How I Would Prepare For the NSW Selective Exam
If John was back in Year 5 or 6 preparing for the selective high school exam, he would focus on consistent practice, experimenting with different tutoring options, and leveraging ranked tests to gauge my performance against others. He goes through this and more in this video.
- Choose between group or one-on-one tutoring based on your learning style, budget, and time left before the exam. (John personally was too prone to distractions so group classes or purely online classes would not be suitable)
- Track your performance compared to others to gauge readiness and make adjustments like through weekly or fortnightly test
- Follow a study timetable, use targeted resources, and minimise distractions over time.

Do you know if it is any difference when it comes to entry into year 11?
yes the difficulty of questions is harder with longer question types etc
What was your scores when transferring to Girraween high school
have a look at my other HAST videos - I believe I share what you need to do in each component of the exam with examples from other students
Hi bing's academy, I really struggle with time management especially with thinking skills and mathematical reasoning. Can you give me some tips to improve? (btw if anyone else has some tips please reply)
for thinking skills, you literally only have a minute per question. If your test is this May, I would go through a higher volume of questions as you need more test exposure. Going through questions slowly step by step is great to understand the concept but if you only have a few months to go, do as many practice papers as possible. If you then go over the practice paper and take your time on the incorrect answers, that should help you! For mathematical reasoning, it is very different from normal math. Try to find out which topics or concepts you are weaker in so you can work backwards from there. By focusing on your weaker areas within such a large subject, it will give you more focus. Otherwise there is just way too many things to work on! Hope that helps!
@@BingsAcademy Thank you so much!
Same I'm low-key scared
Have you got any practice books or other resources for Hast or Edutest
no books at the moment! we might be releasing some tests in a few months but until then, we only do one on one tutoring for HAST.
@BingsAcademy Thanks for the reply. Can you give me any useful tips or study material or study tips for Hast or Edutest. Thanks in advance. (Also I'm taking the year 8 Hast test for entry into year 9)
@@chillyfn9996I transferred into Girraween and I had a really strong report and supporting documentation. A tip is that you will see lots of other students from other schools so don’t be intimidated and stay focused on exam day.
@Lisa-b5 Excuse but can I ask how good your report was e.g how many a's and b's.
@Lisa-b5 and did you do any maths competition like icas or amc and add them in your supporting document if you did what scores did u get in those e.g distinction
I am doing Mine is my 2025
goodluck! it is coming soon
Just wondering is it only for scholarship? Because in my child’s school, they are doing it in their class, not as a scholarship test.
No they also do progress and placement tests + Gifted Student Ability Measure (GSAM) Tests to see who can get into a gifted and talented class. However, most of their exams will have similarities and they are mostly known for the AAS Scholarship exam
Hi John, I'm going to do the HAST exam this year for admission next year which is Grade 8th. Do you have any tips for finding the first terms or any extra tips for the middle sequence component as it's probably one of the only things I am struggling in the Abstract Reasoning test.
Look carefully at the rest of the sequence not just the one right before and after it (for the middle sequence). The more questions you do of this type, the better you will become. Keep in mind there are not many spots in grade 8 in NSW so definitely keep trying for future years if you do not manage to make it in. Think of this year as a practice run for the experience, there is nothing to lose
@@BingsAcademy Thanks, I will keep in mind that i will also try in the future years
Bing my son was able to get an admission in girraween hs for year 10, will he be able to choose the subjects he desires for the HSC if he performs well in school or will he be underprivileged
He has great interest in Chemistry but Girraween do have accel science, so suppose he performs good in science at girraween will he able to secure a spot
congratulations! Generally they can choose any subject when it comes to year 11 except joining the accelerated class or doing extension as that is typically based on the year 10 performance. I'm not sure if he has the option to get into accelerated science or if it too late as they will already be starting year 11. Everything else he can choose as a subject.
Hi can you tell me the partially, fully and agriculture selective schools by listing them because I want to know but if it is to long it is ok Thanks for the tips
it is on the NSW selective website - the entire list is there!
Very helpful, keep it up!
thank you!
ummm do u have a website or like books that i can get for studying because my hast exam is this year
check out our website! we offer tutoring and will be hosting weekly exams for it most likely in April based on demand if you needed extra practice material.
can you make more videos on transfering into selective in year 7 and above and how to ace the hast exam
I have made a few videos on it already! what topics in particular are you curious about regarding it? I have talked about the report, supporting documentation, the test and a few other parts already but more than happy to go through an area I have not explored too much yet.
