I loved this video so much! I've been way too isolated in my writing career for too long, and am currently editing my first TH-cam video about it because this community seems like a better fit for me than most social media. Excited to follow along on your journey!
YES, I agree! I think there’s something about TH-cam, maybe the longer form nature, that makes for better community and conversation IMO.
This is so sweet!
It was a lot of fun!!
That was nice of you.
Trust me, anyone who’s friends with Steph knows this is a bare minimum of what she deserves.
@@searchingforsamantha She sounds a keeper as a friend. I wouldn't write a limerick for most people, let alone a book.
Agreed! She’s definitely a keeper ❤️
YOU’RE SO SNEAKY.
😘😘😘😘😘
I can't get out of my head that the lady in the front row is the actress Alex Kingston. Anyway, great speech and great resources - thanks!
Haha can you imagine!!
Outlining a book throws off my creativity. I see the story like a movie in my head and that's what gets me writing. But I love the other ideas. I have trouble sticking to the writing schedule. My family wants my attention after work, but that's when I'm the most creative.
I totally get that! Do you tend to work to deadlines?
@@searchingforsamantha yes. It helps me stay on task.
Do you (or anyone reading this) know of resources to connect with other (aspiring ) authors/writers?
I’ve got a separate video about finding writing groups!
Great advice!
WOOO! Day 25 keep it uppp!
THis is relevant for me. I have been a Pantzer before and never outlined but the structure always suffered so now I am learning to outline . I do often fall into old habits but I have to apply discipline and not go off in a tangent. It's not easy.
It really isn’t easy! Even I struggle with consistency even though I came up with this method.
No. 1 They write. That's it, that's all you need to know. Just write.
Sometimes that feels easier said than done!
@@searchingforsamantha It's not difficult. You wrote a reply to me and I wrote a reply back. Why is writing anything else any more difficult than that? There is too much theory of how to write by people who can't publish a book, and not enough books written...no, actually, that's not true...enough books have been written, in my humble opinion. It's really not difficult, Chaucer did it, Shakespeare did it, Agatha Christie did it, George Orwell did it, Charles Dickens did it...I could go on. They didn't have much of any guidance, they just wrote.
If you have never struggled to bring something to existence, then congratulations. Unfortunately most people don’t share your experience. It may be simple, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. And to suggest that it is undermines the thought and care people put into their writing.
I am holding you to it!!! We are discussing "A study in drowning" because I have... feelings...
Yes!!! I’m hoping to finish it next week. It’s been slow going around my secret project, but I’m determined!
Well done. I like writing, although I don't write much fiction anymore, or read it for that matter. I like to write in my own voice. Good luck with your writing. I think you'll do okay by all accounts.
Maybe it’ll turn into a memoir someday!!
@@searchingforsamantha Possibly. I write mostly for myself now, or to appear somewhat amusing on TH-cam occasionally.
Haha love that
Belated congratulations.
Thank you!!
Congratulations on your achievements as a writer. I wish you every success with your career.
Thanks so much 🙏
@@searchingforsamantha You're welcome.
Maybe for an idea you should try like things you wouldn’t do on the channel like drawing etc!
I have thought about doing some different things, but never about that! Good food for thought.
Hi! I just found your channel I’m happy to be the first to comment!
Welcome!! 🫶
@@searchingforsamantha thanks!
I remember working on your books at OMC very fondly ❤️ Hope you’re well!
Ahhhh lovely to see you here Claire!! Hope you’re well, too 🫶
I love how you justify why they are autumn reads 😂
Let’s be honest, some of them do require creative explanation 😂
@@searchingforsamantha lol. Thanks for some great recs. And I’ve read a few you share. You are in for a treat!
Ooooh that’s exciting to hear!!
A Study in Drowning is on my TBR! It sounds so good. I love your vibe counter! 😂
Hahaha as someone who writes for a living, it’s only mildly embarrassing how appalling my vocabulary is 🙈
@@searchingforsamantha Haha well as someone else who says "vibe" a lot, I love it! 😂
YES I LOVED WE SPREAD !!!! sadly dnf’d a study in drowning :’( hope you have better luck!!! malice house sounds so good!!! I want to pick up haunted ever after!!! I WANT TO READ THE PUMPKIN SPICE CAFE SOOO BAD i went to barnes and noble and they were sold out :( I have you, again on my tbr for this season!!! good luck with your tbr!!!!
Sounds like we’ll be doing a lot of buddy reading!! Let me know how you get on with them.
A Study in Drowning and Pumpkin Spice Cafe are on my TBR too :) I'll have to check these others out.
Oooh you’ll have to let me know what you think! I’ve started A Study in Drowning this morning!
I really enjoyed When Among Crows as well!! I also started You've Got Chain Mail. I think my Kindle is dying though, because it keeps skipping chunks of pages and sometimes when I open it there are weird symbols instead of words. 😳 It's done that on a couple books now. So.....I had to pause You've Got Chain Mail (although I'm really enjoying it so far!!) until I can get that figured out. 😂
Oh no!!! Hope it’s not something wrong with the book 🙈 hope you enjoy the story!!
@@searchingforsamantha I think it's just my Kindle, as it's done it on a couple books now! I just have to get that sorted 😂
Phew 😅
I loved When Among Crows too!
So good, isn’t it!!
wow
Uh… thanks? 😅
Enjoyed the video. As a published author, working on his second project, I could agree more with your comments and in fact a few of your suggestions are things I am going to try.
So glad you found it useful!!
Thoroughly enjoyed your suggestions. As an author myself, I could not agree more. And some of your suggestions seem incredibly interesting. Thanks.
how has this not blown up? the transitions are seriously on point!! 😲
Thank you!!! You don’t wanna see how many takes it took 😅
Those transitions were sick.
