Reviving a BEAT UP Classic: Restoring the Yamaha M1532 Mixing Console (Part 1)
I recently came across an old mixing console that I could resist to purchase. It's a 1975 Vintage Yamaha M1532 console that needed a lot of work.
Recently there is a lot of buzz around this consoles PM1000 which is often compared to Neve (japaneve Pres)
This video I discuss why I decided to take on this project and how I'm going to use this vintage recording console in my home studio.

Avoid these when building a home recording studio
This is definetly a grounding issue. Make sure all the metal compnents are grounded to your power supply ground.
Hi Nick, Great console. I have recently rebuilt a Yamaha MC2404. Drop me a message if you have any questions.
Thanks so much. I’m sure I will have many questions. Haha. I think you are right about the grounding. I have the power supply open and it is a mess. Someone years ago changed the connector for the cable and I think not everything is connected properly.
@@nickiden You want to make sure the phasing is correct. 120 volts - hot wire to positive and negative to the negative point, in th epower supply circuit. Old ungrounded receivers have this problem, two prong plug that you can plug in either way. One way works the other gives feedback. If you want to post a few pics of the wiring I'm happy to offer some guidance.
That would be awesome. I’m going to work on it tomorrow so I’ll take a few pictures and let you know
Love the honesty Nick. That excitement makes you want to create so I get that. I'm a hardcore Logic Guy since the eMagic days for those old enough and this has now peaked my curiousity. Thanks for the insight.👌
You’re so welcome. I remember the logic eMagic days. That said one of the very first daws I had. That and SAW plus 32. One day I want to do a throwback video on those DAWs. :D
Brown is just dark orange
Or…. Is orange just light brown?
@nickiden your mom is light brown
@ yes :D
@nickiden wait really
he's a dumb ass for suing Trump he will lose a lot of sells, really stupid move!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you try Sound City Studios. That Plugin is next level. Faderport works perfectly
Don't forget about using the console app for the unison tech. Oh you don't have an Apollo. So you don't have Console. Console 's the SHIT!
To label the tracks different you have to have the number of new track boxes as many tracks as u want and you name them different there.
looks like a cool project, will follow, best of luck.
Thanks. Yeah I think it will be a fun project for sure
Come back and do this again when you are actually on top of it.
At some point I want to re review it once I have a year under my belt and probably do a comparison with Pro Tools
Are plans still available?
Yes check out this link idensguitar.com/my-top-diy-recording-studio-desk-builds/
Very nice
Yeah I agree
This is awesome! I may track down a couple of channels and turn them into some kind of preamp rack
You should. I think when I was posting this a couple racking vids came up. Looks like a really good idea
@@nickidenmate I’ve spent all morning researching it. Looks like a pain to source a rack to mount it in and also get a power supply made. Might make a DIY kit as that’d be fun. Think you made one before? Although I’ve seen that Behringer just brought out a 2 channel Neve 1073 ripoff which is a good price: might be crap but MusicTribe (who own Behringer) make components for everyone so that have the resources to use the same parts as the high end brands
@PherotoneStudios yeah building a power supply for the rack mounted challenge I can see being a problem. I didn’t even think of looking into Musictribe resources. That’s a really good idea.
As an old mac user with Catalina I just discovered Reaper, Luna, Soundbridge, Ardour and Tracktion Waveform free daws which support vst plugs.
Nice :D
The Luna Recording System has been awesome for writing and recording!!!!! 🤘
Yeah I really enjoy it for that
Yes please do an in depth
I would love to do a full video, there’s a crazy story to this build
Great video man! A recommended addition if you're on Mac is to add the Accessibility feature "Use scroll gesture with modifier keys to zoom". This way you can hold ctrl key and zoom using the mouse/trackpad to zoom into the interface a bit, helps reading and setting things on the different consoles on a smaller screen.
This is awesome. Thanks :D
Which sounds better acoustically?
I’m team Rivera. But the Casino sounds awesome unplugged too
@nickiden Ive been a massive Beatles fan since I was 5 years old so the casino appeals to me very much, I'm also a big oasis fan so I'm quite partial to the riviera. I work nights on security and like to take my guitar in to work with me and practice through the night when it's nice and quiet, I'm currently using the Gibson inspired epithone j-45 but would like something that has less volume when playing acoustically which is why I'm looking at the semi acoustic range. I've seen a video of someone playing the casino unplugged but can't seem to find one of the riviera
@ I think in your case the Casino is the way to go. Or see if you can get your hands on a used Broadway. It’s a bit bigger but sounds great unplugged:D
@nickiden I'll have a look in to the Broadway thanks
Which amp / processor are you using for your guitar to get that sweet tone pls?
