Jackson's Haul Swatching: Roman Szmal and Schmincke (+Some Case for Making Watercolor)
For those of you that did not see my post the other day about the future of my channel, I will be taking break after this video. Due to issues with long covid, I need to conserve my energy and TH-cam was one of the first things on the chopping block. I like to think that I can do everything with my normal amount of energy, but it's just not possible anymore. I'm hoping the break is not permanent, but I can't make any promises at this point. I'm leaving all of my videos up on TH-cam (and there are lots of them--lol) so those will still be available for the foreseeable future.
Things I mentioned I would follow up on in the video:
The dry time on the Schmincke oil paint was about 2 weeks to completely dry--a bit less for very thin areas.
And the CFM indigo is lightfast! I was very excited to hear that.

Wooow❤❤❤❤i love vintage watercolors🤩
hi great video! is the label inside the case made of leather?
Very interesting pocket pen.
Thank you for this information. Hope you are fully recovered by now.
I just ordered the green glass model 02 Vanness collaboration from Vanness Pens in July 2024. I saw someone's unboxing video a few days ago and thought it was a recent release, so I raced to order one. They were out of fine, but the rest were available? They advertised only 75 per batch. Did they do more batches since this vid? Idk, but it's coming Friday. 😍
I have the exact same pen with a stub nib, very smooth and lovely writer.
Can’t find it at the moment but I watched a video where the guy, after filling the pen and replacing the nib section, didn’t quite completely screw it down before loosening the back end. He then tightened both down and the pen worked on the first try. I don’t have an Opus 88 or any other eye dropper so take that for what it’s worth.
Found it, it was from Goldspot.
What kind of case is that?
Do you have any snap journals? Like Austin # 10? Nice collection of covers Thanks for sharing. Me
I almost always dip the nib in the bottle to get the ink flowing.
I find the vintage 51 superior in every respect. There is a reason why these pens, some of them 60 years old, are still going very strong even today.
A Parallel nib with highlighter ink would be a great idea.
I love this idea so much!
I’ve gone back and forth about buying this palette…I love them, but I normally paint at home, so it doesn’t make sense, but it is so tempting!
@@JessicaCEP you can always just use it at home.
W and S are impeccable QUALITY art materials. They will feel different, they are not mass made they are HANDMADE with all sorts of wonderful ingredients from nature. TOP TIP The watercolours need thoroughly mixing on a china palette using warm not cold water to thoroughly work them in. The iron plum will seperate in to the two colours that it is made from in a wash. At full strength it is a gorgeous brown damson dark that is hard to describe and do it justice. It is helpful to GENTLY agitate that ink before use. Sometimes I will gently stir with a clean stick, but I find gentle aggitation enough. Not too much shaking as you will get tons of bubbles. A lot of their pigments are granulating these are best on a rough watercolour paper. The paper you use is really vital. I use hot press smooth for the ink, but will experiment with any quality 100% cotton watercolour paper. The logwood ink has many depths of browns, purples and even green in it. Very exciting to work with. You can also purchase W and S ANCIENT GUM ARABIC which has honey as one of its ingredients. Add a FEW drops of this to your painting water and it will reactivate them. Not too much or they will go shiny and horrid. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER BRAND OF GUM ARABIC FOR THESE as it is NOT the same binder. As you say you have a different climate where you are. Dried tubes I just cut open and use as pans. Hope these hints and tips are useful. Thanks for sharing your grounds and experiments. You are very lucky to be able to get hold of this media from your art shop. It REALLY is very special. No two batches will ever be the same and that is the beauty of them. ENJOY. Any more information, experience and thoughts out there on WS please share! Thanks for starting the conversation Mystery. Xx
If you like Ocean Paper, you will LOVE the Shinhan Pass hybrid paints., as I find them similar, but Shinhan is more versatile IMO. The PASS are opaque when applied masstone, but transparent when watered down. Many of the colors granulate or have a bit of texture.
What a beauty! Can you please tell me something about the ef nib? I have a ef sailor pro gear slim.. is this wider? What about the grip in long writing sessions? Slippery ? Thank you my dear Lady.
Hi there. The TWISBI EF nib is definitely going to be wider than that on the pro gear slim. Sailor's nibs generally tend to run finer than other nibs. I personally love the grip section and don't think it is slippery. However, if you don't like the feel of small ridges on your fingers, you might not like it (they are barely noticeable during writing, but I know some people are sensitive to that sort of thing.
@@MysteryArts❤thank you, really kind! I simply adore the Sailor ef nib feedback, so I’m tempted by Twsbi but still not convinced. Let’s see… as I need a daily “barrel- full“ of ink now.. this seems to be to only possible solution!
I really love your videos. Thank you for this. They are incredibly beautiful inks.
Does the palette stain?
Might try a good single malt to lift your spirits. Family is a mixed bag.
The Sign pens are no longer available. I have a Benu and would love the wing sung converters but the link doesn’t work. Do they only have one type?
Folks just LOVE their swatching...!
Oh they have many interesting colors!
I’m so loving your new crafting obsession!!!! You will be offering these up for sale ❤❤… am I right? I hope so, they are so lovely and completely adorable 🥰
3 years later…how are you liking your m300?
