Train Simulator Route Creation Tutorial 009 Scenery Tips - Mileposts And Adding Scenery
This video is a basic tutorial for people learning to use the route editor in Dovetail Games Train Simulator Classic and previous versions. If your using the route editor for the first time I think you will find helpful information contained in this video and I recommend you view my previous tutorials. Remember to back up your simulator before doing any editing in case you make a mistake while editing. I cannot be responsible for a wrong click on your part.
This tutorial covers two subjects. First we talk about how I place mileposts and second how I modify, smooth and prepare the terrain for scenery. Then I show you how I add the scenery to the terrain. My methods I learned by watching other tutorials and by trial and error working within the editor.
As always leave me a kind comment if you found the tutorial helpful and give us a like. If you have a better way of creating within the editor, please share it with others.

Use your imagination as we slip back in time to Cowan Tennessee and the L&N in the 1970's via Train Simulator Classic. A southbound coal train with 4 GP38's and a GP9 have just added the Cowan Pushers to the consist and are ready to head south out of Cowan. Its the closest those of us who remember that time will get until someone drags out some moldy films or VHS of the real deal. The GP38's ar...

Turn on your imaginations as we step back in time to the mid 1960's at Cowan, Tennessee. The Louisville and Nashville railroad has merged with the Nashville, Chattanooga, and St Louis railway back in 1957. When it just shows 1 bumper the track has been split for one route only - the end of the yard line. The mainline will still be connected. When two bumpers appear the turnout is still intact but the mainline has been split as would happen if you split the track normally.
My grandfather worked on the last train coming out of Tracy city. Last mountain goat train
I had grandparents and great grandparents who lived on the mountain near Sewanee. I remember as a child the Tracy City Branch because the branch ran over the interstate, the bridge running next to the highway there.
I work at the cowan railroad museum and we just wanna say thank you for your work on this
Where can I get this route?
Great Video, Not only did I learn something about the editor today, but you made it look easy! Will your route be available when you finish it?
Thanks for putting this up.
Any idea if you're releasing this as a workshop route? Would love to have it since I live in Cowan myself!
This is a beneficial tutorial. Thank you. I have one issue when doing this. It all works, however when I throw the switch, neither the target nor the handle actually moves. Do you know how to fix this?
RIP George. God bless you.
This sim is spot on . I have shot slides at this locale since 1982 and you have captured it very well. Never saw F units on the Tracy City branch tho'. , just dirty GP's . Man, I miss the old L&N !
This video just came up in my suggestions, I’m glad George’s magnificent simulator work is preserved in this videos. RIP George you are missed by so many.
Sure am gonna miss ya buddy
I’ve been looking for video to help me get the skills to make my first layout in my simulator on my iPad but all the video I came across were not the video luckily I found yours
Hello, thanks for the positive feedback. That helps! I hope you find something useful to help your creation process. There are many good tutorials out there and sites like Railworks America, UKtrainsim, and TrainSim Community where you can find help. I decided to create some tutorials to help others learn to do a route. I'm still learning myself and finding new and better ways to get it done. As time permits I will do more! Good luck with your route.
Nose mounted mars lights anyone? These are what made L&N locos awesome. I sure miss those days. The last L&N U30C I remember seeing was pounding the diamonds at Marion , OHIO about 1990 on the C&O. Still in grey!
I couldn't agree more. The modeler who repainted this unit did not chose one with the Pyle Gyralight unfortunately. There are limitations on what I can do in the simulator based on my current skill levels at modifying and repainting. So I have to run what is available out there.
Whatever happened to caboose 700???
Interestingly enough, CSX was still using a B & O piggyback trailer for a storage shed at the Tullahoma, TN depot that is similar to the ones on the northbound 620 (same paint scheme and all) as of about a year and a half ago.
Neat! Stuff hangs around the railroad.
this game is so amazing bro
It's fun and a challenge to create a route into it.
Great videos about the railroads I grew up around the railroad and work in the Sequatchie Valley branch
Thanks, eventually I will include the Sequatchie Valley Branch. First I'm going to finish the Tracy City to Palmer. Got most of the track done but lots of scenery to do.
@@agwsdad are you going to go all the way to Pikeville Tn
I also work on the Caney Fork and Western and the walking horse
@@brandonrichardson6750 Yes to Pikeville. Going North from Cowan, currently I am at Estill Springs. Eventually, if I survive 🙃I will go north towards Nashville. I'm afraid I don't have much info on the Sparta line or Shelbyville. Maybe. Currently, I have just a stub of the line to Huntsville at Dechard. Another branch I haven't much info on. I grew up on the SVB and TCB.