I used a boss Katana on the clean channel with my LesPaul. I think the eq was all set to 12
@ Sounds great!
I can’t find the folder after I eject and update the amp with tone studio.
Oh no, I believe it should be on your desktop or listed on the file manager directory section. I have to double check
thanks for the info i've been looking for a new daw to try out for a while
You’re welcome. :D I hope the info helps

My katana has a acoustic channel, I didn't see one on yours. Is it an older model ?
It might be hard to see in the video but there is an acoustic setting :D
Hi, great content! I’d like to ask a question: did you notice a volume difference on the input compared to pro tools? I’m asking because I’ve noticed that when I use a guitar plugin in Logic pro, such as Helix, Neural or others, when I use the same plugin in Luna with the same audio interface settings, the input level is way higher, to the point that a clean amp sounds like a crunch one! Thanks a lot
Thanks. I honestly didn’t notice a difference in volume with different plug ins. What interface are you using?
Peace. Thank you for this video! I had no idea that many PT shortcuts worked in Luna.
Haha thanks and I know right? It makes getting into Luna.
I have an omen elite 7 string and I love it. Have a demon 6 as my 6 string schecter, that one was about 550ish. It's pretty solid but the omen elite 7 is fantastic. More schecters will be in my future for sure.
Thanks for the comment. What do you think your next Schecter will be?
Ive had my Boss katana for over a year and I just found out it has a software...
Haha… I haven’t done much with the software for the boss lately
cant get ilok to work so cant use this
Oh no. Is it just a transfer issue? My ilok manager is constantly updating when I use it and it’s a pain
When doing this, can I actually hear the guitar on the PC headphones?
yes
Can you? I didn’t know that. :D.
I've played one of these, and in my humble opinion, the price is not justified. Sure, it looks cool and has the signature greeny pickups, but it honestly doesn't sound that amazing. Unless you're a guitar collector who just wants to have an iconic guitar, I don't recommend.
Thanks for the insight on that. I agree with you
I ordered the 47. They said they have a regular as well as a + model ( gold capsule ) . I’m now considering their 29+ model. Have you tried it ? Supposed to be a TF 29 clone. Btw is this a 47 or 47 + model?
The 29 model looks pretty cool but I’ve. Ever tried one. Maybe for Christmas I’ll get one haha. The 47 in the video is just the regular one
@ 29+ was recommended by the GTZ man himself!
Your playing & singing is better than any mic in the world bro!
Thanks you so much :D this comment totally made my day
I came for a desk build video and bro just talked the whole video
Haha it’s true I do talk a lot through the video but all fairness it was one of my first ones.
I mean you can complain about the way Reaper looks, but then you see that you casncustomize it any way you want... Other DAWs look boring too. In the end it's fairly utilitarian software... but most commercial options give you the one look: the look *they* decided on. I think Reaper has an aesthetic. If you don't like it, there are ways to change it to your liking. I mean, tastes are gonna differ and I think Ableton is pretty unsightly tbh. Is there a way to change that? No. So, personally I wouldn't list this as a 'con', not while none of the other DAWs give you much of a way to customize the way it looks.
Fair point
Maybe that plug and go problem was last year, because I just got one and tried it out and it worked right away. Also I was wondering how I could record what I play? do I need to download a different software? or can the Boss Katana do it too?
I believe you have to record using another piece of software. That’s great they may have worked out some of the issues people were having. Are you on a Mac or pc?
this was a great video. thanks
Thanks :D
I have now switched from Win Cubase to OSX Logic to Luna after ~20 years. Especially the “ARM” mode for latency-free recordings without buffersize problems is so much better than in Logic. I like it and haven't had Logic open for 12 months.
You can use Cubase without any latency too. Luna is not better. I began with Cubase with Atari. There is a same kind of ARM in Cubase and you can add more plug ins than in Luna while recording.without any latency too.
Thanks for your insight on this. :D
@@christoph8605yes, same with logic, but you can’t monitor with plugins and no latency without using console, which is the problem Luna is solving, in all other daws and interfaces you only can monitor the dry audio with no latency.