Thanks! I was pretty frustrated by how much difficulty I had getting mine to flow. This shows I wasn’t doing anything wrong. It just takes a bit.
I have the Palladium nib. It is wonderful. I like ink windows, but I would not want one interfering with the beautiful look of my Bronze Age.
Thank you. Just received the Techo and am also experiencing scratchiness… what did you decide on? Smoothing?
That’s the plan, but I haven’t gotten to it yet given my health issues.
@@MysteryArts i pray you feel better soon. 🙏 I reached out to another youtube friend and she indicated that she hasn’t experienced any scratchiness. I am going to reach out to the retailer and see if I can exchange the nib and if not will contact Esterbrook directly.
Thanks for a great video that summarizes and explains the function and looks of each style.
TH-cam is starting to freak me out. I just got the new A1 with the Fine nib. I filled the cartridge but forgot to dip the nib unit in the bottle. I came back with the pen and here you were, on autoplay. I guess TH-cam thought that I didn’t know how to fill it. 😂 I like Medium and 1.1 mm stubs so I was holding out for a medium. I will probably have to get the real thing for that. The Fine is 0.5mm vs 0.4mm for extra fine so it probably isn't worth the upgrade for most people. I got the black with gold trim. It looks like I spent a lot more than I did. You have to love that.
I haven’t smelled anything odd about the Fountain Pen Revolution pens. They often have sales, and if you have any problems, be sure to reach out to them as they are very responsive. I love their ultra flex nibs!
what is the deep green smaller pen you've used in this video?
That is a Franklin Christoph 45 model.
@@MysteryArts thank you! 😀
I have modified the Pilot parallel nibs with sandpaper, very easy and doesn’t take long..
Sounds very cool. What kind of modifications were you able to get with just sandpaper?
I know this video is from 2 years ago.. I use the Pilot parallel nibs in Opus 88 demonstrator pens. The nib fits perfectly and you have a huge ink capacity of almost 4 ml.. I have a few of these pens for my urban sketching.
I tried the opus 88 and the nib kept getting stuck and had a hard time removing it-but perhaps that was a quirk of the particular pen I was using. I know a lot of people have success with the opus 88 and pilot parallel nibs.
Decided to try a couple of makers. The parallel fits snugly into a Walltown Pen Oslow model using the whole feed!
Good to know!
2:54 pilot *spare* sign pen
I agree Jacksons has the best prices. I had filled my cart for their current Schminke sale. Then I saw the cost if shipping. $20 pretty much canceled any savings 😢 I moved on. I thought they had a US warehouse to ship for sales on their US site. Apparently not with $20 International shipping costs. I was ready to drop $150 on paints. No free shipping, No Bueno. They're going to charge me the same price as a $40 sale? 😢 Every other site offers free shipping on larger sales.
I just got the Taccia ink in the Dark Indigo shade. It’s a great ink, like most Sailor inks, but, it’s pretty much the same as the other Sailor blue black inks I have. Not sure why I was expecting anything different - and the box sure is pretty, but I wish I’d gotten one of the lighter blues.
😂
"This is a calligraphy pen. It's hard to write with." xD Just write a bit bigger and hey presto, it's like a smaller pen. Except bigger! Or on a huge piece of paper. Then it'll be tiny writing! Except fun!
Hola, una pregunta. Existe la posibilidad que el nib encaje en el Pilot petit 1??
I haven’t tried that one, so I can’t say.
This Liliput is made of copper, not brass
Meh on Michael Harding... they tried but didn't seem to do a great job.. For the price - I'll just buy Daniel Smith - a known brand with a ton of support!
I wish I could try out this de atramentis document ink, yet Canadian Amazon , wants $ 75.oo for 35 ml.... I bought 2x Platinum ink for $20 cad each ...$40 total ...and now i have ink for days. I am still trying to figure out , which of the inks, that noodlers makes that is water proof and fountain pen friendly. Have you tried out *Deleter Manga Ink* Marker & Water Proof Extra Black Ink, Matte Black, 30ml/Bottle, only $16 cad
From my experience, Troublemaker Pertichor is a very dry ink that changes every smooth nibs to be feedbackish. I guess that's why TWSBI ECO B nib weren't smooth in this video.
I know this an old video but wanted to comment what a beautiful collection you have and also say thank you as I learned a lot from you about different vintage nibs and also changing nibs out. I have a number of Esties but I also love my Jrs and feel they are under appreciated by the FP online community.
Thank you! Glad I could help😁 I agree, the Esterbrook pens don’t get enough love. Of all my pens, I reach for these the most.
Oh I so want the Lilac. Blueberry was my first. I love. Fun collection.
Hi, in your list, starting from the m600 and all writing samples below are showing the same line width, while nibs are some F, some M. The line looks really M to me. That is so strange.
I have found that there is a lot of variation in Pelikan nibs. For the most part, they run more broad than their size.
Does it talk about what pigments he used?
I treated myself to this set last year and absolutely love it! It's the palette I reach for when I sketch in my nature journal. Infact, today I did a loose sketch of the daffodils in my yard. 😊 Its a truly lovely well rounded set.
