Habakkuk gives us an intimate dialogue between himself and God. Habakkuk is honest in his questions and complaints which he documents. But as God answers in sovereign authority, he is quickly silenced and arrives at the same conclusion as Job in a similar circumstance, "Who am I to question...".
Chapter 3 of Habakkuk gives us a prayer as he learns to place his trust and faith in God no matter the circumstances. Despite the foundations of everything he knows in the physical world around him falling apart, he says he will glory in God. He learns to trust God's sovereignty and timing. In vs 19, he gives us great imagery to learn from, saying God gives him the feet of a deer so that he may tread on the heights.
Habakkuk is likely drawing on similar language used previously by King David which was later memorialized in Psalm 18 and used by Israel in worship. Join us as we see what we can learn from this imagery and how it helps us transform the way in which we think, and therefore act, in our circumstances.
May we all, as Habakkuk did, pray and receive feet as a deer to tread the terrain of our circumstances, walking with God in the midst.