The word I hate when reviewer reviews affordable audio equipment is “cheap”
Meh. There is a time and place for that word. There’s nothing wrong with affordable gear but sometimes when it’s obvious they cut corners to make it affordable it can feel cheap :D. Haha does that make sense? In my brain it does haha
Luna is like an old version of Pro Tools that lacks so much of what is needed for a professional workflow! I understand UA's marketing strategy of wanting to implement plugins and analog summing options in the DAW, but it doesn't really do as much as is generally claimed! - People who know analog gear would rather refuse LUNA and those who have no experience with it don't know how to use this stuff! A lot of hype, nothing more!
I do agree with you about it being like a older version of PT in the sense that some of the features needed aren’t there yet. But I think like Pro Tools they will be added eventually if Luna can maintain itself in the market. I think there are a lot of people out there including myself who have a ton of analog gear experience but still like to work in the box. Even if i had access to a ton analog gear I wouldn’t refuse Luna.
is it really necesary to use an interface or ? on windows
Nope. You can run it on Mac or windows and no interface required to run it.
I love heavier Tele guitars they usually sound better !
Yeah I do to
@nickiden do you have any plug ins that are similar to those?
Not off the top of my head but I’ll look :D
I want a deathcore vocal plug in for those crazy lornashore highs
:D
hello nick, i just received my boss katana 100 mkii head, once i turned it on , it has bad humming noise that doesn't exist in my boss katana 50 mkii ex. is this humming noise normal with 100 watts head? or is it a software issues, the noise is coming out of the back of the amp just underneath the power plug
I don’t think that’s software. Do you have it set to the clean settings or one of the drive presets. If you lower the gain and volume, switch it to clean and the buzz is still there I would think it’s a hardware connection. If you swap out the instrument cable for a different one and verify the right cable is used to your cab and the noise is there still there my guess is hardware
I saw one question in regards to an interface . I STRONGLY suggest a good quality interface but even more so that one invests in the BEST MIC PRE YOU CAN AFFORD. I refer to the late great Al Schmitt who stumbled on to this by accident with George Benson on the Breezin LP . They hooked up a cheap microphone just to get signal until Al could grab his Neumann U47 Mic . They used an Electro voice 666 mic just because it was nearby and would later switch it out for a better one . Well guess what , George LOVED it and it wound up being used for I do believe 8 of the tracks for his lead vocal . Moral of the story ? NEVER underestimate a cheap mic and a great mic pre combo . !!!😊😊
Well said :D
I actually like the Go to toolz mic . I have the 47 , and a few others from him and I really enjoy them
Yeah i wouldn’t mind getting a pair of the 87s as well. I feel they could be very handy to have
I’m looking for warm tones to play fingerstyle Strat
I don’t mind the Acoustic setting on the amp for that.
Thanks!
This is amazing. Thank you so much
The only what i wanted to know is, if Luna now can run on Windows 10, because last August it was not possible to use it on Windows 10, it have crashed constantly. But you are on Mac, like all who make You Tube Videos about Luna. MAC is for me selve to use a no go...
It works great on Windows 11. I would upgrade as Windows 10 was problematic with a lot of things.
@@justsomeguy1074 Thank you for your reply. I have try it again now, and now Luna run on Windows 10. The only problem i have now, is, with my Motu HD192s only the Imputs are working, but i get no sound output from the Luna monitor. I can not hear the mix. Only if i use VoiceMeter Software as "Audiodevice" i can hear the monitor output from Luna, but in this configuration i have no audio inputs from my HD 192s. For me Windows 10 works perfect, only the Luna Software have still bugs. Do not use Windows 11 !!!!!!!!!!! By the last Windows 11 update, is the Telemetry and all stuff with them microsoft spy on us, inplemented in the File Explorer: If you cut out the Telemetry, the whole File Explorer will no more work and with this the whole Windows 11 gets brocken. Windows 11 will collect the whole data about you, all and every step you do with your Computer. All what goes trough your File Explorer, will be stored on the microsoft servers...
Now it is working with Asio4All on Windows 10 ! There are no bugs anymore !
That’s good they worked a lot of the bugs out people were experiencing when it first came out on Windows
@@nickiden Yes. I just started using it a couple months ago and it's been solid for me.
I wish UA would let me change Luna’s shortcut key wherever I want it to.
That would be amazing
