It didn’t really horrify me I was depressed while watching it A month ago So I was more or less intrigued by how awesome it was And just how relatable it was for me during a scene with Shinji Thankfully I’m myself again after I finished watching it in 4 days Now i love evangelion and I’ve watched the first 2 rebuild movies
I'm glad your feeling better! I think Shinji and the character dynamics in general really set Eva apart from the rest of the genre and it really is notable how human the cast is. No one is perfect or even really wants to fight but the fact that they try to and some how get through things is a central draw of the show. Even though it is uncomfortable from time to time, so is life, and I think that that is a real unique quality of Eva.
I wouldn't call Eva a psychological horror piece. I've always seen it as more of a commentary on human existence and how we form bonds with each other and ourselves.
That's very true, and I understand why it isn't necessarily a horror piece (or intended to be one). I just happen to find some of the sheer discomfort manifested to be horrifying.
*claps* Congratulations! Excellent video, yes there is so very much talk of Evangelion on this site and beyond, but so often they will simply talk about the characters and their views of the characters that it is really just an occasion for people to talk about themselves and use the show as a vehicle to promote their own narratives. You however talked about the cinematography and editing, the things that elevate Evangelion to its lasting high position within the sphere of anime. This video reminded me a lot of the series Timberw0lf Studios is doing on the show and that is an excellent series so good work! Mecha fighting aliens that do not communicate is an old trope and Evangelion really plays with it, extending this mechanic to the entire cast of characters. The battles with the Angels seem more and more like social interactions, and talking about the hedgehog's dilemma early on really underlines this entire theme. Perhaps the increasingly hostile way the various organisations interact is the closest the actual plot gets to expressing this theme during the original series' run. This perspective helps me define why Utena is such a good companion piece to Evangelion, as perhaps its central theme is improper closeness; people falter in relationships, seeking intimacy in the wrong places or in a wrong way. While everyone in Evangelion is ultimately alone and miserable, Utena shows us how miserable people are in relationships, or in misguided attempts to enter them. (Yes im a fan of both Utena and Evangelion and talking about how the two are connected is my favourite pastime.)
Thanks (I Love episode 26's conclusion) ! I've always been hesitant to speak on Eva since so many have already looked at the series in extreme detail, and I didn't just want to re hash character analysis that have already been made and proven insightful. This led to to see why the cast as a whole make me feel how I do when watching Eva (that is often mildly uncomfortable) and this in turn helped me zoom out and create this video.
Awesome video essay, just one small gripe: Ramiel isn't a prism as she doesn't have any orientation with a consistent cross-section - she's actually an octohedron :3
I finally understand evangelion people mention hedgehogs dilemma but i never understood it from only not understanding how it applies to the characters like toji and shinjis failed friendship, etc and the other characters. I think the only healthy relative relationship in the show was Gendo and shinjis mother to be honest.
Gendo's relationship with his late wife (and his and her motivations) fascinate me. I know both are probably both left intentionally vague, but it would be cool to get details on it. Seeing as Gendo is a very anti-social (perhaps lonely) man, I could see him marrying Yui both to use her and out of some genuine emotional attachment. While Shinji is the main hedgehog, Gendo is quite a hedgehog himself.
this may be your best video, bc you kept me captivated & had me eating out of your hand! I haven't seen or heard of anybody that honed in on this specific aspect of the terrefying nature of the communication in Evangelion. Usually it's a sidepoint to elevate something else. I was a lil nervous of watching this video, bc i don't have a great relationship with NGE, but I plan on rewatching it with an openmind. So I thought this won't hurt, & this was great!
Thanks! I've always known that I wanted to talk on Eva one day, but was unsure why or how. Even though I like doing detailed analysis, There has always felt to me like Eva has a very important and big picture frame and I'm glad I finally figured out how to zoom out and what I wanted to focus on.

finally, a good evangelion video essay.
Thanks! I was a bit intimidated talking about such a famous work, but I'm glad it worked out
Younger me should have never thought that every mech related media is child friendly
I've been there! I still remember 5 year old me being allowed to watch all kinds of stuff because mom thought "all animation is for kids".

High quality, and well written video
Thanks! For years, I've wanted to speak on Eva and have finally been able to do say what I've always wanted to about it!

I can't believe I could make such a colossal blunder! I will make sure to personally apologize to Ramiel!
Great video one of my favorite anime

I like Neon Genesis Evangelion but the final episode sucks.
