Just a girl in Northern Alberta who is in love with the hiking life, kayaking, camping and so many other outdoor adventures!
Kayaking the Desolation Sound, British Columbia, Canada. Part Four, Final Episode
We woke up to another beautiful morning on the Cermie Islands. The waters around the sheltered islands are very deceiving as to what it is like on the open waters! We knew because of the high winds expected to roll in, that we were going to have a really big day.
We enjoyed watching some seals and leisurely paddling around the islands, before getting to the business of crossing two channels. Although the winds made it harder to paddle, and therefore exhausting us and eventually making all the muscles in our arms ache…I really enjoyed all the waves and the splashing and the bobbing up and down.
We made it back to squirrel cove without incident but very tired. We drove to a provincial park campground where we spent our last night together as a fun group.
Wild coast adventures put on a really great trip and our guides did a wonderful job of continuously pivoting, to provide us with the best experience given the weather conditions.
Would I do this kind of trip again though? Probably not. Perhaps I’d do a base camp style trip, as I didn’t realize how much work was involved loading and unloading the boats every day. But also, as an avid hiker/backpacker/thru hiker… for me personally this trip was lacking the physical satisfaction and feeling of pride I get from walking place to place. They are totally different and quite unrelateable activities, and while I love kayaking….i love backpacking more lol! I don’t say that to diminish this experience, only that it made me aware of where my heart is, and that I need to continue to focus on more experiences doing the thing I love.
Having said that, I absolutely loved sharing this experience with Nicole and it was a unique/wonderful way to spend my 45th birthday, and for what it was…I did really enjoy it 😊👍

We awoke to beautiful blue skies and No Wind!!! This meant we got to pack up and paddle!! What a blessing! Our destination was the Cermi islands, but instead of heading straight there, we took the shore lines, so we could get some good paddling in and explore. I had brought my original OZMO camera along, hoping maybe someone would be willing to take some video of Nicole and I…being a Vlogger, I...

It rained all night long, until about 4 am. It became calm and clear and we were hopeful that meant the predicted winds would never appear. Sadly by the time we got up and had breakfast the winds arrived and the waves grew. It became clear that we were not moving on, at least not any time soon. Paying for a kayaking trip to then not be kayaking was a bit of an annoyance. But also this born and ...

Just checked this video out, Thanks so much for sharing! Very helpful for me getting an idea of what to expect. I'm from Calgary and up in La Glace for Christmas! Love sneaking off to Grande Cache when I'm up here. Happy New Years :)
Thank you for your post trail video 😁
Thank you for your video and it’s very much appreciated😁
Amazing videos of the trip! A really nice memory 😊
Nice ending for your paddle. 🛶✅
It looks like a quiet peacefull trip. Even if it was more physical thank you thought it would be. It's hard work paddling in the wind and waves!
It was really nice. Next time I’d to the base camp style, cause then it would really be peaceful!!
@debraonthego3960 glamping is a big change from the PCT that's for sure!
Thanks for this video as it further motivates me to prepare for more adventures on the water.
@@cliffkelsey7631 your welcome!! I learned a lot about water adventures on this trip that never crossed my mind prior to the actual experience! Have fun on your future adventures!
Hello Debra, thanks a lot for all you videos! I was wondering what size is your catalyst, not the hipbelt but the pack itself. How tall are you? I am thinking about getting one but I am right between sizes and I have to order from the U.S. and I cannot try one before ordering.
@@Lee-otg I’m just over 5’4”. I believe my torso length put me in a small for the pack itself, if I remember correctly. Being from Canada, I had to order from the US sight unseen also… I had to put a lot of faith into their measurement system!! If you are between sizes, my recommendation would be to send them (Peter) an email. Peter is pretty amazing with his customer service and he will tell you which size to go with. I had to do that with my hip belts because I was always between sizes for them as well. Going with his recommendation worked well for me 👍 I hope you take that leap of faith and order one!!! I’ve loved my catalyst… I hope you do to!
Thank you 😊 I hike with my dog and I do need a new backpack, I really like the catalyst, maybe I'll order one, after talking to Peter. 👍🏻
@@Lee-otg hiking with my dog is the biggest reason I got the catalyst as well. It’s a great bag for accommodating the things we need to bring along for them! I hope you have a good conversation with Peter!
Well, maybe the octopi will start their own TH-cam channel 😁

That's very interesting, and sad, about the sea stars. I hope they figure out what's causing their decline. Kinda sucky that you were stuck there for a day, but it seems to have turned out not too bad in the end.
A Very Happy Belated Birthday Wish For You Ms Debra😊. So glad to see you posting again too☺️.