Is it done yet? 🤣 Seriously, it’s looking fantastic.
Thanks! If I had a cool gig like VR I'd have more time to git'r done! Just kidding...you guys are everywhere, now.
This is looking absolutely fantastic!
Thanks! Its fun.
Excellent video.
Thanks
Awesome
Thanks
Would have loved to have heard early generation Geeps pull that initial grade out of Cowan
You bet! 2 and 3% all the way to Sewanee. I was never fortunate enough to see a train running anywhere on the branch back in the day. They ran at night a lot I heard in the latter days. I did see a MOW train at Coalmont parked on the mine spur across Highway 56 about 1970. One GP7 with a Jordan Spreader.
Great video, you have a good way explaining. look forward to watching all your tutorials. Cheers from Scotland
Thank you for your kind words. I hope you find them useful. I learned from watching tutorials myself and trial and error experimentation in the world editor. I plan more tutorials as time allows.
always look foward to your work good job
Thank you sir
Egg cellent !
Thanks Batman
Did L&N actually have F7s in the black paint scheme??
Hello, they sure did. I believe it started in the late 1950s when their original diesel scheme was fading and around the merger with the NC&StL in 1957. There were a variety of plain paint jobs that I call their "austerity" period. They had a variety of lettering and medallions applied over the years until they settled on the gray and yellow scheme around 1963. These were used on F's and early GP's. I believe the passenger units were solid blue during the period.
@@agwsdad Thanks for the awesome info!!!
And I should have mentioned on the Passenger E's and also the freight switchers, too. They all got the plain paint!!
Just one question, I saw a rounded end car like 2nd to last, why was it done that way??
It really did not matter since it was a test run. There were no passengers on board. The last car arrived late and was added for additional weight on the test train.
@@agwsdad Ah ok, I was wondering about that
Great work on this Train Sim module! Enjoyed watching it. Thanks for putting this up.
Thank you for the kind comment. More to come as work progresses.
I went off the side of that mountain last year had to have my leg amputated it gives me chills every time I see it
For real? So sorry you had that happen. Hope you're on the mend. Looked at your WIP on Atlanta-Macon. Keep it up. We need more routes from the southeast.
@@agwsdad yep im still here and yes we do need more SE routes dovetail was like lets just make some lazy western routes for train simulator and call it a day which was lame i downloaded the hi line and marias pass merged route from whitefish to Harve takes hours to traverse especially loaded with traffic which is awesome if a third party can create that merge i dont see what dovetails problem we need a community like msts once had creators was kicking out alot of content back in those days
@@yaboidspdadon5838 You are so right. And they allow even less participation on TSW. I see community content as improving things, not taking money out of their pocket. Gotta have the base game which is what they sell.
This is a nice looking route you've built. I'm glad to see you back. Also nice to see a route designer that creates believable scenery. I've been working on resurrecting the old Parkersburg Branch of the B&O in West Virginia, set in the 1958. With GoogleEarth I've been able to trace out the old line, now a biking/hiking trail since the mid 80's. Parkersburg is called the City Of Bridges for good reason. The iconic trestle than runs through the heart of the city is the focal point of my route and has turned out quite nice if I do say so. Also built the old road suspension bridge long since torn down which stood next to the railroad trestle. I've been dabbling in screen recording and editing and hopefully will have something to post in the near future. The Georgian is pretty.
Thanks for your kind comments. It takes some time as you well know to do a route. I've been unable to work on the route for several months and just got back to it. Looking to make some more progress. I intend to share the route when it is done for everyone to enjoy. I have not even tried to master the 3D software skills yet. I will have to when I'm ready to create the correct structures and bridges, eventually.
When I started my route I turned off the procedural flora in the settings. I prefer to add my own ground cover and it seems to save on few FPS as well as not having to deal with grass growing in places you don't want.
Great work been looking forward for your videos on this
Thanks, I've been very busy over the last few months. Hopefully, things are improving so I can get back to working on the simulator. More to come...

this is incredible!! outstanding work!!
Thanks for the kind compliment. Someday, I hope to complete the route to Chattanooga including the SVB (seeing your interest in that branchline). I'm currently working on the Tracy City Branch in the simulator.
