Documenting! Our family starting from scratch to resurrect a farm/smallholding that has not been maintained in years.
With little knowledge of farming/building excluding the old man, see what challenges arise in our attempts to make something of this gorgeous welsh farm.
We are now 1 years into our journey! The hay is done ! animals are starting to arrive on our farm! its a slow progress but were doing our best to work up to having our dream farm!
CURRENT TRACTORS: Ford 7600, Renault 651-2, Renault 651-4, David Brown 996, Leyland 384.

Right , I,ve had chance to think overnight , test the electrical feed wire to the thermostart with a multimeter , in 20 volt sector , with the ign key being held in the preheat position , you should find battery volts , anything less , work backwards & find the fault , bodged wiring , burnt out switch etc . Also check with same meter , but using resistance or continuity sector ( the bit that beeps when you touch the wires together ) & check that the thermostart is earthing to the engine . If all o.k. , check with same meter across the thermostart,s electrical connector , with the key in OFF , to earth again , a complete infinity reading shows a burnt - out element in the thermostart , or a dead short reading shows the element is doing just that , either way , new thermostart plug . These things literally are little flamethrowers so be very careful about working on it . Possible that the needle valve inside said thermostart is stuck down shut , so plug gets hot but never gets any diesel to burn , same answer , replace . When using the thermostart function , get someone to listen accurately to the thermostart plug in the inlet manifold , after about 15 seconds they should hear a sound like a fizzling pop , this is diesel catching fire inside the manifold , if it does that , it ought to work . These are generalised ideas based on my own experiences , you use them at your own risk & discretion . Best Regs .
@@phillipcleaver7063 thank you for commenting! I will have a read over both comments when I get in later and talk to dad, one hell of a paragraph to soak In, just out experimenting in manual photography which is a headache on its own 🫣 will have a good read through with dad and get back to you, thanks for your help ! 🙏🙂🤞
Hello guys , we had this problem for years with an old 35 4 cyl , ( 23C standard engine ) & cured it . All starter motors burn out a tiny bit every time you use them , they can still turn the engine over , but not fast enough , they also get so that they use too many amps to do it , these big perkins engines , like many others , need whacking over fast to get the compression & cylinder top end temperature right up so that they,ll fire . Like the guy below says , change your starter for a rebuilt one that is as powerful & as fast as you can get , also change those old fuel filters , getting rid of all the sludge in the bottom of them . This same sludge permeates all of the fuel system , so blast the whole system , from the injector pump back , out with compressed air . Right back to the pipe drawing the fuel out of the tanks , this might have a fine mesh filter on the end , get it out & look at it , or it might be lightly pressing straight down on the bottom of the tank when fitted , this will seriously restrict fuel availlability at any time , again , check it .Also check the tanks can get a supply of air , to prevent a vacuum inside the tank . Some versions of the D.P.A. pump have a tiny gauze disc filter installed right down in the bottom of the low pressure supply union , obviously sludge will quickly block this , don,t take it out & throw it away , it,s done it,s job marvellously , it saved your D.P.A. pump! get it out & clean it then refit . Also thoroughly check your lift pump for cleanliness ( free of all sludge ) & correct output pressure , a weak lift pump can,t shove enough diesel at the D.P.A. to quickly push it,s high - pressure lobes apart in time for the next firing point , so the engine behaves as if the stop is out all the time , it just is not being pumped enough diesel at during cold cranking . Mucky coked up injectors also cause problems , but servicing these must be handled by a qualified technician , as they must crack open at the right pressure , in the right pattern . Do not take any risks with the high pressure injector pipes , these can give you fatal injuries , it,s only a thimble - dampening amount of diesel per stroke , but it,s at one hell of a pressure & it will blast straight into your fingers / hands . Take heed of this bit . Stoke Mandeville is a long way for the surgeon to take your hand off to save your life . Changing the D.P.A. pump itself resurrected our old engine , it was just worn out .Best Of Luck guys , Happy Spanners . ( I still have the old 35 , it,s as old as me & starts cold on thermostart every time )
Not enough revs on the tractor and the ram knife blades are blunt
@@andrewdougal2262 not sure if I posted the final video, turned out most our issues was a simple overtightning of a bolt, can't remember which but it effects the size of the nots that the baler ties, by loosening the bolt it allowed the twine more length to tie the knots.
Is there a filter at bottom of diesel tank, then open bleed screws on pump, then each injector ,change fuel filters
If you can get a better starter for it it wouldn’t do it any harm turning it over faster
Yeah think it's going to be the last resort, looking at around £200-£300 for high speed starter, it's turning over alot faster with the earth lead running to the starter.
@@MowersFamilyFarm It’s well worth a go. It could be a tired engine would you rebuild it? An engine kit off agriline doesn’t cost that much. I’d keep going with it. They are a great tractor I’m looking to buy one. 698 with a tb turbo bolted on sounds great.
@martindalelawnlandscaping6660 We know the engine runs as seen it running a when bought and had it running a few times so wouldn't need a rebuild, we did know it had starting issues but hopefully it can be sorted with cheaper options first 🤞 stripped down a 675 engine few years ago, never rebuilt it in the end and still made a profit on the sale.
You have to bleed it you've got dirt in the tank but like other comments you'll have to bleed the injectors and probably change your heater plug on the air intake and yes they're generally rubbish starters we had a 298 same as yours but different cab easily the worst tractor we ever had and we had it from new
If the temperature was below 7 degrees or so ours wouldn’t start unless you put easy start to it. The glow plug in the air intake is fairly useless if it works (people have added a second to help it along) but I put a high speed starter on ours and never looked back. You’ve got smoke and she sounds like ours used to 🤷♂
Thank you! Will aim for injector cracking, diesel filters, and portentially look at the glow plug, and then if to no avail will look at the iskra high speed starters again, yeah at one point we had no smoke not sure why 🤔
@ personally I’d go to the easy start especially if it’s been running before. If you play with too many things you might chase your tail or add more problems in but that’s just me
698 have always been bad to start.
That seems to be the common reception I've found out on forums 🫣
What cold cranking lamp battery are you using🤔
Drove a 698 for over 5000 hrs and never a problem to start even in the coldest winter up here in Scotland
@@bobpaterson1845 1000a battery, about 6 months old and only used about 15 times 🫣 we recharge it every time we try just to to make sure it's charged enough
crack open the injector lines at the injectors and crank it tell its spiting fuel tighten all 4 spray either in intake before the filter one shoot only
Will give the injectors a crack hopefully next week once this ridiculous weather disappears 🫣
when you change filters the perkins motors are hard to get reprimed . you may have to do it 2,3 or 4 times
Def try cracking off the injectors and see if the fuel bleeds through. If that’s fine, id change the fuel filter. Otherwise, there should be no reason that i can think of why it wont fire (assuming the diesel is good). Another thing that you could try is ‘easy start’ in the air filter/carburettor. Good luck👍
@@happyglampers9053 Fresh diesel put in last week, even dipped a pipe in off camera and the diesel looked lovely and fresh. Will get onto cracking the injectors next, have fuel filters ready to change but a lovely 3 day weather warning to life so I don't fancy the cold windy weather, that barn gets windy lol 😆