Hey Deb! Sorry you never got to really feel those connections on trail. Too bad myself & my small group decided to do a flip NoBo-SoBo- NoBo … I think you would have really fit in with us and three of us were also Canadians 🤪. Myself, and one of the girls actually became really close so much so right at the beginning, she broke her phone and had to go back to San Diego to have it repaired… I refuse to let her go by herself, because I just couldn’t imagine… So we both went back to San Diego and hung out for three days for that phone to be fixed before we got back on trail again. Another one of the girls who hiked with us once we got back on the trail, got injured last year and she’s planning on starting the whole trail over again and I’m also planning on going back but to start back at KMS going forward… even though I had already done the portion of KMS to lone Pine I had injured myself before KMS so the stretch stretch to Lone Pine was pure misery for me and that’s when I got off the trail… but her and I are going to be meeting and going forward together to the border! If you decide to come back out and do some hiking, and want to join up, you are more than welcome to link up with us!!
Joining forces with Leonie in NorCal (also a Canadian) was the best thing I have ever done! She’s my girl! One of my only regrets is I didn’t have her for my desert experience. But so happy I had the other half with her! I love for you that you had a great connection with your girls too!! Are you going back out this year? If so, I am SO jealous!! Lol! It’s going to take a couple years for me to get back out there… but I do see it happening!!
@@debraonthego3960 yes I am going back out late May to KMS and to “ hopefully” finish this experience.
“Checking out the geography” gets credit to Sunshine. He gave me a history lesson about when people visited a castle and needed to know where to go to the bathroom. According to Sunshine, the person in need asked the castle owner, “Do you know the geography?”, meaning - where is the bathroom in this place? 😂. Money Bags
Haha that sounds like a classic Sunshine tale! Is it true?! No one’s knows, but it sounds like it could be legit!! 😂
Lots of fun adventures in store for you this year! I’m really looking forward to seeing your kayaking trip videos. Gliding across the water along the BC coast sounds amazing. Hope you see some charismatic creatures! 🐋 Woodsy is also quite excited to be joining Pivot in Banff! 😃 Thanks Nicole! ❤ BTW…the CT is on my bucket list. Just sayin’ 😏

