My Favourite composer of all time and I have never understood why people dismiss him so easily when his music is so glorious. My favourite is his Symphony number 5 which transports me to an oasis in the desert for some reason everytime I listen to it. I do however have to admit that I prefer it when Vernon Handley was conducting it as he really seemed to understand what was in RVW's mind. I was also privileged to be a pupil of Jon Noble before he passed away. Even in his later years the voice was still there and he was such gentleman. I remember his favourite song to warm up was 'All the things you are.'

"The Pilgrim's process" ist die ungewöhnlichste Oper, die ich kenne. Aber: ist sie wirklich das Werk eines Atheisten oder eines Agnostikers? Jahrzehnte lang hat RVW um dieses Werk gerungen, in dem es um den christlichen Glauben geht, um das Erlangen der Herrlichkeit bei Gott wie in keiner zweiten Oper. Eine unvergleichliche Musik hat er in dieser Oper geschrieben. Ich glaube nicht, dass er Atheist ist. Vielleicht ist er Agnostiker. In jedem Fall ist er jemand, der nicht an einfache Antworten glaubt. Das macht ihn so groß: als Mensch, als Humanist, als Denker...und als Komponist. Sollte ich fünf Lieblingskomponisten nennen, wäre RVW ganz sicher dabei. Es ist so schade, dass man seine wirklich bedeutenden Werke in Deutschland so selten zu hören bekommt. Nach meiner tiefen Überzeugung gehört er zu den größten Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Und "The pilgrim's process" ist ein Meisterwerk...auch wenn es auf der Opernbühne schwer vermittelt werden kann.
