who fled through space, after which the beings left 'behind' seemed to have been meant to all die to make space for the people who came back. One big issue with the show is that much of this was simply infodumped in episodes such as the jeopardy one. It was not well shown in/through the story.

    • @obscureanimememories6697
      @obscureanimememories6697 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I never realized Re-L was a clone until commenters pointed it out to me. I think her status of a clone does tie into the themes of the tale very well as she a "failed" being goes on to make her own purpose. And yeah the exposition is pretty rushed/arbitrary at times and I think this is a result of some indulgent writing. Sometimes Ergo Proxy gets so focused on its ideas and philosophical talks, it neglects more concrete aspects of storytelling like world building.

      @@obscureanimememories6697 Yupp, thinking like this is more logical to me and because of it I observed the point-of-view herding by the writers as a kid watching it on Animax. Why are B-cells in humans? If not for internal collapse engineering by Gaia if the humans will not make the mutant-horros weapons that it subverted. In place of hot lead, cold iron will do just fine. Gaia is the last barricade to human evolution in the series. Maybe natural, artificial or both.

      Yeah, I got to agree, and I think its why I am biased against the rebuilds (its fine if people like them but I could never quite buy in). If either the original series (plus end of Eva) or the rebuilds existed in a vacuum, it would be fine, but the fact they are part of the same franchise is still weird to me considering how different they are, at least in tone. Now I understand there is some potential real life reasons for the change in tones (Anno admits that getting married "mellowed him out" and he's in generally much better head space since marriage) and so the rebuilds can be seen as a sort of extension of Anno 'rebuilding' his world view into a more positive one, but again it feels like that should have been a completely new franchise and not just a new Eva.

    This was a really genuine and very pleasant series of videos. I'd never heard of Rahxephon outside of it's mention/inclusion in some Super Robot related material I saw. I never thought much of it, but hearing your thoughts really makes me want to check it out. Once again I appreciate that you don't hyper fixate on the negative like a lot of other videos. It feels sometimes like people are very eager to write things off as either terrible or fantastic. The fact that you go over that it's flawed, and even frustrating at points, but it still has artistic merit is really refreshing. I believe that kind of approach leads to more genuine, and ultimately more enjoyable, discussion around things. Thank you for your hard work! I'm excited to see go over in the future.

      Thanks for watching! I started this channel to do work just like this, getting into the details of series some people, but maybe not many, might remember. I Love getting into the details of things, even if they are not perfect, because its fascinating seeing how and why things ended up being the way they are. Its fascinating to try and comprehend art even if its not the best simply because the point is the humanity put into it and not just "good or bad". Its important to distinguish between objective and subjective and realize that "good/bad" is not the same as "interesting/uninteresting" or "high effort/low effort". Its ok if you don't like an objectively good series and its also ok to take interest in a very objectively flawed series, because part of interpreting art is not only trying to see what is being said, but also interpreting yourself and your own views on various concepts.

    I've always found it funny and interesting that in SRWs, Big-O is one of the featured mech that gets to interact with all the other series that has similar themes about existentialism. The Super robot series might be colorful but they have always been bleak and grim hence the existence of mighty magical robots powered by the infinite will of the pilot and some "dark energy source" that resembles the concept of nukes. Even with Go-Nagai's Mazinger series, the mech genre has always been dark and that humanity has questioned their existence against the vastness of the universe. Getter Robot would also have the same theme of building power only to cast or create what would be a universe eater. The influence even reached the more "realistic" mech animes like Votoms in which there is a super AI capable of managing an entire galaxy or Gundam in which humans through robots and wars will spell humanity's reset once it reach the peak of human evolution amd peak of technological innovation paved by war. Even Metal Gear has these themes albeit more political. I think Japanimation in itself respects the dreams of a future full of powerful machines that can make the work in our life easier. But such power can be daunting to the hands of the imperfect humanity. The discovery of Nuclear energy is testament to this and Japan itself. There has always been an anti-war and anti-nuclear messages in most of these mech animes. And while Big-O only has this as a plot device, the same concept remains where when a time comes that a big machine weapon becomes a necessity then the world will be meeting its end.

    • @obscureanimememories6697
      @obscureanimememories6697 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its ironic that the mech genre, one on the surface focusing on mechanical constructs and inorganic technological progress, often tends to be one of the most human as it, by examining how people use and interact with technology, holds up a mirror for us all. Technology doesn't just exist in a vacuum and how people think about and use it greatly reflects their own nature and that of humanity in general. It really is both beautiful and freighting that no matter how much changes we are all still humans at the end of the day.

    One thing that occured to me watching this vid is, did Ayato and Haruka go to the same school or not? In the after credits scene where we see them meet it seems like they don't, but earlier in the series I think its mentioned they did. Small point, but I think indicative of the lack of forward thinking by the writers.

    • @obscureanimememories6697
      @obscureanimememories6697 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not sure, but I think they did after meeting the first time on the island. Its another small detail that is inordinately important when we zoom out and, yeah, is indicative of a lack of tight planning. I feel like the series would have been better if there was either a lot more planning and streamlining, like in a conventional series, or just none at all, like a true art piece ignoring all logic and going in even more truly weird and abstract directions. We could have either had a much more coherent or much less coherent show and I feel both would have been more interesting than what we ultimately got.

    I think timbre is pronounced with a flatter “a” sound, like the “a” in Baben. At least that’s how I reconcile with it being a French word that I can never hope to pronounce properly. Pronouncing it like “tamper” sounds appropriately American. Also fate can also be a positive theme. Where instead of the struggle being about coming to terms with a cruel fate, the struggle can be about improving oneself in order to accept an important fate and the responsibility that comes with it. Probably in the format of a coming-of-age hero story.

    • @obscureanimememories6697
      @obscureanimememories6697 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a good point about how someone can be assigned an important responsibility, and this in turn can shape them for the better as they work to be able to see to it. I still don't understand RahXephon's viewpoint on fate. I think the series does want it to seem like Ayato is running from his duty to re tune (his fate) and coming to accept this as he matures. While this would strip him of some agency (as it essentially forces him to re tune and limits his future options), if it was readily apparent this was needed and more was done to show Ayato run from duty, it could have worked. But instead alot of Ayato is dedicated to figuring out who he is and what he wants, only for him to go along with other's plans anyways and essentially reduce himself to a tool. It seems like the series is stepping on its own toes here. I don't know, RahXephon makes my brain hurt sometimes.

      Thinking about it, the story definately qualifies as what I would call an "idea salad". It doesn't feel like its mostly the creation of one individual imagination. It feels like the ideas came from a large group of writers, and then the director selected which ones he liked, and merged them together in a very clumsy way.