I got in for Yr 10 entry 2025!
woohoo! HUGE congratulations! Which school did you get into?
U don't need to. U can get the best marks in any school. Marks are dependent on you, not the school, so please don't bother listening
@@karth123-v5b clearly you didn’t bother listening either. I talked about your school preferences and making sure that it is realistic to your skill level and not just choosing the top three schools.
glad to see you back !!
Thank you!!
I have one question! Would my mark in the HSC achieve extra points if I study in a private school that has a ranking of 16??? Thanks!
chances are it will if it is a much higher rank compared to your current school. This is because there is an internal mark which is impacted by the performance of your peers doing the same subject as you in year 12
Hi, I do understand its a late comment but to be honest i dont know anyone else who makes videos like these and these types are really helpful. Im gonna apply for selective soon to prove myself but the thing is im in mainstream and i know partially selective students and other selective kids will apply again making it harder for me. I just wanna ask a few questions if u can answer it would be great! 1.Which extra-curriculars would make a good impact in the application 2. I have received all As but a B in science in mainstream but theres a chance I may be moved to the Gifted and Talented class of my grade would that make a difference? 3.The test format im sitting for provides practice tests but it only lasts 3 months and i still have a few months left so what can i do to prepare these months? Thank you and hopefully if u can make more videos on this <3
glad you found it useful! more videos to come most likely next month :) I have been quite busy and will be overseas in Jan! It depends but for instance Girraween and Penrith is extracurricular participation so it is not the type of extra curricular but rather the number. All A's and a B is quite good - check out my other video on what an ideal report should look like. Keep an eye out in April this year, we might be hosting a 12 week HAST course with weekly tests and ranks assigned. The reason why is because a lot of the practice tests online are not even similar to the real test which is very frustrating especially for students who are serious about their preparation.
Are U Ervin's brother
nope!
I am grade 3 now l do napplan
Hi i was wondering what recources are good for preparing for HAST as i am looking to transfer into Hurlstone in yr 8 2025 for yr 9 as well as if past hast results matter when taking the test again.
perhaps you can look at getting a tutor for the exam? There isn't past papers you can get so it is best if you learn from someone who focuses on this test and has done it before
past hast results don't matter. I tried out three times for girraween and my first attempt was pretty bad. the exam was a lot different to what i was used to
Hi John, what is the usual amount of words expected to be written for these writing exams? Thanks.
It is interesting as normally on paper, it would approximately be 1 and a half pages to 2. Typed exams, from 2025 onwards would be different as it is on the computer but think of a rule of thumb of most responses having 5 cohesive paragraphs, potentially 6 depending on the text type given
hello! (last question i swear So i got into a school ranked around the 120 mark for hsc nsw. I want to apply for girrawean or penrith before applyingto something like ncb or jrahs, if i get mainly as with some b's, and advanced math spot (with extraciriculars like top 2% in the country for science icas, top 1% for math icas and for my year 9 naplan i got all band 6's. Should i try for james rouse in yr 9 , which have 30 extra spots, or try for girrawean, penrith and then in year 11 try for james rouse
I would say try to go for girraween and ruse. They have different tests so if you do not make it into ruse for year 9 despite the extra seats, you get some extra practice for girraween/penrith hast test which has the extra seats in year 10
@@BingsAcademy thanks for the advice, ive decided girraween, james rouse and sydney boys. In year 11 ill apply for nsb, wish me luck for girrawean, james rouse and bualkham hills, i will tell you if i get in
@@AwaiznAshazedits sounds good! good luck!

With selective tests going online is writing section also online ? Would they be checking writing skills or typing skills ?
i know! huge change. mixture of both, if you don't type enough - it is very difficult for a marker to know whether they can demonstrate strong writing skills

great to hear! congratulations
for me, i was able to land an interview into sths, fortstreet denied but i really thought i had sths in the bag. I failed both entrys, quite unfortunate. i mean selective schools won't alter my atar/hsc much wont it?
sorry to hear. it just depends on your current school. the biggest benefit of selective is that basically everyone is quite 'bright' so it helps quite a lot in the hsc/atar. Although if your current school is already comparable in ranking, you are fine
So how many tests in total?
jhon, how do you get the information about the amount of out of area enrollments and acceptences for schools, could you either link it for sefton or tell me, thanks
Hi John, do you do AAS private tutoring?
not at the moment!
hello bing, i would like to know what materials you would reccomend for the HAST exam, im aiming for girrawean btw. Also i was wondering if you could do a video about the edutest since alot of top selective schools do it
I could but it would not be from a personal point of view as I did not try out for schools that have edutest exam back in my time. perhaps in the future!