@@agwsdad SVB as in Sequatchie Valley Branch? Sequatchie valley railroad?
Correct!
@@agwsdad oh man! i've grown up around the SQVR and my grandfather did too!! i wish it still went to dunlap or pikeville. i really wish i'd seen the coal hauling days back in the 1980s-1990s. they had such unique power, i'm really glad to hear your gonna be making it in a trainz/train sim game!
@@SouthernRaiIs1186 It's a long process to detail a route. It'll be a while before I make it to the SVB. BTW my icon is the Whitwell depot just before it was demolished in 1973.

Still in Atlanta at Southeastern Railway Museum.
@@agwsdad when is the last time she was under steam?
Oh gosh.....I'm thinking late eighties. It was last running on New Georgia Railroad. Videos of that on TH-cam...
My home town. Who created this?
Me 😁 But in someone else's program, of course. Dovetail Games Train Simulator 20XX. I had to use assets that are available in the game. I haven't learned how to create the 3D buildings or assets that would be exact. That is a big learning curve. I'm trying to get some folks to help me create the correct depots and structures for the town... I used what is currently available.
@@agwsdad I live in cowan and I'm a volunteer at the railroad museum and a board member. I can help out with that.
Hi Bobby, I have a friend who is promising to work on some of the buildings for me. Do you know how to create assets using a 3D drawing program like "Blender"? I have not taken the time to learn that process yet. I enjoy the creation of the route and adding the scenery. That's complicated enough to me. It is the main reason I have been trying to create some tutorials for folks to learn how to do that. You can see those on my TH-cam channel. In the hobby, we are blessed with lots of folks who create new content for the simulator. Some do route creation or scenery or reskin paint jobs for the various locomotives and cars (why I have those nice L&N U30C's) and some create new versions of cars or locomotives. People share their work on sites, like Railworks America and others, for people to use in their own routes. There are also several Payware folks creating content. I try and support their efforts as well as the game's creator Dovetail. We need them to continue to support the game with new content, which have been for over 12 years after it was first released. I welcome any effort you might attempt in the asset creation. There are lots of tutorial videos out there on doing it. The good thing is you are at the primary building that is needed in the route, so you have access to the dimensions and info on the depot to create an accurate representation. I used a stock depot from the Clinchfield Route to temporarily represent the Cowan freight depot until my friend can create one. I have not found dimensional drawings for the N&C depots yet. Only representative elevations. I have photos of the Cowan, Sewanee, Monteagle, Tracy, Coalmont, and Palmer depots. For my own use, I run the railroad as L&N and CSX eras. Since the TCB was abandoned at the start of total CSX control, I realize it didn't exist when the modern locomotives began to rule. To my knowledge there are no NC&StL assets that have been created for TS2021. At some point in the future, it would be easy to abandon the branch and yard to make it current and release it as more accurate modern day. I prefer to use my imagination and consider that the branch, yard, and cement plant still exist into the CSX era. I have created the branch all the way to Palmer, which of course was taken out in 1973. I have a ton of scenery to add to the route and have to lay track from Tracy City to Sewanee. I have completed the main track of the branch from Palmer to Tracy City. This is a form of model railroading that allows me to build it as big as I want to invest the time in completing. At some point I will complete it to Chattanooga and maybe the Sequatchie Valley Branch too.
This is absolutely amazing!
Thanks, more to come in the weeks ahead.
Awesome video hope to see more.keep up the good work
Thanks, Will do.
Dude I'm sitting in the Cowan Railroad museam as I type this! I would absolutely love to have this route!!!
Very cool. Say hi to Tom Knowles for me. Someday, I will publish it on one of the share sights like RailWorks America. I have a lot to finish before its published. Maybe you guys can run the video in the depot for folks. Its not monetized so I won't make a profit....
I also have to get someone to due accurate representations of the depots and facilities. I haven't mastered that tool.