I’m blown away that with all you went through in the first half of your trip, you’ve come away with these life-long friends from the second half. Your plans for this year sound great AND plentiful for being new in a full-time job!
God is good!! For every hardship of the first half, I was blessed 10 fold in the second half. 😊. Perseverance and prayer!! I’m excited for my adventures this summer! I’m very blessed my employer, understanding how much time I “needed” off! Lol!
Sounds like some great adventures are in store! It'll get fun to see Woodsy and Desert Moon again too 😊 and when you learn rock scrambling, maybe you could plan to come east and do the AT 😉 I'll have to live vicariously thru you and all the other TH-camrs I subscribeto. I had planned to go out and do the East Coast Trail in NL, but now my dog needs surgery, (week after next) and that's taking up my travel savings for the next 3 years or so 😮 😢 *sigh*
Awe I’m sorry to hear about your dog Reba. That’s sad. I hope the surgery is successful 🤞🙏 The ECT is on my “one day” list as well!!
@@debraonthego3960 thanks, yeah fingers crossed all goes well with the dog. It's knee surgery and I need my hiking partner! 😅 So many trails...so little money!
Excellent presentation. I’m sure the residents of the facility enjoyed it…I definitely did.
Come on down to the beautiful East Kootenays to explore!
Like I have said before, I don't know who these people like they are to look down on other hikers, because they didn't complete a trail, or a long or short hike, like anyone else did or thought they should of done the hike. Unless you are going to work for REI or any other outdoor company, you completing all of the 2653 miles of the PCT. You should be proud of yourself, just as much as anyone who completed all 2653 miles. Because, now days no one can complete all 2653 miles step for step. You hiked your hike, your way and you should be proud of that. I don't think the people who hike 30 plus miles per day see the things the rest of of sees everyday.
Thank you so much for sharing! Your videos were beautiful and provided such amazing views and inspiration! Look forward to your future travels - from couch hiker in Calgary, Alberta.
Hardly anyone finishes the PCT in one year these days. There's always closures, usually due to fire. And sometimes, they have to go back more than once to fill in the gaps. Anyone who tries to shame hikers for not finishing is just rude 😒 🙄 You tagged both terminuses...termini?...Plus, as a Canadian, you're limited by the amount of time you're "allowed" to be in the US. If you're slowed down because of weather or injury, you're going to have to skip something in order to make it to the border to get home before ICE starts stalking you on the trail 😂 I love your podcast idea. I'm always questioning the status quo 😉 I think even Darwin himself would enjoy it! He's been challenging his own "influencer" status on his podcast. And Dixie is struggling for content because of her health. I feel for her! Post trail depression is a real thing! Sitting at a desk and living the 9 to 5 grind is just NOT NORMAL! Living our entire days indoors is a relatively new thing, considering human history. We started out as nomads, getting up every morning, hoisting all of our worldly possessions onto our back, and walking towards the next place to flop down to sleep. And stopping periodically for food and water. The only difference between then and now is we have dehydrated meals, and they had to hunt and forrage. And well...we have dyneema 😂 what society tells us is "normal" is anything but. I hate it. I'd rather be hiking 😁
I agree with you 100% on absolutely everything you’ve just said! Especially about how we were never meant to be stationary. There is a sadness in me that I don’t think will ever go away so long as I am being “forced” to stay still. I need to win the lottery so I can just hike all the time 😂
@@debraonthego3960 ah, you and me both sister! 🤣
It really is amazing how each person can have such a different experience and perspective on a place! I agree the Aqueduct overall was not that incredible, especially after the initial part with the canals and pipe was over. I enjoyed the rest of that stark desert section once we got in to the mountains. Maybe I have rose colored glasses though since I just edited my footage of it and I was in a better headspace and physical health at the time I was there. 😊 I have heard that some people do not feel well near those large windmills. Unfortunately it seems you’re one of them! 😕
I enjoyed the mountain section a lot more then the aqua duct too, it would just be hard to get into that area without hiking the whole thing - hence why I suggest skipping the entire thing. There was another guy I was hiking around that day going into Tehachapi and he started to feel sick, in the same way as me, around the same time as me, and we both couldn’t figure out why. It took me along time to figure out it was the turbines! Most people I talked to weren’t affected by them at all, but yeah they made me feel really ill!! Once I put my headphones in, I started to feel better! Lol!
@@debraonthego3960 fair point! Yeah hard to hitch it to the mountain section past the aqueduct with the wind farm there. I guess our experiences weren’t that different then. Just no queeze from the giant fans for meeze. 🤪
Yeah, that siesta thing doesn't work for everyone. And I guess it would also depend on your start date. Later in the spring and it's just too freakin hot, so Ive seen a few who sleep all day, and then hike all night in the dark! Did you ever find out if that bear got rescued?
One of my biggest pet peeves is the “experts” or the well knowns telling everyone that they MUST do something. It saw it the other day, that everyone MUST take a siesta. That just grates me lol! Cool do it if you want too, but know you can totally not to do it and still stay alive 😂. Literally every single common belief about how to thru hike is complete BS Imo! Haha! I didn’t ever find out. We asked a group of guys headed back to town to call fish and wildlife to get it some help, but we will never know if they did or not. It was really sad so I try not to think about it too much
@@debraonthego3960 influencers gotta influence 😉