Thanks to your videos and preparation I managed to pass selective and get into baulkham hill's👍(btw i got top 10 percent in writing)
Awesome to hear! You should be very proud of yourself!
yo jhon, im doing the hast in 2026, do you know if i chose girrawean and hourlstone as 2nd and 3rd choice, will i still sit their tests or will i only have to do an essay like fort street, also do the dates change every year
Hi Bing! As someone who is trying to prepare for hast and has no experience other than getting into a selective school what would you recommend and another question, is Sydney girls an option for Hast? Sorry to bother one more but what score do you think will get me into girraween? Or is there no specific score?
check out the sample paper and my videos on this. It should give you some good insights on what you can expect. No specific score - it is a mixture of your performance compared to other applicants as well as supporting documentation. Sydney girls does not do HAST - so definitely research more!
hey john, i have a question. i have a niece who got into to elizabeth macarthur high school and macquarie fields high school( reserve B) in the selective test. She doesnt know wether she should be happy or sad. should she be happy?
hey it depends on what she was aiming for initially. If her local catchment school or backup school is better than it might be a little dissapointing but she did put down two selective options. With one of them she ended up receiving an offer for elizabeth macarthur and a good reserve for macquarie fields. The likelihood of her making it into macquarie fields is quite high. I personally would be quite happy with that but it really depends on what she was aiming for.
thank you, this is such a relief for her. she actually got the offer from macfields this morning, and when i showed her your reply she was pretty much beaming!
Hi Bing. I have got the results for the Baulkham hills test but the offers haven't come out yet. I have got 2 superiors out of 5 subjects. How many superiors do I need to get in
Sorry, what do you mean by Superiors? Do you mean an 'A' in a subject? Generally need to get an A in most subjects. Some schools have already reached out to students regarding reserve lists and placements.
Hi John, I have just received my HAST results for my year 9 enrollment. In the exam, I did quite terribly, but my overall percentile is still in the top 15%. Do you think I still have a standing chance to get into either MFHS or HAHS?
If they sent you the result without organising an interview, chances are you were not shortlisted unfortunately..
Hi Bing, our family moved to Sydney for only 6 months. I am sure I missed the year 7 entry test. Mind I ask for year 8 selected school entry, what test should I prepared? HAST?
Hello! You should have a look at my videos on transferring into a selective school. Most schools have HAST, some have Edutest while other's have their own custom exam. I recommend researching properly so you can plan correctly
Yo John, I didn’t make any selective school, but I made an out of area enrolment to Sefton high school. Would you think I will make it, I have 4 extra cirriculars and has been shortlisted for DUX.
It is hard because out of area enrolments for any partially school will be competitive. The reason why is because there are so many students who want to join the school. Great you have been shortlisted for Dux but they will take all the local catchment students first and if there is any left over, then look at out of area enrolment
@@BingsAcademy oh ok, still tho, what do you think the chances are of me getting in, they said the will reply in a months time, is that good or bad, and I was able to get to the semifinals in a math cup with over 40 schools competing and the same result but at a STEM challenge

@@BingsAcademy okay tysm !
Hi
Hiii I got my result, and I got in my first option !
I have moved to America for 3 years with my kids. My daughter will not give year 3 naplan but she is already doing grade 3 maths of Australia when she is in year 2 mid Australia wise. I think with hardworking and consistency she has a fair chance. I am a primary school teacher and have more time here but I cannot put her in Oc prep tuitions as there is no such thing. I have been doing naplan style tests with her and normal reading and maths. Should I start her with OC prep myself. Can u recommend resources. I was thinking excel test zone online
you can purchase OC books from Australia and do them with her. NAPLAN and Excel test in my opinion should be a lot more easier than OC so it can be a good very early starting point but you will have to go through more harder/appropriate questions closer to the test. .
I'm doing it tomorrow but my practice tests are kinda hard. Are the practice tests the same difficulty or is it a higher level?
i'm assuming you meant the HAST test which was today on the 3rd August 2024! How did you compare it to sample/practice tests?
