That was fun, pacing the 1:50 group at the 2024 Cairns Half Marathon.
However, I was a bit rusty and got the early pacing wrong. Check out the video to see just how much.
It was out second time in Cairns for the marathon festival and it was better than our first visit 12 months earlier.
Can't wait to go back.

    I've been following this channel for about 1.5 years... it's my favourite running one! Others may go harder on shoe reviews... or be hitting faster paces. I love your mix of content and the delivery is awesome. I wouldn't change anything! Keep doing what you're doing Woody!

      You're a legend @LeePrice82. You have been a loyal supporter and always quick to leave a comment to videos, which I greatly appreciate. There won't be a lot of changes, but my approach to how I go about things I will tinker with a little. 👍

    I'm thinking to do the Cairns mara so soon after GCM, I might have to be a pacer. Although that goes against what Keith used to tell me "Never pace, always race".

    • @runwithwoody
      @runwithwoody 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      It's a great weekend up there, very low key and a great place to go and spend a few days. If you don't mind a few laps and a few twist and turns, the course is dead flat - the marathon winner did 2.30 this year. I'll see you there next year! 👍

  • @fezzwheel2572
    @fezzwheel2572 20 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    To pace, I upload the course and use the Garmin Pace Pro with the goal time. In the case of a 1:50 half, I'll manually make all the splits 5:12 with a goal finish time of 1:49:43. Garmin pace pro also gives you an extra filed "Ahead / Behind" and it will show you your time on that given GPS spot. Another thing is a pace bracelet with all the KM times. Each KM I am manually pressing the lap key, and keeping an eye out of the "Average Lap Time". Lots of numbers, at some times race KM markers seem incorrect. So lots of mental maths.

    • @runwithwoody
      @runwithwoody 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the heads up. I have found my Garmin always a little off in races, but I feel if I get close to target pace then I'm not too far away from where I should be. For this event, there were only KM markers every 5k, so it made it a little more difficult. But in future I will check out those things you mentioned and maybe give them a try. 👍

    Hey Neil. As a pacer is there some magical equation to work out what pace group you would be suited to?

    • @runwithwoody
      @runwithwoody 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hey Alan, no magic formula really. You just need to be confident you can run the pace comfortably, be able to talk regularly and encourage those around you. I used to pace 3.30 marathons and found that comfortable (couldn't do it anymore), whereas I did a couple of 3.15s and that was a little more challenging. My advice would be to not bite off too much. I'm around a1.35ish half marathon now, so 1.50 was OK. 👍

  • @chrismogridge1
    @chrismogridge1 20 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    You did good. Don't beat yourself up all the time. I'm about 1.50 pace, and although I like to have the 1.50 pacer behind me, it doesn't hurt for those chasing a 1.50 to have someone to see up ahead. Well done Woody. Enjoy your time up there.

    The flexibility point is so important! I'm currently half way through my first marathon training plan, following it to a T, and struggle with saying "no" to parkruns and social run clubs. I feel that I'm missing out on the social aspect of running, but I guess making sacrifices is part of the process.

    • @runwithwoody
      @runwithwoody 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hey mate, good luck with that marathon prep. When I did my fastest marathons, my long runs were with others and it really helped. Also understand that not everyone is in a position to do that, so some sacrifices have to be made. Not having that social contact on those long runs can be hard, but it can also make your stronger come race day. 👍

  • @davely7
    @davely7 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I agree with alot of the good comments here. Also for me as I got older I realized it was easier for me to maintain endurance than speed. As a result, I went for longer distances at my reduced speed. Maybe look ar marathon or 50k. Your training volume looks like it can support it. Just a suggestion to consider.

    I really enjoyed this series Neil. Great to see a training block up close and personal. Running all runs solo is a lot harder, so i totally understand why you would reconsider the 10 day calendar. Fewer runners train to it so it's harder to find people to share runs with.

    I think you need to point yourself back into the direction of threshold session. We always use to talk about training ourselves to be comfortably uncomfortable. I know every time I step away from speed sessions for a bit & return back towards tempo/threshold that once I got comfortable with this everything else falls back into place. They are also better on an ageing body for recovery opposed to flogging ourselves during intervals.

    • @runwithwoody
      @runwithwoody 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, agree with that. The easy/aerobic runs are fine, but the body doesn't appreciate it when I turn up the gas, but maybe I need to start off with small distance/time and go from there. 👍

    Hey Neil. Rather than setting goal times. Just punch your current half marathon time in some online calculator like Jack Daniel's or McMillian and get some new paces to train to based on your current "old man" fitness rather than pushing to hit a time goal. JMHO. Treat yourself like you would as a beginner runner you're coaching.

    Thanks for the video, glad the rain stopped before the start but my feet were already wet, I wish Gold Coast marathon could find a covering for the finish as once it rains it becomes muddy. I ran a personal best but need to start closer to the front or you spend so much time going around people.

      Congrats on the PB mate. We got lucky with the weather, but agree that meeting area outside the recovery area got pretty wet. Definitely get closer to the start next time mate. See you at the next event. 👍

    Well done mate. It’s often those runs where you have to dig really deep that are the most satisfying.