😂. He does that all the time!!! It makes me smile 😊
10:22 “I HATE peanuts!” Favorite trail snacks: Snickers and peanut M&Ms. Well played PCT. Well played. 😂😂 I guess the Gummy Nerds were the palate cleanser then? 😊
😂🤷♀️. One eats what the PCT tells you to eat! I wasn’t going to argue with her 😂😂
That's really cool that you can switch out the hip belt on your pack like that. Brilliant idea! I really wish I was like you and so many other hikers I watch, and don't have to worry about food! My biggest concern is always food, I have celiac and a bunch of other intolerances. I know I'm going to have to send boxes when I do the AT. Unless somebody comes up with a cure between now and then...😅
I think if your just going to be a normal couple times a summer backpacker the hip belt thing isn’t a big deal. But In a thru hike imo it’s absolutely necessary. Unless you like wasting money on a whole new pack 😂🤷♀️😉 You may have to send yourself resupply packages the entire way. I think it would be really hard to trust that there would be something you can eat in the small convenience/general stores!! Break out the dehydrator!! Lol!
@debraonthego3960 that's a lot of work! So far my longest trip has been 14 days (with an 8 day food carry at the end! 🤪) I dehydrated a lot of my meals. I can't imagine dehydrating for a 4 to 6 months trip 🤣😳
17:50. Highly recommend the Senz storm umbrella. I've bought 3 so far, and unless you want to always have two hands busy(forget about trekking poles) do not settle for less.
If I was you, I would setup a face to face meeting with the boarder / government agency, to make sure you are cleared to travel back and forth across the border or any other borders in the future.
34:06. I think I can answer that, because I looked it up for someone who asked about it on another channel. "If you return to the US, your departure will be automatically recorded at that time. If you don't return, you should just keep evidence of departure including, but is not limited to, entry stamps in a passport, transportation tickets, pay stubs or other receipts." I got that from the CBP website. So it was good that you returned, because at that time you were declared departed and returning at the same time. That can be a big problem even if you are not using the PCT permit. Another TH-camr I watched a few years ago, finished her six month hike. She then got picked up by her parents who took her back to whatever province they are from. She then got her car and was driving back to her home, when all the flooding in BC forced her to detour back across the border. She didn't go into a lot detail on what happened but she did say that she got detained at the border for a long time. They wanted to know why she was over on her stay and trying to return again. They finally released her, and told her to return immediately to Canada by the most direct route possible. As for why as a Canadian you should get the PCT Canada Entry Permit. I think you need to do that to keep from getting in trouble with Canadian Customs, for not reporting your entry. Though I have heard stories of both Americans and Canadians hiking across the border without a permits, and not getting caught. But you should do that only at the risk of great legal problems, and the possibility of being banned from crossing the border in the future. I guess it depends on if you want to take that gamble or not.
enough wood to keep you warm in the winter :)
One thing to note about start dates is you're pretty much at the mercy of the PCTA and the permit they give you. And the later in the season you start, the more likely you are to have to skip or detour due to wildfires. I keep meaning to look up the stats, if they exist, of how many registered thru-hikers actually get to hike every mile each year, and how many end up missing sections due to closures.
Even with the PCTA permit, you get to choose your own start date. They don’t pick it for you. Having said that, you are at the mercy of what time you are allowed in the portal and what other hikers have chosen/what dates are left. I don’t know the stats either but it’s becoming less and less common for pct thru hikers to hike every single mile in 1 season. Personally I think that’s a good thing though… I think the hype of doing it all in one go for the fame or the bragging rights has really eroded the true meaning of being out there. IMHO.
@debraonthego3960 I think that is probably dying down some on all of the long trails. Thank goodness. There was a huge boom, post COVID lockdows, and a whole bunch of interest in the outdoors for a couple of years, but the shiny has worn off now, for all but those of us who are actually serious about it. Registrations on the AT are down considerably this year over 2021 and 2022 at any rate. I don't pay as much attention to the other 2 trails tho. Hopefully, by 2028, it'll be back down to pre-pandemic levels, and I won't have to put up with too many crowds 😉😂
@@musingwithreba9667 numbers were down on the pct in 2023 as well because of the epic snow levels. Many people just didn’t bother to go. And those that did, we were all so scattered around that it rarely felt like there were a lot of people on trail. I have a feeling if the lack of snow continues this year 2024 will be BUSY!! Lol!
@debraonthego3960 the snow probably did keep a lot of people away. Except for the truly crazy ones 😉
Pivot, I loved your presentation of your PCT journey. You shared your inner soul in addition to the trail. This video is a blessing. Thank you, Money Bags.
Thank you for sharing.
Bravo! Great heartfelt presentation about your personal journey on the PCT! You definitely have talent as a communicator and storyteller and you got the makings of a good book here. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Thank you Woodsy!!
Side note...if you find your self wanting to hike Oregon at all this season...I will be there! 😊😊😊
I will keep that in mind! 😉😊👍
Thank you thank you for posting your presentation!! I laughed, I cried, I got even more realistic about my upcoming hike. So so grateful you have been put infront of me! ❤
Are we friends on Facebook or Instagram?! If not we should be. I’d love to be able to cheer you on and offer encouragement through the rough patches! ❤️
What a great presentation You're a good storyteller. This again solidifies my desire to *not* hike the PCT. 😂 I watch so many vlogs from it, and nope, I don't think it's one that I want to do. Maybe a LASH thru Washington, but the desert just does not appeal at all. I hope life in the Matrix is being good to you, and you continue to pivot as needed. 😊
Haha I think it’s great that you know yourself and know it’s not for you! The PCT or thruhiking like that at all is definitely not for everyone! I don’t think you’d regret a Lash through Washington. I didn’t enjoy it in the moment but looking back it really was a beautiful state!! Thank you for being a part of my journey all this time! ❤️