Thank you 🙏
YES YES YES , YES TO EVERYTHING! ❤💖😍
They’re all so good, aren’t they!!
@searchingforsamantha medieval and fantasy nerdy romances just hit differently in my little heart! ✨️❤️
Ahhh then you should definitely check out You’ve Got Chain Mail!
@@searchingforsamantha ohh I will, once I have raised enough money and once I am sure it is available in Greece! 🤩
I unintentionally have been doing all of that (aside from connecting with other writers- Introvert here) and honestly, I cannot stress enough how important an outline is. I was a pantser before and as soon as I started to actually plan things (I use the snowflake method, if anyone’s heard of it) the quality of my work skyrocketed so much that I facepalmed myself for why I did not do that earlier. 😂
The snowflake method is great! I find it works really well alongside other outline methods that are more specific about the story beats that need to be hit. And well done for hitting all of these - some are more intuitive than others, so you’re doing great!
Awesome!!!
Congrats on the sponsorship!!!! Love the recomendations!!!
Thank you!!
It's probably the same old thing I read about 30 years ago, and I am still seeing it peddled today. If you think it will help then go for it, but, in my humble opinion, you don't really need writing advice. I am pretty sure Charles Dickens, Emily Bronte and George Orwell didn't take a writing course. Just write.
congrats big sis i only subbed recently i am so happy for you 💝
Thank you!! 🙏
Doing a reading sounds like a nightmare. You did a great job though!
Thank you!! It was so nerve wracking 😭
I was lucky to have a teacher in high school who forced us to learn to outline. I hated it, and never used outlines in college. I wrote huge science papers without outlining, so I figured I could do the same when writing a novel later on. 4 started-but-never-finished novels later, I decided to try outlining my current wip and, lo and behold, I'm now working on my second draft. 🙌🏼
It really is so useful!!
Trope Recommendations: Bad Buddy (Thai TV show) - Enemies to lovers/rivals to lovers, Forbidden love/forbidden romance, Forced proximity, and possibly Childhood sweethearts although only one sided. ---- Two neighbors whose families hate each other meet up again in college when their friend groups get into a fight. Scum Villain Self Saving System (Novel) - Miscommunication trope -----An anti-fan wakes up as the villain in the novel he was reading before he died. Because the original was a Harem novel, he just wants to be his well respected teacher instead of getting killed by the MC like the original story. What's Wrong with Secretary Kim - Workplace romance (Webcomic/Korean TV Show) --- The CEO proposes to his Secretary after she gives her two weeks notice in an attempt to keep her working for him.
Ooh, I haven’t heard of any of these before! Thanks for the recommendations 🙏
This is such helpful and practical advice. Also Reedsy's course sounds fantastic! I can't do this next one but I see there's another starting end of October that I might try to join. Question about social media...do you think that it matters the specific form of social media? I've seen people say Instagram is the only way to go and others say Instagram isn't all that great for authors. One of the reasons I started my BookTube was to start creating an online presence for myself and my writing, but I've been debating Instagram as well.
I think every kind of social CAN sell books, but you have to go ALL IN if you’re going to move the needle, so it’s important to choose one you like. I like TH-cam and TikTok, so that’s what I focus on!
@@searchingforsamantha Thanks! I appreciate your info and perspective!
That's so interesting! And encouraging to see that it's possible to write a whole book per year with a full time job and other hobbies!
It’s not easy, but it’s definitely possible! Glad you found this helpful 😁
Happy belated birthday! I read When Among Crows last month. It took me a bit to get into it as well but then I ended up enjoying it. It stresses me out having so many books out from the library too!! And I say that as I currently have 5 from the library and 5 more ready for me to pick up. 😳 I got You've Got Chain Mail on my Kindle! Can't wait to dive in! (Probably after I finish some of these library books 🤣 )
Ahhhh hope you enjoy the book!! And that you’re able to bust your TBR queue a bit 😅
Thank you for this!!! So helpful
Got an updated version coming soon!!
I did my first attempt of a yearlong book buying ban this year. On January 1, I started the ban. On January 6, I purchased a book lmao
Hahahaha I’ve totally been there! This was definitely not my first attempt.
I love this. Please do more videos like this. ❤
If you know of any other festivals that want me, I’d be happy to 😂
Ahh, congrats on your new release! ❤🥰
Thanks Malayka 🫶 can’t wait for you to get your copy! Hope it arrives soon 🤞
Congrats on the sponsorship! This was so cool to watch!
Thank you!!! 🙏
As we say in Greece, may it has good travels ❤🎉 (καλοτάξιδο!) meaning may it be bought by many people from different places on earth - may it travel to every book loving corner of the earth!
Ahhhh thank you 🙏 🥰
Well done!! Subscribed and on the journey with you 🎉❤
Thank you 🥹
How do you find a writing group? I'm struggling with that
I’ve got a whole video with all my tips! Linked in the description 😁
@@searchingforsamantha Thank you!
Getting on social media from the jump is soooo true! 👏🏾 Nearly all of the indie authors I follow tend to show screenshots of the rank or sales whenever a post or video goes viral online 👌🏽 Not only does it sell books, but just sharing snippets of your world, characters and writing style draws people in. That's one of the reasons I started my socials this year! 🥰 I'm still struggling to build my writing habit, but these tips are great as usual! ❤
It used to be that social media didn’t really sell books, but that’s massively shifted the last few years!! And well done on everything you’re doing ❤️
My favorite book is 'Silent Patient' by alex michaelides !.. Just enjoyed this book a lot 🤌