Yeah you could easily spent 20k fully restoring it to as new condition but there's just no need as long as its welded up solid and got a fresh coat of paint it'll be fine, its a working tractor not a show piece
@@oakfarmagricultural506 Exactly it doesn't need 20k spent on it as that's literally relying on others to do all the work. Doing the work ourselves if we didn't count time as a cost which we don't as it's not a business thing then it's going to owe anywhere between £600-£1000 (welding, panels, paint, prep work, service costs etc) that's allowing for anything that could go wrong during, she's now starting off the key, this video was yesterday, the stop level isn't fully going over which is why she wasn't starting 🤦🫣noticed this morning it was half way over which is why she's chuffing in the video 🤣 But yeah she's had all terminals etc cleaned, battery fully recharged over night, will order a new stop cable as it's not retracting when pulled, and shes good to go. But will focus on the repairs next, already sanded/flated down two front wheels today as well, need to the rears next and get them painted. We've got the sheet metal now for welding and I got myself a new welding mask so I don't have to watch/learn in dad's old 1980s things that are like concrete on your head and so heavy lol. But yeah check out those tiktok comments if your on there and you'll see what I mean by them, it's like none of them can see past a bit of maintenance and repairs that need doing but most there profiles are filled with brand new John deers, claas, new Holland etc 🤦
I spent 20k on a 3070 that was in similar condition to this. Its concourse now but it was a nightmare
@@frankmurray7830 Guess it depends what sort of condition your after, and if you put in the time or someone else. Just needs to be reasonably tidied up, estimation is around £600-£1000 to tidy it, doing everything ourselves and not charging for time

The clock maybe showing 4,000 hours but that might not be genuine!
Why not buy something better? Instead of bodging that cab try find a better one and why not start work on in now?
Time constraints but I've managed to free up quite a bit of time, started stripping her down, flatting paintwork, got the engine starting on the key, going to nibble away at jobs over the coming weeks, and profit! I will post figures up whenever she's sold id that's 1 year or 10 lol David brown will be up for sale soon which will be netting 4 figure profits. This Massey will be 2-3x the dB profit

@MowersFamilyFarm any updates on the leyland, is she a keeper or will you move her on.hope you don't mind me asking.
@SteveFilby 50/50 tempted to just put the panels on I've sourced and sell as she is, or just sit on her as she's not costing anything to sit on and doesn't owe me much, and saves sitting on cash or money in bank that i don't need lol 🫣 hidden house depo sitting in assets.
they used cheap steel when they made these , massey even used wax oil on the last made ones
Yeah the 600 series are prone to rot unfortunately
The method used to construct the cab is what made them rot out - made of pressed steel panels, following car manufacturing practices, to produce what is known as a monocoque structure. And you're correct - they did indeed use Waxoyl in the cavities between the formed panels to reduce corrosion, again following car practices, where it was a common occurrence to put Waxoyl into the sills. The MF 698 was the last MF tractor to use the Perkins 4-318 engine - actually 4-3182 in this instance - an improved version, but too little, too late. The previous version of the engine was notorious for head gasket issues, both in the MF 1080 and MF 595 tractors - both built at Beauvais, in France. The MF 698 and its 4 - 3182 engine were consigned to history around the mid 80s, and replaced with the 698T, which sported a turbo'd 4 - 236 engine. This was done to achieve commonality of parts across the range and have fewer stand alone parts that had little commonality with anything else, the 4 - 318 /2 engine being one of them. As anyone who lived through the 80s will know, it was an horrendous time financially for all tractor manufacturers, but particularly MF and IH.