@@agwsdad That would be awesome!
by the way where did you get this sim
This is Dovetail Games Train Simulator 2021. The route is my creation using the route editor inside the game. What you see I started in January 2020. See my route creation tutorial #1 on my channel. The closest route in the south that is a packaged download for the game is the Clinchfield.
this is very nice i miss the sd40s and the sd50s as well done

(from one Boomer to another) :) I think what you and many others are doing is the future of TS classic. I too have been dabbling, shall we say, for over 4 years with my rewriting of the old B&LE release from DTG back in the in the day and then discontinued due to copywrite BS. I understand it's been rereleased under a new name without the branding or some other silliness. (I thought it was free advertising but what do I know). I choose to fix and update this route to the 1950's simply because it is the track plan that I found most interesting. Burned up my first PC attempting what I imagined. I'll never be able to publish my route for others because I do not own the route. But I hate laying track....lol and the B&LE had what I was generally looking for. (I will eventually post videos of what I'm doing one day soon) To those of you with the wherewithall to start from scratch, god bless ya. But back to the main point, this route and routes like Minerman's Bergan Line is the future of this platform. DTG always catered to those with low end specs and you can't blame them for that, but for the rest of us...this is certainly one of the best train sim platform to create works of art. And you have certainly proved that point. Outstanding scenery. Great editing. Well done. Meaty sound mod BTW. Made my table vibrate!! Thanks for sharing your hard work. (The narrow rock cuts and tunnel are not easy to do in World Editor) Wow! You have given me inspiration to try something like that myself. Making TS classic go above and beyond. It is the future. Keep going my friend.
Thank you. If there is one good thing to come out of the recent pandemic, it was that I had time on my hands to learn to use the Route Editor in TS2020. The first time I looked at the editor back in 2015, I was totally confused and closed it right away. I decided to try again and slowly learned it by watching you tube tutorials. I agree that it is a great platform to create in and I tell others it is the only artistic thing I've ever done. I really enjoy the scenery creation and wanted a route I was familiar with so I started with the Cowan area because it is unique with the pusher district. Learning and creating has also inspired me to try and help others with my tutorial videos. I understand why DTG keeps it low end to market to folks with average computers and other platforms like Xbox. I'm thankful they continue to support the program and bring out new content. I hope they do for a long time. Thanks again for your kind comments and I look forward to seeing your route in the future.
Very good tutorials for the beginner. I wish you had been around a few years ago. Might have saved me countless hours of aggravation.
Thank you for your kind words. I am trying to help folks as I learn myself. I hope you found a worthwhile tip or trick that will help as you go forward. I'm always interested in hearing a better way too, so don't hesitate to make suggestions. I learn something new everyday. Thanks again.
I started with Trainz. I created some rather unique and highly detailed structures, most of which were 3D renderings of the old FSM kits from way back. Last time I checked, they are still in the download community and up to around 12,000D DL's. Unfortunately, my Nvidia 750 couldn't handle the sim. I had an old CD copy of Train Simulator 2014 laying around after finally giving up on Trainz and to make a long story short, I was bitten by the TS editor bug. I have been editing and updating the old B&LE route, moving it up to the late 1950's from the 20's for about 2 years, starting over after getting a gaming PC a few months ago. The only thing even remotely original to the route is the track. I hate laying track. The B&LE had a great track plan. I've changed the topography to represent a more West Virginia feel (my adoptive home state) and will eventually changed names to make it my own layout. I am pretty sure I couldn't legally upload the route but that's OK. It's for my own personal enjoyment. I'll probably upload video's and make a few tutorials if and when I get around to it. I spare no expense in detail. I thought I was the only one who knew how to create and edit in TS. Then this guy, Minerman146 shows up with the Bergen Line, showing to the train simmers out there what can actually still be done in TS. Do check out this series. th-cam.com/video/tCJ3RP66D5g/w-d-xo.html
I hear you and have felt the pain. The Bergen Line looks fantastic. I've been enjoying it too. It's the way the games should look. I do however understand the process involved in producing the product to make it appealing to the masses. There has to be some level of graphic detail that the average computer will support or they can't sell the games. Not everyone who picks up a copy of the game can support such fantastic graphics, just as your described experience with Trainz indicates. Glad you moved to a PC that can support the graphics. As for the route editor, it takes some time to get the hang of using it, but it is a lot of fun and can produce rather satisfying results if you hang with it. Having only been editing for about a year I'm not totally familiar with the B&LE route, but I think it's still on the Railworks America site without the branding issues that got it removed from DTG a few years back. You may be able to upload your version there as a revamp without any copyright issues. something to look into.
I appreciate that you talked through your video tutorial and didn’t have any music or anything else going on as you did it much appreciative
Hope you get some help from my tutorials. I'm by no means an expert. Just trying to help those who might be struggling like I did to start.
I have to say, I love your honesty in the intro.
Thanks!
